best rye-based cocktails in/near Oakland?

thanks for the recommendations, everyone. I'll go with Adesso for the bday tomorrow (a bitters-focused program sounds right up his alley) and keep the rest of these in my pocket for future outings.

Or anywhere in the East Bay, really, if they're excellent.

Among the great cocktail spots in and around Oakland, do any especially stand out for their rye-based cocktails?

Gin's my preference but looking for some birthday drinks for a rye-lover.

thanks for any recommendations!

Grand Lake (Oakland): What to Eat and Where?

Grand Tavern is a charming, friendly neighborhood bar/restaurant with very good food and cocktails.

Arizmendi is a terrific bakery co-op (cousin of Cheeseboard's) that has a nice selection of breads and pastries (their cornmeal-cherry scone is a family favorite). They also make a delicious vegetarian pizza every day.

Grand Bakery produces excellent challah and Jewish/Eastern European pastries.

I second Camino and Boot/Shoe; they're excellent. And Camino's brunch appears to be really under-appreciated. They've got great food and I've never had to wait for a table.

Food pairings for a Cab Franc/Syrah blend?

Mm-- I like the berry sauce idea. thank you.

Food pairings for a Cab Franc/Syrah blend?

I'm looking for some ideas for what would go really well with a nice Cab Franc/Syrah blend ("Evil Eye", Periscope Cellars, 50%/50%). The birthday boy chose the wine and I'm looking to plan a memorable meal around it.

After some browsing around I'm thinking of maybe doing something with morel mushrooms and pork (rack of, or tenderloin).

What would you make to complement a blend like this? Thanks for any ideas.

Looking for excellent "Californian" menu ideas

We have some friends from France coming to visit in a couple weeks. They've wined and (home-cooked) dined us on regional specialties when we've stayed with them, and now we'd like to return the favor.

What kind of dinner menu would you Chowhounds put together to try to showcase delicious, seasonal California foods? We're in Northern Cal so are leaning more in the direction of wine country / Chez Panisse / Zuni style meals. Vegetable-heavy, lots of herbs, fresh, etc. Definitely some Cowgirl Creamery cheeses and regional wines.
But we know that Southern Californian styles--especially w/Latin American flavors--would be newer and probably more interesting (challenging?) to them. (I know they can't handle much heat in their foods..)

Any ideas?? How would you showcase the Golden State's bounty?

Meyer Lemon Digestif

Is it me, or are the resulting digestifs over-the-top sweet? I understand that this is the nature of the beast to some extent, but still...
I'm tinkering with proportions as I go. Does anyone have a different booze/water/sugar ratio that they're happy with?

2008 Beaujolais Release Party

I was just looking for the same info!
The only thing I've come across so far isn't even on Thurs, and it's out in the East Bay: Cafe Fanny's midday Beaujolais fest on Saturday 11/22, which looks like it's co-hosted with Kermit Lynch, the wine importer who shares their parking lot.

What is your favourite champagne cocktail recipe?

I love French 75s, which are easy to make and delicious. Here's an example recipe : http://culinariaeugenius.wordpress.co...

I stole a trick from a restaurant in my area that makes them with meyer lemons. Seriously wonderful.

Best French Toast Recipe?

All of these sounds similar to what I do, but I also like to add a little orange zest to the soaking/dunking mixture when oranges are in season.

Verjus-based cocktail recipes?

I just bought a bottle of Navarro's verjus ("non-fermented grape juice from unripe grapes") when I was up in the Anderson Valley last week. (Info about cooking w/verjus here-- http://www.navarrowine.com/verjus/ver... --and on some Chowhound boards.

When I tasted it I thought it might be a great mixer--nicely acidic with a subtle grape/green apple flavors.

Do any Chowhounds out there have some verjus-based cocktail recipes to share?

happy weekend!

election night in Oakland?

Just saw on the East Bay Obama website that Kimball's Carnival and Cocina Poblano--both in Jack London Square--are hosting returns watching that night.

Very nice rye whiskey?

Thanks to all of you on your feedback. I'm going to include a print-out of this thread with the gift--I'm sure that my boyfriend would love to read it and get ideas for the next bottle.

Based on reviews here and on conversations I've had with some liquor store staff, I decided to go with the Black Maple 23. Hopefully he enjoys it as much as you all have the various bottles you wrote in about.

thanks again!

Very nice rye whiskey?

Thanks for those artisanal tips, JMF. I have a friend visiting from NY in a couple weeks so maybe she could smuggle me some of that Tuthilltown.

Thanks and best of luck with your own rye production! I'll keep an eye out...

Very nice rye whiskey?

Thank you, sku. I'm relying entirely on rye-drinkers like you to figure this out, so I really appreciate it.

Any other Chowhound rye drinkers out there care to weigh in?

Very nice rye whiskey?

Hi there,

I’m looking for some recommendations for a very nice, aged rye whiskey. My boyfriend is turning 30 and getting his Ph.D. all that the same time, so I’d like to get him something special.

At nice bars he’s tried and enjoyed Michter's (not sure if it was the US#1 or the 10-year) and Rittenhouse 21. And recently at Bevmo he was really curious about the Vintage Bourbon Rye 23 y.o.

Also, I just saw that a Chowhound article that recommends the Sazerac 18, Michter’s 10, Black Maple Hill 18, and Rittenhouse 21. (From http://www.chow.com/stories/10679

Do any of you have strong recommendations for or against any of these? I don’t usually drop this kind of money on booze so I’d like to make an informed decision…

Thanks so much!
