downtown Houston tunnel restaurants

There's a Treebeard's in the tunnels. All of the Treebeard's have great informal Cajun food. Also there's a Post Oak Grill in the tunnels.

Old-School Bars & Lounges ?

Marfreless is still there. And "lounge" is a great, underused word that describes it well.

Anything between SA and Uvalde?

There is Don Marcelino's #2 in Uvalde. Great Tex-Mex, with freshly-made-on-the-premises tortillas.

Bryan-College Station?

Burger Boy is a local legend, just north of the A & M campus. Also, farther south on College Ave. is the Chicken Oil Company. Both places make great burgers.

Trip to Houston, need recommendations

You might try Biba's One's-A-Meal, recently relocated to Westheimer. It's open 24 hours. The proprietor will be happy to share his opinions on everything with you.

Downtown Dining in Houston

The Grove (too new to judge) is within walking distance of the Hilton. Grilled meats and very dark lodge ambience overlooking a park.

NEVER BEEN TO TEXAS

Second for The Swinging Door. That was my #2 place in the Houston area before Williams Smokehouse burned down.

Restaurants in downtown Houston?

"Not-too-touristy"? Try Irma's for breakfast or lunch. A very eccentrically decorated Mexican place with a recited menu. Basically, they'll cook you whatever you're hungry for. Everybody says "try the lemonade," which is loaded with fruit chunks, but I think it's overrated and just drink iced tea.

Fantastic hole-in-the-walls in San Antonio and in Austin?

I disagree. I think the food is great, in a restful, peaceful setting. If only the place were farther from the street. . . .

One night in Houston

Goode Company (two locations) for barbecue.

El Tiempo Cantina (two locations) for Mexican food.

Pappadeaux (several locations) for Cajun food.

Cafe Red Onion (three locations) for Central American/Caribbean food

All local chains, all serve very good food..

Looking for good eats in Del Rio, TX

There's always Memo's--Mexican food in a residential neighborhood, south of the railroad tracks.

San Antonio Eats

For breakfast: MI Tierra Cafe and Bakery, on the west side of downtown, near the freeway. Great Mexican food, not crowded and usually quiet for breakfast.

Interesting places to ride to just outside Austin?

I second the recommendation for Louie Mueller's in Taylor. I had lunch there recently and the brisket was excellent--not so tender that you could cut it with a fork, but well-seasoned.

Magic Time Machine - WHY??

I've been to the one in San Antonio. The food isn't *bad* so much as it is an afterthought, sort of tacked on at the end of the whole experience: "Oh, yeah, you came here for dinner, didn't you? Well, here's what we've got for food. . . . " The reason for going is the "ambience," not the food. Eating's just something you do for an hour while soaking up the atmosphere of the place. And yes, it's not a place that appeals to anybody over the age of twelve if you're sober, or anyone over the age of about 25 who's drunk.

Southwest Driving Trip

In Albuquerque both Sadie's Cocinita and El Pinto serve outstanding New Mexican food in very pleasant surroundings on the northwest side of town. Green chile salsa on everything and cubed potatoes rather than rice. For a bread basket, sopapillas with honey to cut the fire of the green chile.

Lubbock recs?

I second the Orlando's recommendation. It's about as good as your going to get in Lubbock for Italian.

(Aus) Great Steak?

Sullivan's. Very crowded and smoky. When I was there last they were packed in cheek by jowl. Huge onion rings, iceberg lettuce salads, great steaks.
