solo traveler gets one dinner in SF -- on the holiday Monday

I'm very flexible and free as of early afternoon, just want to spend a leisurely day strolling (maybe the Mission district, where I've never been, or a drop-in at SFMOMA if it's rainy). The point is to enjoy a leisurely and spontaneous afternoon in the city that doesn't require a lot of hopping on and off public transit, and I can time my dinner for whatever gets me en route to the airport by 8.

I have one afternoon/evening in SF between planes and would like to treat myself to a reasonable, unfussy dinner. Haven't been to SF in years. Specs:

comfortable for a solo diner

open on the president's day holiday, Monday 2/21

not more than $50 (and less is fine)

near a BART stop in SF that is safe for a female traveler alone (will probably start out in the Mission district, need to end up at the airport, and don't want to get lost or waste a lot of travel time)

not exotic or fussy. I love seafood, bistro, American, northern Italian; not a huge fan of Asian (I know, I know), but except for sushi I could be persuaded.

Thoughts?

thai in the village

Is that really the same Toon's that used to be on Bleecker? That's one of the places I was mourning!

I've never tried it -- good idea, thanks.

thai in the village

All my favorite Thai restaurants are disappearing or declining -- I need a new one, moderately priced, between about Wash Square and Union Square river to river. Thoughts?

nice spot for fancy girly cocktails in/near kailua?

I want to send a gift certificate to a friend who lives in Kailua to celebrate an occasion with some kind of foofy drink. Any thoughts for a reasonably local, festive place?

Leopold's kafe for saturday lunch?

Ouch. Maybe not this time! Thanks.

Leopold's kafe for saturday lunch?

What's it like? Crowded, long wait? We want to try it but have to get back to Union Station for a train by 3 or 4 -- can it work?

horehound candy?

Seeking a store where I can buy candy horehound drops.

Nice anniversary dinner on a college budget?

I'm not sure I'd call Symposium "romantic." In fact that's about the last thing I'd call it... Old school, yes; very inexpensive, for sure; "great" food -- well, half the people I know at Columbia love it and half won't go near the place. But "romantic" only if you like scarred booths, tableware as old as the Parthenon, a general diner ambience, and a clientele that veers between mobs of students and nobody at all.

*moderate* priced lunch near met museum?

Thanks, these are helpful -- we're leaning toward Pain Quotidien, sounds about right.

No alcohol, and maybe $15-20 a person.

*moderate* priced lunch near met museum?

For a weekday -- don't care much about cuisine, we just don't want to pay UES prices.

nice sit-down ice cream parlor in somerset/hunterdon county?

We want to give Dad his favorite thing for Father's Day, in a nice setting where 9 of us can sit -- ideas?

babka

Haven't been in years, but the chocolate and cinnamon babkas at Moishe's kosher bakery on Second Avenue at around 7th Street used to be pretty wonderful. Besides which you'd get to watch the two crabbiest old counterpeople in the world yelling at each other...

Fantasy Pastry tour of NYC

They moved years ago to West 14th street, I think between 9th and 10th, but haven't walked by there lately.

romantic dinner with a picky eater?

I was actually wondering about Peasant -- sounds about right.

romantic dinner with a picky eater?

He eats turkey, chicken, beef, pasta; conventional American/European cuisines, nothing frilly or fussy. Prefer a location below 34th Street and a price below stratospheric, say about $150 total for two.

Casual, moderately priced dinner for 3 tomorrow, vaguely midtown west and quiet enough for a conversation catching up on the last ten years...?

OK, I got a rez tonight for Le Madeleine -- so it's still there for the moment!

Two out-of-town guests who like anything but Indian; the main desires are a *quiet* place that won't charge more than about $150 for 3 (they're very modest drinkers).

Wallse -- what to order?

The cream of chestnut soup. It haunts my dreams.

Restaurant around 54 and 10th area

Haven't been there in years but I used to love Bello, northern Italian, at 56th and 9th.

Ruby Foo's website says it's closed because of a kitchen fire!!

We've done Virgils -- but Delta sounds fun.

I thought of HK but heard the lines are long for Sunday brunch, which worries me with tickets on 43rd st -- do you see a problem?

These all sound good -- maybe I'll ask him to pick. Not sure myself what exactly I meant by fun, but I want him to enjoy a characterisitic and somewhat grown-up NY experience -- and yes, he loves chocolate.

He's a generally open-minded eater, likes Asian, bbq, seafood, etc. I want a nice pre-theater lunch spot for Sunday that won't be frantic or touristy, priced below exorbitant but above modest. He's from NJ and appreciates NY.
