short ribs?

I have a soft spot for the short ribs at Blair's in Silver Lake. I've had them a hundred times and they are always fantastic. Bashan in Montrose serves some inspired ones as well.

Wines Til Sold Out website - anyone use it?

That means the Lascombes sold out. K & L had '05 Lascombes for $40 a couple of months ago and I loaded up.

Upcoming Mailing List Releases - 2010

Just got my email from Turley. My allocation is down... Perhaps because I didn't purchase my full allocation in the fall, but I always prefer the Spring selections.

I can't believe that anyone would go to this restaurant expecting to have an authentic experience. Come on people! Stop taking this stuff so seriously! This place doesn't give any illusions of what it is. From the name alone you should expect it to be Westernized, and if you hate everything that isn't authentic, then don't go. I've not been to this place and have no idea if it is good or not, but it is not a valid criticism to say that it is not authentic.

Lemberger

Kiona makes a really great Washington State Lemberger. Inexpensive to boot.

Cheap Wine Bar?

the closest thing i can think of is barbrix on hyperion. not quite $5/glass, but they have a few $6-$7/glass wines and i've usually been pretty impressed with their selection. they also have a pretty reasonably priced small plates menu.

is "silver take" on rowena ever going to open?

this place was supposed to open a few months ago and even had a sign up for a bit, although it has since been taken down. the outside tables and chairs are still there. their website is still up at silvertake.com. seemed like an interesting addition to the neighborhood, and would finally bring something to that weird shaped building which i have been somewhat fascinated with over the years. anyone have any info?

Blair's or Palate for Tomorrow Night?

The food is better at Palate, but you will have a better date at Blair's. Much more intimate and the food is still enjoyable.

Searching for preserved lemon

Anyone know where I can buy some pre-made preserved lemon for when I get a last minute urge to cook Moroccan? Preferably within a short drive of Silverlake or Brentwood.

Tavern in Brentwood

Oh, was hoping it had been open for lunch today. Also, it's not so easy to search the threads when they name it something a common as "tavern". Geez...my bad.

Has anyone been yet? I heard that it was opening today. I work right across the street and am looking forward to this being my new lunch spot.

California Roussannes

Lately I've become a big fan of California Roussanne, such as those produced by Copain, Alban, Zaca Mesa and Qupe. It's becoming an expensive habit however, as these all come in around $30-50/bottle. Anyone aware of any less expensive California producers with a decent product?

Looking for Chinese restaurant with kitschy decor on the Westside

Do you know the names of any of the places in Torrance? I'd be willing to open this up to the greater L.A. area to find a great example of this.

Looking for Chinese restaurant with kitschy decor on the Westside

I went ahead tried Twin Dragon. Looks like the interior was probably great at some point, but now it is just plain white walls and booths, with a few wall hangings. The aquarium behind the bar is a nice touch though. I appreciated the tiki drink menu (decent mai tai) and my crispy duck was not bad. I'm still looking for more as far as ambiance is concerned, however. I did pass by Fu's Palace and am intrigued by the A-frame entrance. Will defintiely check it out soon. Chinois, while definitely cheesy in its own way (and also delicious) is not exactly what I have in mind here. I am talking Americanized Chinese cuisine in a dark environment preferably rife with chinese lanterns and other assorted flotsam and jetsam.

Looking for Chinese restaurant with kitschy decor on the Westside

Is anyone aware of any Chinese restaurants in the Santa Monica/West L.A. area with great old-school 50-60's style over the top decor? Maybe something along the lines of the Good Luck bar in Silverlake, but with food?

Casa, Provecho, or Rivera?

Me and the wife are heading downtown this weekend and wanted to check out one of the new upscale mexican inspired spots before catching a show at the Disney. Which one should we hit?

Suppliers of fresh (not frozen) game meat in Los Angeles?

Is anyone aware of any local (preferably but not necessarily near Silverlake) butchers that offer fresh game meats such as venison, elk, etc.? I am aware of several sources of frozen game meats such as Harmony Farms, but have yet to find someone who can source these fresh.

The great liquor stores? And agricole rum?

silverlake wine has a small but interesting selection, and they usually carry st. james rum agricole (which is the one that most cocktail recipes have in mind). prices are pretty good as well.

Lucifer's unholy pizza

Last night for Gator's championship game munchies I decided try out the new Los Feliz pizzeria, Lucifer's. The concept seems to be based on spicy pizza, so I opted for a Siciliano (sausage and tomatoes) with a heat level of three on their four level scale. I figured this would allow me to feel their signature heat, but not get blown out. I also ordered a "six pack" of wings, which on their menu are declared to be "best in town".

Let's get things started with the pizza. It's hard to describe the taste accurately since of the three people who tried it, none of us could finish a slice because it was so f***ing hot. Not hot in a good way, just hot. We are talking chile flakes everywhere. It doesn't appear that the sauce was kicked up, or there was extra spice in the sausages, just chile flakes all over the damned thing. We were all left wondering what the highest heat level must be like. The godforsaken thing must be covered almost entirely by chile flakes.

The highlight, however, was the moment when we opened the box with the chicken wings. These were the smallest, most pathetic chicken wings I have ever seen, and the room erupted with laughter at the sight of them. One of them wasn't even a wing or leg, but what appeared to be a weird bone fragment with a bit of gristle around it. They were cold and flavorless, and appeared to be something right out of a Tyson box. I'm guessing that Lucifer's mom was the one who declared them "best in town".

I know Lucifer's is a new place, and they are probably "working out the kinks", plus they've gotta maintain the evil theme and everything (which can't be easy), but seriously, take it easy on the chile flakes, guys.

Barbecue near Silverlake?

I'm having some friends over to watch my Gators stomp Tennessee on Saturday and want to pick up some good barbecue for the occasion. I am well aware that there is not really any good barbecue in Silverlake itself, but does anyone know of any great places in the vicinity?

didar palace - worst food in town? the world?

a group of coworkers just took me to a persian restaurant called didar palace on bundy south of wilshire. besides being the most bizarrely decorated restaurant i have ever seen (imagine a psychedelic alice in wonderland setting on a really tight budget), the food literally scared us. the "cokes" we ordered were poured from 3 liter bottles of off-brand product, the gyros contained barely heated, freezerburned, rock hard pieces of what was supposedly meat. don't even ask me about the secret sauce. needless to say, no one cleaned their plates. as we left we noticed that there was no health department grade posted, and word is that there was no soap or paper towels in the restroom. i challenge anyone to eat there and tell me this isn't the worst eating experience they have ever had. it certainly was for me. i'm gonna go puke now.

Casual Seafood in L.A.

For inland dwellers, I recommend Clancy's Crab Broiler in Glendale. Not necessarily for gourmands, but its got a great 70's-80's retro nautical feel, reasonable prices, large selection (all fresh from my favorite personal supplier, Fish King), and its the place I turn to when looking for some casual seafood.

Foxtail

I went last Friday. Beautiful restaurant, though the chairs were a bit low for me. Service was great. Enjoyed the signature cocktails and the wine list was above average, with picks primarily from California. I had the lamb which was cooked properly, but under-seasoned. Our table's favorites were the steak frites, which were melt-in-your-mouth truffley goodness, and the mussels which were some of the best I've had in town. The dancey dj mix may be offputting for some, but we had a great time.
