I hosted a party in Il Moro's private room and it was amazing. Well worth the money. The food was great and the service was perfect.
Manhattan beach area
In Manhattan Beach, I enjoy Petros (upscale Greek) and Cafe Pierre (french). Talia's is also good. My family eats at El Gringo (casual Mexican) at least once a week. Uncle Bills or Koffee Kart are both good for breakfast.

I almost always use the second recipe you listed but use a can of Coke instead of red wine (sweet and savory). My family loves it!

That's the recipe I use - plus I add a can of coke. I think you can find kosher for passover "coke."

Simple Jewish food
My favorite and easiest brisket recipe: 1 brisket trimmed of all fat, one can of coke, one packet of onion soup mix, and 1 botte of Heinz chili sauce. Mix together and bake at 350 until tender (usually around 3 hours). I find it easier to bake the day before and slice when cool. Reheat the day you're serving with the sauce. Delicious!
I also recommend the California Kosher cookbook (I know you said he's not kosher, but the book is good.) I think it's out of print, but you can easily find a used copy on the internet.

Il Fornaio in Manhattan Beach/El Segundo has really nice private rooms. The food is definitely decent.

HELP-Avenue closed Sunday! Need fine dining in Manhattan Beach.....
Cafe Pierre has good food, but it is not terribly romantic - the room is small and the tables are close together. Petros, I've heard, has good food, but I've also heard the room can get a bit noisy.
Another option is Mangiamo. They have a back room that is romantic and the food is pretty good. Their sister restaurant Thalia's also has good food.

I totally agree. I went a couple of months ago based on reviews. I ordered the lunch special and was extremely disappointed. The fish was tough and inedible. My friends at the table also found the sushi below par. I will never return.
