Statesville NC recommendations?

Abbreviated NC BBQ Tour

Smiley's, Bar-B-Que Center, Smokey Joe's and Cooks are all worth a visit in addition to Lexington Barbecue. Asks for some outside meat mixed in. Speedy's isn't a wood cooker and is not worth the calories if you're seeking out real barbecue. For the down-east stuff, I'll defer to Naco, although I've had some fine barbecue at Bum's.

North Carolina BBQ TOUR

They start the shoulders in the oven and then finish them off on the pit. Not what they used to be, but still pretty tasty.

North Carolina BBQ TOUR

All are worthy destinations with the exception of RO's and maybe The Pit. I'm not really impressed with it - there are better Eastern-style spots. Consider Bum's in Ayden. Go for the coarse chopped with outside brown in the Lexington-style places. It probably won't be available in whole hog joints. Have fun then consult your cardiologist.

Columbia SC BBQ

John D. Hite and Sons on Dreher Rd. In West Columbia serves top notch barbecue and hash. Take out only.

Seafood and BBQ near Oak Island, NC?

Clem's is a great spot to pick up some blue crabs. Soft shells will be coming in soon.

SC Barbecue near Charlotte

Burk's Barbecue on Cherry Rd.in Rock Hill offers mustard-based SC sauce or a red sauce.

Best BBQ in Charlotte

When did they go to gas? That's sad. Haven't been in 3-4 years... Oh well, another is now dancin' with the devil!

Hopefully M&K in Granite Quarry is still cooking with wood!

Best BBQ in Charlotte

Don't leave out College Drive-In Barbecue! Really good barbecue, but the hushpuppies need work...

SC bbq: McCabe's or D&H?

I'd stick with McCabe's where you'll have the option of ordering barbecue "off the pit". I strongly recommend it. The sides are good, as are D&H's. The barbecue at D&H is fine, but not quite up to McCabe's. Both serve real wood-cooked barbecue.

Who has best hotdog in NC?

Red dogs are commonly used in Lexington style barbecue joint hot dogs. I think the Curtis or Valleydale brands are predominant. Somehow I just feel that dressing a Usinger or Best dog with mustard, chili, raw onions and red barbecue slaw may not be the best way to enjoy those sausages. Red dogs are simply another flavor component in a Lexington barbecue joint dog. Stamey's in Greensboro serves a fine example.

Best place for a pigburger in Knoxville?

Scruggs Real Pit Barbecue on E. Magnolia had a pretty good pigburger. Haven't been in six or seven years, though...

I 95..NY-Hilton Head

Naco, is K&L a wood or charcoal burner?

Cook-out in Asheville

Strictly fast food. Better than the big ff chains. but nothing really special. LOTS of shake choices. My kids can attest to their value better than I...

Columbia, SC BBQ

J.D. Hite in West Columbia is terrific. Take out only, however. Get some hash to go along with the barbecue. Open Thurs.- Sat.

Barbecue Road Trip

Also College Drive-In in Salisbury. Poor 'pups. Excellent barbecue.

Carolina BBQ on I-77 in SC

John D. Hite and Son on Dreher Rd. in West Columbia is a good choice. Take out only. Be sure to order hash as well as barbecue.

I second bbqdawg's rec for Sweatman's.

Good NC BBQ in Charlotte, NC

"No wood cooking = no smoke flavor. Its not bbq, its just roast pork."
Amen, brother... Barbecue is cooked over wood coals-for better or worse. That being said, well roasted pork can be fantastic. Good, real barbecue disappeared from Charlotte when Old Original Barbecue on Camp Green St. closed or when Hog Heaven quit cooking with wood.

Barbecue in Lexington, NC

Barbecue Center, Smiley's, Cook's, Smokey Joe's or one of my favorites, Tar Heel Q.

Scott's BBQ - Hemingway, SC - Need days/hours of operation

RFS = Thursday, Friday, Saturday.

Help please with BBQ & High-end; W of 77 and E of Knoxville

If in Shelby, I'd suggest Bridges Barbecue Lodge. Unlike Alston Bridges, (not related) Barbecue Lodge is all wood cooked yielding real NC barbecue. Alston Bridges cooks with electricity and "finishes" the pork over wood. Both serve really good-to-great hushpupies with Alston Bridges getting the nod with regard to the 'pups. Oh yeah, Bridges Barbecue Lodge is open on Sunday, closed on Monday.

Prosser's BBQ--Murrells Inlet, SC

Don't know about Prosser's specifically, but lots of SC barbecue joints are open Thursday-Saturday or Friday-Saturday only.

Memphis barbecue

Don't leave Memphis without having a barbecue sandwich from Payne's.

Day trip to Commerce, GA

If you'd like barbecue, give Hart's a shot.

Best Eastern NC BBQ

To my tastebuds, charcoal beats gas and wood beats charcoal. This is, of course, is a generalization. I've had some wood cooked barbecue that was really awful and some gas cooked stuff that was good roast pork. Good charcoal cooked barbecue can indeed be had at B's and at Charlie's Barbecue in Pelham, SC.

The BBQ Joint / North Charleston, SC

There's no excuse for anyone puttin' sugar in cornbread !!

The BBQ Joint / North Charleston, SC

No pit? No wood?
No real barbecue...

Ribs in Greensboro?

Good luck!

Manning, SC: BBQ question

Yes! Get the "off-the-pit" option! Wonderful stuff.

Lexington NC BBQ

Lexington #1 and The Barbecue Center are both excellent. Tar Heel Q is a fantastic spot located west of Lexington on US Hwy 64 that receives much less attention than some of the in-town joints. All are certainly worth a visit.

I'd avoid Speedy's, Lexington Style Trimmings and Henry James. They're not wood cooked, real barbecue.
