Dessert for special date: cheesecake or chocolate mousse?
I vote for chocolate mousse. I'd say more people would like chocolate mousse over cheesecake. When I worked in restaurants, chocolate cake or pie was more popular than cheesecake.
I've always found that guys like homemade chocolate chip cookies too. You could do a chocolate fondue with cheesecake bites for dipping, along with other things to dip such as marshmallows, cookies, vanilla wafers, fruit, etc. We did this for NYE and it was delish!
Uses for buttermilk? Reposted
Blue cheese salad dressing. Here is the recipe I made tonight with my leftover buttermilk. I liked the results very much; I will definitely make again. I substituted Gorgonzola in place of blue cheese.

cooking/grocery shopping/MEAL PLANNING is a lifeskill I just do not seem to have. Advice on frugal(ish) HEALTHY options?
Great topic! Here is another post that I responded to with simple meal ideas: http://chowhound.chow.com/topics/577921.
My suggestion is to learn to make 10 low cost, low calorie meals that you enjoy. That's it, you are done. No more stressing. Just rotate the dishes every week. You will be able to make them in your sleep and shop for ingredients with ease.
When I consider making a new recipe and I do not have the spices to make a dish, I don't make it and find another recipe. I hate spending on average $4.00 for a spice I may use only once or twice. Of course, there are some spices that I use every day and you will figure out what is good for you. (ie. cinnamon, cumin, etc.)

Why add flour to cookies?
Thank you! Good point re "taste of home." I will make the PB cookies with flour.
Why add flour to cookies?
I want to make peanut butter cookies and I trying to decide which recipe to follow. One recipe has flour and one does not. Are there any benefits for using the recipe with flour? Will they last longer? I plan to send the cookies overseas to soldiers in Iraq.
Thank you in advance for your comments.
King Taco: what's in that sauce?!!?! [moved from Los Angeles board]
According to KT's website, the nutritional info is as follows:
serving size 7 (grams ?, hard to read on the website's chart)
calories 5
fat 0
sodium 70
total carbs 1
http://www.kingtaco.com/menu/burritos.html
I doubt there is any oil, lard, etc, in the recipe since the calories from fat is zero.
The sodium content is very low. According to Answerfitness website: Two tablespoons of ready-to-serve, store-bought salsa contains 9 calories, 0 fat, 0 cholesterol, 198 milligrams of sodium, 2.1 grams of carbs, 0.5 grams of protein and 98 mg of potassium. Fresh salsa or pico de gallo will generally have less sodium.
Any suggestions for mellow NYE dinner/hangout in LA, OC or anywhere in between?
What do you consider affordable? Under $100, $50??

Here is a link to cherry chip muffins (omit the nuts from the recipe) and decorate with sprinkles. There is also a cookbook at this website your friend may be interested in getting, it is called " Cooking for Food Allergies Everyday Gourmet".

Here is another highly rated recipe for a chocolate cake: http://www.recipezaar.com/Egg-free-Milk-free-Chocolate-Cake-12564. I could not find a good frosting but you could just sprinkle powered sugar on the cake and decorate with rainbow sprinkles.

So what's in your tuna sandwich?
I used Starkist chunk light tuna in water. I have had better results with solid white albacore tuna. I always buy tuna in water to save calories but restaurant tuna sandwiches are so much better. They must use tuna in oil?
Thanks for asking.
Irvine...help!
Great timing, Orange County is having Restaurant Week extended through 9/26. Fantastic prices for lunch and dinners at upscale eateries, including many restaurants in Irvine.
Here is the link. http://www.orangecountyrestaurantweek.com/
I can highly recommend Bistango, Daily Grill, Sage in Newport Beach, Mozambique - Laguna Beach. The other Irvine restaurants I have never been to so I cannot comment on them.
Enjoy!
So what's in your tuna sandwich?
Today my tuna sandwich contains tuna mixed with mayo and relish. I added lettuce, tomato, goat cheese, fresh basil, thin red onion slices and sliced avocado. I think I used the wrong kind of tuna though, I've had better sandwiches.
Christmas Brunch in Valley-ish area? HELP!
I'm looking for the same thing. So far I've found the following restaurants offering brunch:
Marriott Hotel in Woodland Hills, brunch at lunch time only, appx $35 for adults.
94th Aero Squadron
818-994-7437
16320 Raymer Ave.
Van Nuys
They are open on Xmas until 7pm. They are having a buffet for $24.95 for adults. The last time we were there on a holiday there were no planes landing or taking off so do not expect much action.
The Odyessy Restaurant I pretty sure has a buffet with a great view.
I will update you if I find more places. So far, none of these interest us so our back up plan is El Toritos' (no buffet).
