Silver Lake Guy's Profile
il Capriccio Wood Fire Pizzeria
Fair and balanced review with a good point about delivery. The SO and I dropped by the other night before a show at the Vista (btw Spidey does not rock) and grabbed a couple of slices. They definitely care about the product. The dough was tasty, had the right amount of give and pull and the crust was a good balance of sweet and salt. I'm not a huge tomato sauce fan but theirs was on the light side so all in all a good start. Once I save up 16.95 I'll try a whole one.
Upscale Burbank
I'd choose Picanha more for the experience, though the food is quite good and since it's a Brazilian churascarria, your guest would have the advantage of accepting just those meats he likes. Warning: strictly for carnivores.
Roy's Downtown L.A-Menu Suggestions
Yes they mash up the strawberries and somehow fold that icy concoction into a creamier pina colada type base, so it's a great big red and white swirly gig of a drink. My SO loves it so much I tried to replicate it at home (got about 80% close he says). BTW I went for the Mai Tai at Roy's and it wasn't as good as the ones I've had in Hawaii or Trader Vic's.
Roy's Downtown L.A-Menu Suggestions
Had the prix fix twice, each time enjoying the macademia nut encrusted whitefish, which the server informs you varies depending on availability, sometimes butterfish (my first time) and sometimes mahi mahi (my second). Both were great, as was the appetizer plate and delicious molten souffle - the latter easily shareable. BTW the appetizer plate of prawn, rib and potsticker can also be added to any entree for $6. Finally, if you and your coworker are in a celebratory mood, try the Lava Flow - it's their signature drink not on the menu, a mix of strawberry dacquiri and pina colada that my SO flips for. Roy's is a great, affordable find for seafood downtown.
Santa Barbara Spot Prawns In L.A.
The Crab Cooker in Newport Beach has 'em - they were on the menu last night for $19.95 but no one at our table got them.
Speranza on Hyperion?
I would not recommend parking at Gelson's without going to Gelson's. They patrol.
Dining under the stars
Valentino's patio, Santa Monica. Terrific homemade pasta, extensive wine list, great ambience.
"Julio's" Chili Verde Burritos
Just wanted to say this is why I love this board. Had a craving today for a lunch of "comfort food", searched for lincoln heights, found this post and tried Martha's. True hole-in-the-wall 5 mins away from my work: lively, interesting characters, great smells, ranchera music jukebox and the best darn chili verde burrito I may have ever had. Long live the chows!
Echo Park/Silver Lake pizza spots
Just walked by Hard Times yesterday. Got a "C". FYI.
Any suggestions on the best Spaghetti in LA?
Yikes. I didn't know they had a restaurant either. It's hands-down my favorite sauce, expensive but worth every penny. But Gelson's just stopped carrying it. And from the link, there's nowhere else I routinely go that has it. Guess I'll have to make a special trip to Bristol Farms and buy a case.
Any suggestions on the best Spaghetti in LA?
I just had the spaghetti and meatballs at Frankie's last Fri night and while the two meatballs were tasty and light, the portion was half of what I would normally eat. So if he's a hungry guy skip it. I prefer the s-&-m (!) at Il Capriccio on Vermont in Los Feliz.
Lucky Devils breakfast report
cool - what kinda price range are we talking about? do you know if they have french toast? thx.
Speranza on Hyperion?
We're thinking about trying this tonight, it's within walking distance - any other feedback on this place before we do? Do we need reservations. I remember Caffe Capri was small...Thanks.
Ketchup: a (long) review
thanks for the review - I've been curious...

Catering Services for Nonprofit in Lincoln Heights

Catering Services for Nonprofit in Lincoln Heights
We've been having trouble finding reliable, affordable restaurants/caterers that offer some variety for groups that range from 12-24 on given weekdays and will deliver to County-USC area. My folks are usually open to traying all kinds of food from Thai to Italian to standard sandwiches/salads. Would love to build a file on places if y'all have some suggestions.
TIA
Where is the absolute best carne asada burrito?
owned by the same folks as El Taurino, no?
Help me Choose B'day Dinner w/Hubby
You know what might fit the bill: Mimosa on Beverly just west of Fairfax. Country French bistro, not pretentious, affordable and good food. I like the pate, the crusty bread, the atmosphere. The host is also quite warming; he used to give you a nice glass of champagne if you had to wait for your table, which always helps get the party started.
Where is the absolute best carne asada burrito?
The SO and I stopped at El Taurino on Hoover after some late night event. This place feeds a large and diverse crowd especially late on a weekend. Ordered a carne asada burrito and a beer period. Got it, couldn't wait to dig in and BAM! the hot sauce hit me between the eyes it was so darn hot. Tried again after a slug of beer and WHAM! right at me again. I'm no slouch with heat but WOW I could not do this. Broke me heart but I couldn't take another bite.
Big Mama's and Papa's (Khachapouri)
OMG it's my new favorite comfort food, often consumed (incongruously) after the gym. Try the ham and mushrooms if you're into it or the bacon and onions. The SO thinks I'm nuts but double yum. And it travels well.
BirthdayBoy wants best L.A. Churrascarria
Not sure where you're at or how large your party is, but By Brazil on Cabrillo in Torrance is run by a brother-sister team from Brazil. It doesn't get huge crowds so perfect for a large party - they've accommodated me more than once. Closer to home, I prefer Picanha over Gaucho's, especially for the selection on weekends.
New York Food Company (La Venta and Verandas, South Bay)
When I worked in the South Bay I used NYFC extensively for small and large meetings and almost uniformly received raves from participants, not only for their varied offerings, but their expedient and professional service. I don't hand out compliments readily, but their salads, wraps, hot and cold sandwiches, and even light suppers were always pretty tasty and their presentations were just a bit beyond others groups I used. All that plus they are affordable. However, I only used them for work gatherings, no personal/party experience.
Best Nachos?
King Torta on Valley & Boca, not far from Soto. Not sure if it's considered El Sereno, but it's just so of SoPas. Amazing tortas (homemade bread) but surprisingly good nachos.
Food/places you go when you're exhausted!
As in the other night when the SO was outta town and I worked a 12-hr day, I dropped by Wong's Wok in the Ralph's/Sav-On (or Rite-Aid now) mini-mall where Fletcher and Glendale collide, and pick up chow mein noodles with chicken teriyaki and chinese veggies for $5.95. It's a feel-good fix for me though not exactly heart-friendly. Did I mention I'm into salt?
Dinah's Fried Chicken in Glendale?
Their exclusive method is "so free from cooking oil" which doesn't mean they don't use oil I think, just that it's more free from it? It's good and greasy to me and I admit to having a weakness for their chicken, potato salad (really creamy and tasty for some mysterious reason probably having to do with sodium) and their newly available mac-and-cheese. Others swear by their cole slaw with pineapple. Their rolls have recently changed to icky store-bought kind, but you can still get their homemade apple butter. Just don't go toward the end of the night - we've had a few bad batches probably due to a busy day of cooking and infrequent changing of that nonexistent oil.
Table 8 Menu?
Not sure who or what is labeling Table8 as a steakhouse. Surely not the restaurant itself. I think of it as kinda California Cuisine, whatever that means. Seasonal offerings, meat and seafood, they really have a variety. And BTW we've enjoyed the porterhouse served tableside without ordering in advance, twice now. It's pretty good. But if your guests are looking for 48oz portions, you should consider a true steakhouse, from which there are now many to choose.
Hollywood Food plus Scene
I second the Dakota. Actually a cool old-Hollywood style room, nice luxurious booths, good bar, and the food was surprisingly good. Not much of a scene I guess, but right there in Hollywood. Head over the Chateau Marmont if you want scene - good for drinks only.
