Christmas in the Bay area for visitors
Oh my gosh! You are all amazing!
Thank you all so much for telling me all this so very valuable information and tips.
I am super excited. I booked a room at the Sir Frances Drake hotel(got a grate deal).
And I am still trying to figure out where to eat for Christmas Day dinner. I am sure there will be plenty of eating options, I just want to make sure I have a set reservation for Christmas Day.
Do any of you have an opinion on Cafe De la Presse? It seems to have comfortable atmosphere and the menu looks good. Not impressed on the dessert menu though.
Christmas in the Bay area for visitors
Hi!
I am thinking of planning a nice getaway for my husband and I over Christmas to San Francisco. It will be our first time to visit SF.
What is the best area to stay in that is happening and fun? In terms of things to see and do as well as dinning hot spots? Price-range I am looking for is $12-$30 on Entrees. $10 cocktails but unique and fulfilling-You know what I mean.
I was looking at a restaurant called Range located in the Mission District, is this the area I should stay in?
Thanks for any advice out there. :)
Sur La Table Classes-is it worth it?
I wan to take a cooking class at Sur La Table with a friend as a gift for her birthday.
She loves chocolate and doing fun activities like this. Sur La Table offers a "hands-on" chocolate workshop for $69.00. each
The menu is:
"Chocolate Biscotti, Chocolate Caramels, Chocolate Espresso Pots de Crème, Silky Chocolate Pudding, Individual Chocolate Souffles, Bittersweet Chocolate"
These items don't really impress me. I mean, chocolate pudding? I could navigate my way through all these in my own kitchen. Do you think they're going to up-sell their products while we are in the class?
So, what should I do? Is it worth it?
What makes Irish Stew genuinely Irish?
Humm. Very interesting.
most recipe do include somekind of roux though.
Custom Diabetic Recipe
These are such awesome tips. Thanks. I will try all these things and see what works best.
What makes Irish Stew genuinely Irish?
I am just wondrfing what makes an Irish stew and Irish stew.
Do you have an opinion on this? Please share.
Here's what I am thinking
Is it Lamb or Beef?
Is it chunks of potatoes with veggies or mashed poatatoes in the middle of a meat and veggie gravy stew?
Chunky or Mushy?
Is it all a matter of preference?
I am thinking they key ingredients are
Guinness
meat
potato
carrots
onion
roux
thyme
celery
Thanks a bunch for anything you can add! :)
Custom Diabetic Recipe
If you have a regular old recipe for say....cookies. Is there a way to alter the recipe to accomodate for diabetics?
Or do you have to stick witth the already-made diabetic recipes?
For example I have a meringue cookie recipe that is really good and I want to make a special batch for my diabetic friend. Is this possible?
I have found meringue cookies on dlife.com but I don't want to make them, I want to make my cookies. :)
Is there a way?
Cheese Party
Hahahaa. That would be funny! I don't think so. I only know the hosts plus 4 other guests that they are inviting.
Cheese Party
My hubby and I were invited to a cheese and wine party this Saturday and we are supposed to bring a cheese. What's the best cheese ever? I have tried the dubliner and an apricot stilson which I love but I want to see what else is out there.
What's your favorite? What's the price on it? and where can I get it?
Thanks!
Your favorite recipes using Trader Joe's products
Oh Trader Joes.
My favorite would be Tj's Lobster Ravioli with the the Tj's alfredo sauce.
For the sauce you sautee small garlic slivers in butter, olive oil, add a pinch of white pepper, crushed red pepper and, italian herb mix. When butter starts to brown and garlic is soft but barely browning, mix in 1/4 cup or more of alfredo and mix with butter until hot. It's a light creamy sauce and goes wonderful with the lobster ravioli. Yum!
Go here to see my post about it. http://littleivycakes.blogspot.com/search/label/Lobster%20Ravioli
Two pints of currants: one red, one champagne, what should i do?
Oh my gosh do you know how lucky you are! I have been trying to find red currants since May. I found out that their season begins in July though.
I was going to make a danish pastry bread and fill the danish bread with red currants, brie and bacon. I have seen recipes for currant pie, I bet little currant tarts would be really good. How about red currant sorbet? Or I know I have seen savory dishes that use currants.
Oh I am so jealous. I need to go get some Currants.
vegetable sides?
Good question!
Steamed chopped swiss chard with a sauce I make of
butter
lemon juice
Olive oil
and Spike (it's a seasoning I get at Ralphs)
I also really love carrots with 1 tbs. maple syrup, butter and fresh ground pepper.
or what about asparagus wrapped in bacon with cumin. Yum!
LaLa's Argentine Grill
Me and my husband go to the Lala's on Melrose all the time and love it!
We alwasy take people that are visiting us from out of town to Lala's. We like sitting outside especially in the summer-it's a really lovely atmosphere.
Red Currants
Has anyone seen any around?
I have checked Ralphs, Whole Foods, Trader Joes, and Farmer's Market on Larchmont.
Thanks! :)
Red Currants
I know red currants are in season right now (June/July) and I really would like to use them in my cooking and baking.
Have you seen them around? Or do you know where I could find some?
Thanks so much!
Extra Tortillas: What do you do?
If I were you I would just make some yummy chips with the extras, chop up some fresh salsa and have a margarita on the rocks. Yum yum.
MERINGUE EMERGENCY
Thanks everyone for all your help!!! It did help. I made the meringue because I really wanted to do the toasty thing with my culinary torch.
I heated 5 egg whites, and 1 1/2 cup sugar over a double boiler until 110 degrees then took off heat and beat with vanilla for 20 minutes until stiff and glossy. I frosted the cupcakes, toasted them and left them in their boxes. In the morning I woke up early and rushed to see if they were ok..... and they were. YAY!!!
MERINGUE EMERGENCY
Okay, so if I go with the Italian meringue frosting I DO NOT refrigerate it right?
Making breadcrumbs
What about putting divided chinks in a big baggie and pounding on it with a meat tenderizer?
MERINGUE EMERGENCY
Thank you jsaimd! I have been searching everywhere and couldn't find a recipe for southern custard. It it really the original frost for red velvet? It seems everyone does creamm cheese.
The italian meringue doesn't seem like it will turn out soft and marshmallowie.
MERINGUE EMERGENCY
Is the 7 min frostinf like this?
Over double boiler- heat sugar and egg whites until 110 degrees
then beat for 20 minutes until glossy and stiff.
I made this and it did not survive overnight out of the fridge.
I have to make these tonight so I will either make a choclate cream cheese frosting, try to find that southern custard buttercreamrecipe that someone mentioned above or try the "more stable" italian meringue. Thansk so much!
MERINGUE EMERGENCY
Ok, good tips. Thanks. I could do that, bake the meringue ontop on the cupcake. But there is are version where you just beat the meringue into a frosting and use it-that's the one I am talking about.
MERINGUE EMERGENCY
Well, I have to be to work at 8:30 and the last time I made the frosting(which was eaten right away) It took me about 45 minutes for the entire process. Plus I have to decorate all of them too.
So I am not sure I could get up that early. I may have to. It just depends on how bad I want to do this frosting.
MERINGUE EMERGENCY
Ok so I am making red velvet cupcakes for a birthday at work and I want to make a meringue frosting.
BUT....... I have to make everything the night before. I have only made meringue frosting once before and I am afraid if they sit over night, the frosting will fall and be yukky.
Can anyone help me? What are the rules of meringue frosting. How long does it last and what recipe would be most durable so they stay exactly how intended.
Thanks!
THIRD STREET
Who went to the block party on Third Street last night? It was a promotional thing for Third Street shopping.
Most of all the stores and restaurants between Fairfax and La Cienega had free samples of food, drink and store sales. COOL! 10% off a $500.00 pair of shoes. GOOD DEAL!
No but, It was actually pretty fun. I wasn't sure what it was going to be like but, because me and my hubby live in the area and had not much else to do, we went to check it out. We ran in to two friends there and so we toured the shops together. There was wine at Joan's on Third and food samples, margarita's, vodka sangria from L.A. Foodcourt, energy drinks. There was even a free photo booth where you could take photos. Anyway, it was surprisingly fun and just wondered if anyone else went and has something to say about it. :)
