Nice Wine Bar or Pub for Groups Brownstone Brooklyn

Probably too late for you, but Brooklyn Inn has a middle space that can accommodate 10 and a back space that can accommodate more. No food, but you can order in. Cash only. Quiet, chill place.

Another restuarant by the folks at Al Di La? (Prospect Heights?)

We ate there last week and quite liked it. We arrived around 9 on a Sunday night and got a seat at the bar (in front of the open kitchen) right away, there was a 15 minute wait for a table. We had the market salad (tasty, not outstanding), the fried spicy chickpeas (quite good, not spicy), two pasta dishes (wild mushroom and squid ink/octupus, both quite good), and the buttermilk panna cotta with rhubarb sauce (good, firm, I love rhubarb) and chocolate bread pudding (very good as long as you don't mind slightly bitter desserts). Staff was lovely and knowledgable, food and wine were good, atmosphere friendly and laid back, we will totally return.

Great brunch at Kevin's on Van Brunt

Went to Kevin's for brunch today - I had pancakes, my sister had fish tacos, we shared a large pot of coffee. Delicious, more than (or less than?) reasonably priced. Place was very cute in a totally non-cutesy way, staff friendly, and food came quickly. The 61 bus stops right out front. Will definitely try again for dinner.

Brooklyn Beer Bars Part 6 - Double Windsor.

I went here last night for the first time -- really enjoyed it. The pinot grigio was $5 and just fine, the pork sandwich was quite tasty and had chipotle mayo and the greens were fresh and lightly dressed. The atmosphere was laid back, the music enjoyable and not intrusive, and there was a nice crowd but it wasn't crowded. I'll be back!

Sustainable sushi in Brooklyn? (x-post from Manhattan board)

Thanks for the information. I'm also addicted to sushi and worried about sustainability.

taco trucks in and around the city

There used to be a great one in Sunset Park, Brooklyn, on 5th avenue between 43rd and 44th Street. People lined up at all hours of the night. I'm looking for another truck, but in the meantime there are good tacos elsewhere in the neighborhood. Take a look around on the boards. Try Ricos Tacos.

ISO: Great dinner near LIU - Brooklyn

Had a delightful dinner at Caffe e Vino this evening. Place is cozy, staff is lovely. Wine and beer only, I think. I had pasta with mixed mushrooms -- quite good -- and the ricotta cheesecake was delicious. So totally different than regular cheesecake. Light and airy.

sustainably farmed/caught shrimp

I don't suppose you know how to spell/say that in Chinese? The fish market near me does not run to English signs most of the time.

That sounds very promising. Can't wait till December! My Asian market doesn't run to English signs, but I'll see what I can do. Thanks.

sustainably farmed/caught shrimp

I'm on the hunt for shrimp (frozen or otherwise) that are farmed or caught in a sustainable manner. A small amount of online research (thank you Monterey Bay list) has pointed me towards shrimp farmed/caught in the US or Canada. Unfortunately, I have not had any luck finding these in grocery stores.

So, I'm turning to the Chow folks. Any ideas? Ideally, it would be somewhere between downtown Brooklyn (where I work) and Sunset Park (where I live), although I wouldn't mind a jaunt over to Bay Ridge or somewhere else near by.

New Dumpling House in Sunset Park, 53rd just off Eighth

I tried this place the other day after your recommendation and really liked it -- had the pork and chive fried dumplings and the filling was, as advertised, moist and tasty. I bought 50 of the frozen pork and chinese vegetable which I've been eating all week. Next time, I'll have the pancakes.

Restaurant Picks in Sunset Park area of Brooklyn

Try searching the board for Sunset Park - there are a number of threads that would be relevant. Most of the eating experiences around here are very casual and inexpensive -- to get you started: very casual Ricos Tacos (51st? above 5th) or more restauranty Tacos Matamoros (on 5th btwn 45th and 46th). On 8th Ave, I can't get enough of the hole in the wall Yun Nan Flavor Snack Shop (49th below 8th) and I'm liking Metrocafe a lot (51stish and 8th) these days. There are a lot more specific recommendations in other threads.

Metro Cafe in Sunset

Ordered from here the other night - fried pork dumplings and Kung Pao shrimp. I immediately kicked myself for the dumplings -- fried food + delivery = soggy -- only not! The food came in under 25 minutes (I do only live a couple blocks away), the dumplings had a crispy exterior and a very tasty filling and the shrimp was VERY spicy with a pleasant charred taste. I inhaled the dumplings and ate the shrimp over several meals -- my mouth needed a chance to cool down.

Thanks for the recommendation! It's great to have a place that matches quality Chinese food with delivery in the neighborhood.

If you like Chinese Food and haven't been to the Yunnan Shoppe, your making a MISTAKE!

I could not agree more. The hot and sour dumplings are amazing and I love the spicy meat as well. I haven't had the cold noodles yet -- I'll add them to my list, but the dumplings make it hard focus on anything else. Oh, those dumplings.

Advice for Bay Ridge Day Trip?

Thanks for the report! You've inspired me to head over there for a day soon. (I live MUCH closer than you, so there's really no excuse!)

Advice for Bay Ridge Day Trip?

The G now runs to 4th ave and 9th Street so you can take that to the R, although you might be better off going into the city and getting the N at 14th and taking it to 59th and either walking or getting the R for a couple blocks.

I love Tanoreen and assume they are still open, although haven't checked recently. I haven't done this - but have always wanted to spend a day in the park and then walking the path by the belt parkway/water.

Dinner in/near Red Hook/Carroll Gardens?

Hmmm, Red's Produce is looking like a top contender -- since we're hitting Jalopy at 9, so low key and close by sounds pretty good. Ferdinando's also sounds good.

Am storing some of these other ones for future reference. Would love to hear more!

Dinner in/near Red Hook/Carroll Gardens?

I'm headed to Jalopy (315 Columbia, basically at the BQE) and am looking for a good, inexpensive to moderately priced dinner within a 10 (or I suppose 15) minute walk. No cuisine preferences. Any ideas? Thanks!

Trader Joe's Brooklyn?

I went lunch time (12:30) on Tuesday -- well-populated but not crushingly so and no wait to checkout. A friend has gone twice after work (6:30-6:45) and said it was crowded, but not anything like Union Sq, and he waited less than 5 min to checkout.

Best Middle Eastern Lamb in Brooklyn?

Best lamb I've had in the past couple months was at First Oasis in Bay Ridge on 4th in the 90s. I had a lamb with rice and veggies in filo dough (can't remember what it was called) and it was amazing -- that night and the next day for lunch. I haven't been to Tanoreen in a year or so, but last time I was there we had an assortment of lamb dishes, all very good.

Those would be my choices.

First Oasis, Syrian in Bay Ridge

We went there tonight. Everything was fantastic -- we had veggie couscous, spinach pie, shrimp, and the lamb ouzi. Flavors were subtle and delicious. The atmosphere and service was friendly. Prices were reasonable. Highly recommended.

Any glogg or mulled wine about?

I think I saw some advertised at Vin Rouge, 5th Ave at c 18th St in Brooklyn. Also, I remember it smelling something of mulled wine.

Best Place to Buy Herb Seeds/Plants in Brooklyn

If you want to start now, Shannon's is the nursery on Fort Hamilton across from Greenwood. We were there yesterday and they have herbs in pots as well as a large (in my opinion) collection of seeds. This is a good time to go as they aren't crowded yet.
