Pls help me choose 1 stop for Cambodian in Lowell!?!
In spite of other opinions I still like Tepthjida Khmer. I really enjoy their Loc - Lac and always order the beef version. I also like one of their soups which reminds me of the Vietnamese Can Chua because it has tomatos and chunks of pineapple in it. I usually order this with shrimp. Their version of "Drunken Noodles" are also quite good and although not typically Cambodian they do taste great.
Pls help me choose 1 stop for Cambodian in Lowell!?!
I went to Simply Khmer specifically to try their "famous" hot wings. IMHO they were some of the most over rated Asian style wings I have ever had. Heavily battered, over cooked with a sticky sweet tasy somewhat spicy sauce. In a word, Yuck! I would not say that any of the other things we ordered had "strong authentic flavors" either. Overall pretty mediocre except their servings are large and prices are low.
Pls help me choose 1 stop for Cambodian in Lowell!?!
I would suggest Tepthida Khmer. I tried Simply Khmer recently and have to say I wasn't imprssed. It is slightly less expensive than Tepthida Khmer but the quality of the food and the overal presentation were not as good. Tepthida also has a nicer atmosphere and although the service is generally good at times it can be slow.
Sushi chef for a party on the North Shore?
I would suggest contacting Kenji-san at Sushi Island in Wakefield. If he can'r do it he might know of someone in the area because he is well connected with many other Japanese restaurant owners.
One Dinner Only
Even if you choose do to do the Omakase course at O-Ya you can let the waitstaff know if there are any types of seafood you don't like and they will tailor the course for your tastes. If you really want a unique dining experience then O-Ya would be my suggestion.
Interesting Restaurants Around Legacy Place in Dedham? (It seems to be all chains...)
I would suggest Siam Lotus on Rte 1. My wife and I dine there regularly and have always enjoyed it. The service is always good and the food is quite authentic.
Yakitori Zai
I've often said that among Japanese foods that Boston lacks the most are a good Yakitori-ya and a good ramen place. I'm really hoping that the new Yakitori-Zai fills one of the voids. Granted that most Americans are not familiar with the more esoteric offerings of an authentic yakitori-ya but I think there are enough of us around who are to make this place a big hit. I agree with Itaunas that unless they grill over real charcoal it will be a disappoinment.
Yakitori Zai
Being a frequent traveler to Japan I am really hoping this place is authentic and not just an Americanized version of yakitori which usually ends up being just chicken breast or thighs with teriayaki sauce. As stated by Cork, I too hope there are some "nasty bits" too which make for a truely memorbale dining experience.
Suggestions for a celebration dinner?
My suggestion would be Bistro du Midi. Great room, wonderful food and service.
Please advise, Saturday dinner for 3, similar to Bondir?
My suggestion would be Bistro du Midi on Boylston St. The food and service and very good. The foods tends to be creative and focuses on seasonal indgredients. In my opinion they have the best version of the classic French Boulbaisse in Boston. My wife loves one of the appetisers, Seared Prawns, Ragu Of Shrimp & Fregola Sarda, Smoked Paprika Emulsion. She usually orders a double order as an entree. I also like the setting of restaurant because it overlooks the Boston Public Garden so if you have an early reservation and request a table near the front windows you can enjoy all the trees that are flowering this time of year.
seattle fam coming for 4 days may 10-15 for first time! need help
Welcome to Boston.
For a good lobster roll at a typical New England style fried seafood place try Belle Isle Seafood in Winthrop which is adjacent to East Boston near Logan Airport. If you have a rental car it is easy to get over there. I'll caution you that Belle Isle is NOT a fancy place. In fact it is a small mostly takeout place but they serve excellent fried New England style seafood like Fried Clams, Fried Haddock as well as a great lobster roll. Their lobster roll is a bargain at $18.00 because it contains the meat from a 1 1/2 lb lobster in a light mayo type dressing on a toasted hot dog roll and because of the volume they sell it is always very fresh. There is only minimal seating inside the place but a lot of people park out back and eat in their cars while watching airplanes arrive and depart from Logan. There are other excellent Lobster Rolls at Island Creek Oyster Bar (ICOB) and Neptune Oyster but for the price and quality Belle Isle is damn good. I hope you enjoy your visit and return to Seattle with many positive food experiences in our fair city.
Where can I find Boston's best and freshest fried haddock plate?
My vote would be Belle Isle Seafood in Winthrop. Their lobster roll is also extremly good and packed with feshly cooked lobster at a reasonable price $18.00 but their Fried Haddock is always excellent too
Spending A Week in K.L. Where should we eat?
Many thanks for the recs. They all sound good. We will be stayingt at the Mandarin Oriental Hotel so any spots in and around that area would also be appreciated. Thanks again.
Family Get-together - Andover, Stoneham, Woburn, Burlington, Billerica, Lowell areas
If Chinese food would be acceptable I would suggest Szechuan Garden in Woburn. The restaurant is in an old historic colonial house right off Rte 95/128. They have a very nice room on the second floor that would easily accomodate your party. The manager is very open to putting a menu together that would appeal to wide range of tastes. They of course feature Szechuan style dishes but they can also do all the more common things that even children would like. It is also quite affordable. I have hosted numerous business functions there and have always come away feeling good about the food and the service.
Spending A Week in K.L. Where should we eat?
In mid April me and several colleagues will be in K.L. on business. All of us are adventurous eaters and would love to get a few recommendations on places we should not miss. I know we would like to try a few of K.L.'s favorite dishes. We are open to any types of Asian food be it Malaysian, Chinese, Thai, Japanese, etc. Price isn't too much of a concern so it would be great to hear about a couple of the more high-end places too. Thanks in advance from a group of Boston USA C-Hounds.
Romantic Dinner, staying in Beacon Hill
I would suggest Bistro Du Midi. It is not far from Beacon Hill, the food is excellent and it has nice atmosphere. Try their Prawn appetizer and the Classic Boulabaisse.
Top line food in a fun atmosphere?
My suggestions would be Scampo in the Liberty Hotel and/or Bistro Du Midi. Great food and atmosphere at both.
Porter square must-visits?
Sort of in the same neighborhoods would be Gran Gusto if you are interested in Italian. It's in North Cambridge.
Advice needed for a special dinner, probably North End-ish
Out of the list I woulod choose Prezza for consistently good high-end Italian. I also really like Erbaluce for very good and somewhat unique Italian. Both places are good for a long dinner and neither are very noisy so you can talk with your friends.
Where to dine in Melrose?
All the places you mentionare in the same category as Mexico Lindo, Meh! Turner's is okay but just okay. Not much to recommend in Melrose
What's good at Scampo?
I never miss the Elephant Ear Walking for a starter to share. Simple dish but very delicious. I also like the Kurobuta Pork Chop and the very simple spaghetti with Lydia's Marinara sauce. I find the desserts at Scampo mediocre at best.
"Romantic" spot near Pru for drinks & apps
I would suggest either the lounge/bar at the Mandarin Oriental Hotel or the Bristol Lounge at the Four Seasons. Both have nice atmosphere, good food and drinks and are quiet compared to many other places.
"Best in Class" restaurants
Japanese: Sushi Island & Toraya
Japanese Izakaya style: Shiki (Not quite like Japan but very good for Boston)
Chinese Seafood: East Ocean City
Szechuan Chinese: Szechuan Gourmet (Billerica)
Indian: The Pongal, Billerica
Cambodian: Tepthida Khmer, Lowell MA
French: Bistro Du Midi (Love their version of Bouillabaisse)
High End Italian: Prezza
Low End Seafood: Belle Isle lobster roll
High End Seafood: Island Creek Oyster Bar
Best Dessert Menu: Asana ( Quintuple Chocolate Cheescake and Strawberry Shortcake)
Sichuan Gourmet
For the past two weeks they have been offering a special Lunar New Year menu with 8 to 10 items on it. It's written in Chinese only but the waitstaff will give you rough translations of each item. We tried a braised mushroom dissh which came in a small wok with a small burner underneath to keep it warm. We also tried a smoky bacon with black bean sauce that was outstanding too. One my all time favorites in the fish and tofu in a black pepper sauce. This is not spicy but the flavors and textures are great.
U-Me in Stoneham? Chris VR et al
I know you are big Sushi Island fan so I will be surprised if you like U-me. I usually avoid so called "Asian Fusion" places because they usually don't end up doing any one of the cuisines they are attempting to do very well. U-me is a hodge podgeof Japanese, Korean and Thai. I tried it one time shortly after they openned and have never gone back even though we live about 5 minutes away from it.
Birthday Dinner in Boston
I suggest O-Ya if you are willing to spend $250 per person. I would ask them to do a "omakase" for about $125 or so person and then select a few of the cooked items from the regular menu. The mushroom dish is fantastic. For drinks let someone suggest one or more bottles from their great sake list and I think it will all add up to very memorbale dining experience.
Where should I go for my birthday dinner in Boston?
I would second or third the recs for Scampo. The entire Liberty Hotel is a great venue, Scampo has a nicce upscale "buzz" on most nights and the food is great. For apps I would suggest sharing the Elephant Ear Walking and/or the signature Lobster Pizza. For mains the Kurobuta Pork Chop is excellent.
Sushi Newbie
I would certainly be open to joining you guys some night. Let know when?
Confused & can't pick a restaurant for anniversary night
One restaurant that doesn't get much play on this board is Asana at the Mandarin Oriental Hotel. My wife and I have always enjoyed the dinners and lunches we have had there. The food is wonderful, the service is always impeccable and the room is very elegant. In my opinion they have one of the best pastry chefs in Boston too. Their Quintuple Chocolate Cheesecake and their version of Strawberry Shortcake are nothing short of suberb. I would highly reccomend it if you are looking for a place to have a quiet, romantic and non rushed dinner.
Sushi Newbie
I have found that natto is an acquired taste whether you are Japanese or not. I have met many Japanese who don't like it and as you may know it is mainly a Kanto specialty so people who live in Kansai or other parts of the country are less likely to enjoy it. In my case the surprise that a gaijin would like natto has more to do with the fact that I am not Japanese rather than anything else. All this talk about natto and other Japanese food has made me hungry for another trip to S.I ASAP!!
