Mermaid Inn or AquaGrill?

We will be going out on Saturday night. I am not particular about the neighborhood. I am not from the city so we will be traveling by cab or metro.

Mermaid Inn or AquaGrill?

My wife and I are in the city for her birthday. I want to take her to a good seafood restaurant. Not too pricey or fancy. We are traveling and I just don’t want us to have to schlep fine dining attire with us. I am looking for good quality seafood in a nice relaxed atmosphere. We are both foodies and love good food and high end restaurants, I just don’t want to go that route for this birthday. We are happiest when the food is good down to earth eating, the service is excellent, and the cocktails are creative with a nice laid back atmosphere.

Do you recommend AquaGrill or Mermaid Inn UWS? I’ve done a fair amount of searching on the board and keep coming back to these two restaurants. Thoughts, pros, cons, editorials?

Thank you from a Boston foodie

Dinner for 15 in Framingham Need Advice

I want to thank everyone for replying. This has been helpful. I recommended John Harvard and Stones Public House to the person coordinating this event. The Chinese place(s) just did not seem to fit the people that are going.

Many thanks for the insightful feedback. Boston Beefeater

Dinner for 15 in Framingham Need Advice

I am looking for suggestions on where to take 15 work associates for dinner in January. Some are from this area and some are from outside the country. Middle of the road for expense. Not the Capital Grille and not the 99.

Any ideas?

Deuxave, Troquet or Ribelle for Milestone Birthday?

And the winner is...... Deuxave! We went to Deuxave and had an outstanding meal. It was everything I had hoped for and more. Most importantly, my wife was thrilled. I thank everyone for your feedback and advice. Chow Hound has once again lived up to its reputation and served it core purpose.

I had the lobster gnocchi and my wife had the beet salad as appetizers. Both were superb. I should have had the gnocchi supersized to an entree. It was that good.

For entrees, we had the duck breast and seared tuna. Again superb. Both of us would have licked the plates if we were not in public.

We share the dark chocolate cremeux. Delicious.

The only down side if there was one, was the service. Our waiter was excellent in all regards except one. He did not pace the dinner well. We were seated fairly early in the evening and I think he did not have a lot of tables. Very attentive and extremely knowledgeable about the menu. However, we felt rushed. We felt that we had to deliberately slow down our eating to try and make the meal last longer. It was not as nice of a leisurely relaxing meal as it could have been. We have both waited tables in past lives and love and appreciate great service. He was everything we like in a waiter, personable, knowledgeable, attentive, in tune with our dining needs etc. He just needed to slow things down a tad.

One other worthy note was the bar tending. We went to the bar afterwards for a cocktail or two. There were two bartenders, one left early to go home. Both the original bartender and the replacement were professionally polite. We did note that when two different groups of people sat down at the bar they lit up and were very warm, friendly and gregarious with them. Turns out, the people worked in the industry at other restaurants. For the patrons at the bar not in the industry, they were cool and professional. We would have liked to have had a little bit of the warmth and friendliness shown their friends. We understand we are not in the industry and we are not their friends. We were not looking for or expecting that level of engagement. However, a little bit of warmth and making us feel welcome at the bar would have been nice.

Overall, we had a great time. The pace and lack of warmth at the bar are very very minor complaints at worst. I highly recommend eating at Deuxave. We are both interested in Ribelle from a food standpoint but wanted a more elegant meal and we got what we wanted. Now to venture over to Ribelle after the holiday rush.

Thanks again for the spot on recommendations.

Deuxave, Troquet or Ribelle for Milestone Birthday?

Thanks, I get the sense that Deuxave is more elegant and a milestone birthday calls for more elegance.

Deuxave, Troquet or Ribelle for Milestone Birthday?

I am taking my spouse out for a milestone birthday. We both like good restaurants and my spouse follows the comings and goings of chefs/restaurants in Boston. We have been to the "classics" Clio, Mistral, No 9 L'espalier etc. We have not been to Ribelle, Troquet or Deuxave yet. Your thoughts on which one to try is appreciated. I have yet to pick a poor birthday dinner, I need another success this year.

Thanks in advance

Karl's Sausage Kitchen Trip

You have to try the liverwurst. Fine is a lot better than the coarse. It is the best anywhere. The crud that you get in supermarkets doesn't even come close. They make it themselves and it is awesome. Their landerjaeger is really really good too. I like the softer fresher ones. I've tried various sausages and they have all been good. Their bratwurst is as good as any in the Boston area. The people are nice. Some of the counter clerks are German and can appear to be reserved but ask them questions and they warm up instantly.

Thanksgiving dinner in Boston

Try the Hawthorne Hotel in Salem. They put on a pretty good spread. It is nice, not to over the top fancy but no riff raff either. They may tell you at this point that they are booked but they will accomodate you if you show up. Due to family reasons, we eat there and have not been disapointed yet. There is a huge buffet with more choices and food than you can possibly eat.

San Diego Fish Tacos & Burritos

I was just refered to a Burrito place called Santana's by one of my employees that used to live there. Any thoughts on this place? Bostonbeefeater

San Diego Fish Tacos & Burritos

Thank you for all of the awesome feedback. It is looking like Mariscos German may be the place to go. I am in SD for two nights starting on Friday so I will be able to check out a couple of places. I hope that either I or my wife can reciprocate someday on suggestions on where to eat in Boston. Bostonbeefeater

Newport Beach Places to eat

I will be staying in the Newport Beach area and driving to a convention at Disney Land each day for a week. I am looking for a couple of good places to eat that are not too fancy, too expensive or too touristy and are not chains. I am hoping to find a local restaurant with excellent local food. I will be travelling with a couple of guys from work and we are all on a limited budget. I want to stay away from anything Disney. Good seafood or Mexican is a plus. References to a local food specialty in addition to places to eat are appreciated. Thank you, Bostonbeefeater

San Diego Fish Tacos & Burritos

I will be in SD for a couple of days on business and am looking for a place to eat a good burrito and another place to get some fish tacos. I abhor fast food chains and tourist traps. I am looking for a local mom and pop type of place that only locals know about. We can't get good burritos in Boston and I hear SD is the place to get them. Though we get wicked awesome fresh fish here in New England, no seems to know how to make a good fish taco. Thanks, Bostonbeefeater
