NY hound visiting San Francisco. Must Try Foods?

Oysters and an anchor steam at Swan's Oyster Depot. Hangtown Fry at Tadich Grill -- it gets no more Old School San Francisco than that.

Chaz, its Greg

Does anybody know where somebody can get great cocktails and inventive ecelctic cuisine served with a Southern sensibility?

Best burger in Berkeley?

2nd Triple Rock. Mesa Burger and a red ale.

Where are the worst cocktails in LA?

Agreed. Horrible margaritas. I mean I like the place - was there the night they opened. But (except for those seeking the intentionally bad) order beer for God's sake.

Gastropubs in LA - maybe it's time to start a list?

Hudson House in Redondo Beach.

Craft cocktail bars in the OC

320 Main is probably the best in OC, but Lola Gaspar in Santa Ana is not bad. I had a very good mezcal based cocktail there. Fresh ingredients and well made.

Fried Chicken in Long Beach

Roscoe's and Johnny Rebs are both great. if you're willing to venture west of Long Beach, try Flossie's in Torrance/Redondo Beach. The real deal.

Blood Orange... Anything! What's Good?

The Blood Orange Diablo cocktail at Hudson House in Redondo Beach is fantastic. Loved it so much I'm going to try my hand at a homemade version tonight.

crabmeat and prawns a la Monza/Tadich Grill [moved from San Francisco]

Last Meal in Los Angeles

Nothing is more quintissential Los Angeles than Spago. That being said, I would go for your favorite Mexican taco stand, get some mexican beers, and eat at a spot on the beach, it's not just food you're leaving.

Also, I have to say that Burger Boy's post now has me jonesing for a Musso & Frank martini.

Help with Beach Cities Birthday Dinner

Bottle Inn, Hermosa Beach. Sit on the patio for an ocean view, good Italian. Darren's in Manhattan Beach is also fantastic, but stick to the bar menu for your price point.

Best Fried Okra?

I'm with you on the ranch dressing being out of line. I'll just have to break out Mom's recipe myself this weekend.

Best Fried Okra?

I'm looking for the best fried okra in Los Angeles, preferable near Hermosa Beach (home) or Century City (work). I've tried Johnny Reb's in Long Beach, and it's the only I've had so far that comes close to Mom's. Lucille's fell far short.

Wine seller in South Bay?

Ditto Manhattan Fine Wines. These guys know their stuff!

BEST STEAK IN LA? OTHER THAN CUT

I had a bad experience with El Segundo Fleming's as well. Waiter spilled sauce on one of the diners and not even an offer of free dessert or other effort to make up for ruining a pair of slacks other than half-hearted "sorry." Didn't even offer to pay for dry cleaning. Weak. Steak is OK, but falls below top end steakhouses in LA (Cut, Wolfgang's, Palm, Mastro's). Wine list horribly overpriced.

BEST STEAK IN LA? OTHER THAN CUT

Wolfgang's, Wolfgang's, Wolfgang's. It's all abot the beef -- and this is as good as it gets in town. Mastro's steak not quite as good as Wolfgang's (but still a great steak) but one helluva scene upstairs at the bar.

Best Margarita in Los Angeles?

Thanks for starting what was a long string of El Conquistador recommendations. I'm 6'3" and 220 so I can put away some agave myself, and my friends have called my house margarita the "Spacecake" so they have accsed me of just this type of activity. Looking forward to it. Just wish it wasn't so far from home. By the way, if anyone is ever in Hermosa Beach order the "Boogaloo Margarita" at Cafe Boogaloo, it's the real deal.

Best Place to Sit at Bar for Dinner in Century City Area?

If you like Cut, try Wolfgang's Steakhouse (proprietor is former head waiter at legendary Peter Luger steakhouse in NY) on Canon in Beverly Hills. Steak is amazing. Have a couple of salads, split a porterhouse, and finish with real NY cheesecake with schlag (real semi-whipped cream, great).

The Straight Beef on Wolfgangs

As much as I usually hate to just agree -- I do. The wines were Vegas sized triple markups (and higher). Very few deals. I had lunch there the other day and the steak sandwich with a very cold Becks (VERY frsty mug) went down very well. I just hope they adjust their wine pricing to conform to the LA market.

Best Margarita in Los Angeles?

I'm on the search for the best margarita in Los Angeles. The best I've had so far is at Cut Steakhouse, and Ciudad does a good job as well.

South Bay Favorites (VERY LONG)

Wait no longer. Run -- don't walk, to Uncle Bill's for the bacon-cheddar waffle. It's my favorite. I didn't have the bravery until I went in early one morning still inebriated from the prior night. I haven't looked back.

South Bay Favorites (VERY LONG)

Darren's in Manhattan Beach, really adventurous and well executed menu. I have to second Cafe Boogaloo. Try the short ribs, whih melt in your mouth, and they have the best bartenders in the South Bay so order a drink and enjoy.

South Bay Favorites (VERY LONG)

Second Flossie's, which s South Bay. Best Fried Chicken in LA -- better than Kizzy's. Flossie was Kizzy's original chef. Also Mac n Cheese to weaken yo' knees.

Best Burger in LA

Hinano! You just made me hungry, dammit! Best bar burger in LA County since the demise of the Honey Bucket in Long Beach.

Best cheap Food in LA.

What? No Casa Bianca in Eagle Rock? Legendary.

Wolfgang's in Beverly Hills - Anyone been?

I guess my point is that if they'e going to be in Los Angeles they should be able to make one of the quintessential Los Angeles drinks (and not pass it off to the barback). But I will take wholehearted pleasure in training the bartenders on how to make a good margarita. It will take many visists and many steaks -- but I'm more than willing. Those steaks are amazing! Can't wait to try the burger at lunch.

Wolfgang's in Beverly Hills - Anyone been?

Come on people. The LA Times today says Puck has no comment until he speaks with attorneys. What? Wolfgang is the owner's name and it's known in the food world as the Luger's spinoff, quite a pedigree, and excellent in its own regard. Anyone who confuses these two great steakhouses with each other should just eat at Sizzler and save their money.

Wolfgang's in Beverly Hills - Anyone been?

Best steak I've had in Los Angeles, but I agree on the outrageously priced wine list. Only a couple of reasonably priced wines for those who happen to have the knowledge of what to pick. Mostly priced like a Las Vegas wine list. Cocktails were OK (good manhattan, poor margarita), but the bartender sluffed me off to the barback who made the poor margarita (my only complaint. Service at the bar could be better, service at the table was great.

Best Burger in LA?

Had a very nice burger at The Bull Pen in Redondo Beach last night. Bakery fresh bun and nice dense patty with quality beef.

Best Burger in LA?

I had a happy hour burder an the El Segundo McCormick & Schmick's which we took home in a doggy bag and played hockey with the next day. It was ready for hockey when we ordered it but it was dark.
