apple pan dowdy

I just had this for the first time at Casellula on 52nd btwn 9th and 10th a few weeks ago. It took some convincing from the waitress because I don't even like apples, but it was absolutely delicious. Apples (and maybe caramel sauce?) baked with a cheddary biscuit on top. Definitely worth checking out.

East Village Surprise Party

Looking for a low key spot in the East Village to host a surprise 25th birthday dinner that will include 15-20 people. Can't be too expensive as many of the guests are still students. Was thinking something along the lines of The Smith, but really any type of food would be fine. Anyone have any suggestions?

Union Square/Gramercy Cafe or Bar for Bookclub

It's my turn to pick the meeting place for my bookclub, which tends to prefer a coffeeshop or bar on the quiet side. I want to find a place in my new neighborhood (in the vicinity of 19th and 3rd) but don't know it very well. Any ideas?

TEENS CELBRATING BDAY

It sounds like you want to find them a fun place to have dinner so they don't want to just leave and go drink somewhere else (however teenagers manage to do these things).

When my sister was a teenager (though a little older than yours, probably 18), she and her friends celebrated a birthday at Buddakan and had a great time, even though they couldn't drink. I think they enjoyed the food, but I know they enjoyed the scene, the people-watching and the attractive waitstaff even more. As far as where they'll be able to find 16 year old boys, that I do not know.

Beer

From there, you might also want to check out Valhalla on 54th & 9th, which also has a very large beer selection.

wine bar in midtown

You might also want to look into Bocca di Bacco, on 9th btwn 55th and 54th. They have a pretty large selection of wine and def have some small plates. Haven't tried the food yet, but I think Roberto Passon has some sort of ownership interest.

Valentine's Day

I'm looking for a place to celebrate my birthday (which happens to be Valentine's Day). In recent years, we've gone with Telepan and Cookshop, both of which we loved, but I'm really hoping to avoid a "special Valentine's Day" limited menu. My mom would like to try Hearth but doesn't have her heart set on it.

Any ideas? (Not looking for romantic so much as a nice dinner with my parents).

Salt

Anyone have any thoughts on Salt (on MacDougal)?

Alternatives to per se?

My family was planning to celebrate my upcoming graduation from law school with a dinner at per se. Because there are 10 of us, we would be required to use the private room. However, someone has already booked it for that night, so we are now trying to come up with some alternatives (that hopefully won't be booked for May already!). My mom would like to find somewhere that is special, with excellent food but nothing too "newfangled" (she did not like the food at wd-50).

Some of my initial thoughts were Le Bernadin, Bouley or Daniel. We've all been to EMP and would rather go somewhere we haven't all been already.

Thanks!

New Midtown Espresso option

i love that place, it's my go-to for an espresso whenever i'm near grand central. great coffee and really friendly service (never had the food).

Saturday lunch in Nantucket - ideas?

i just read another post elsewhere that says straight wharf might be opening for lunch. you might want to look into that one too.

Saturday lunch in Nantucket - ideas?

first, and most importantly, juice bar is the best ice cream in nantucket (if not anywhere) and is very close to the ferry. as far as lunch, i'm not sure exactly what you're looking for. there are several pub-like places in town (the brotherhood, atlantic cafe), but for something a little bit nicer, i would recommend the boarding house (12 federal street, a favorite for my family for a nice but fairly casual dinner) or arno's (41 main street, a little more casual and not quite as good), or fog island cafe (7 s. water street, very casual, excellent brunch--try the trail mix pancakes). hope that helps.

sunday pre-theater dinner

taboon on 10th at 52nd is excellent mediterranean with all entrees $25 and under (and great focaccia with tzatziki!), eatery on 9th at 53rd is a decent option for american with nothing over $25 on the menu, and roberto passon on 9th at 50th is good for italian with all entrees $20 or under.

Little Owl

I've only been once, and while I thought it was charming and the food was definitely above average (loved the sliders!), I wasn't as blown away as I had anticipated.

First 1st date in a LONG time

The Place is good for a first date, romantic enough without trying too hard (the last time I went, we were seated next to a first date where the guy was clearly trying too hard, which made for amusing eavesdropping but was not the fault of the restaurant). And if it's warm, you can sit near the side walk for people watching, which might be helpful if conversation is slow. The food is good (not excellent) and the restaurant is charming.

Red Cat recs?

As I've said before, I liked the Red Cat but didn't love it cause everything was pretty greasy. Having said that, the tempura green beans were worth the grease.

dinner for 3 girls saturday night in the ev or les

My girlfriend also has a tomato allergy, so I feel the pain of trying to find things for her to eat. If you like seafood, Bondi Road (LES) is pretty good and fun but not formal.

Landmarc in the TWC: do they take reservations? How long the wait if not?

I haven't been yet either, but it seems that others on the board (http://www.chowhound.com/topics/394358) have experienced waits of 40 min to an hour.

Pre-Theater Asian

Bann on 50th between 8th and 9th for Korean

Any opinion on Mint in NYC

I enjoyed the food and didn't find it to be at all lacking in flavor. I've been twice and would say that both times the service was above average. In fact, the last time I was there our server was very accomodating and even brought us out a free dessert. And the cocktail menu is creative and fun on top of that.

Saturday Dinner in West 40s/50s - Suggestions?

I would agree that there is not much that fits that description, but I would add Eatery to the list as well.

Great Restaurants Chelsea Area

Tia Pol for awesome tapas, Cookshop for more of a splurge. Red Cat is ok but I think there is better food to be had for that amount of money.

Need Help - Meeting Friend in for Coffe in East 40's

I would have seconded Macchiato had I been paying enough attention to see this yesterday. Great coffee and friendly and helpful staff.

Turkey dog, chicken dog, or otherwise reduced-fat NYC-style hot dogs?

Better Burger definitely has turkey dogs and soy dogs. I can't speak of the turkey dogs, but the soy dogs are pretty good. You know, for soy dogs.

Sunday brunch pre-matinee

Roberto Passon on 50th and 9th is good for Italian.

W. 45th restaurant suggestion?

Lattanzi on 46th is my grandparents' favorite Italian place, and they are Upper East side type restaurant people as well.

casual meet the parents dinner

I disagree with Red Cat. I went with my girlfriend for our anniversary expecting big things and we were disappointed. The food was ok but very greasy, and on top of that, it was loud and we couldn't hear each other at all.

Whym

I live in the area and have eaten at Whym many times. The food is pretty good, though not outstanding. There is a weekday lunch special and the lunch crowd tends to be a bit older than the dinner crowd, at least in my experience. But I am in my mid 20's and have taken my parents, who are older than you, for both brunch and dinner there and neither of them complained that they felt like senior citizens (and that is a frequent complaint they have of restaurants that I generally choose to take them to).

Amalia

I was just going to ask the same thing. I have reservations for Wednesday but have been walking by it everyday this week and could have sworn it didn't look like it was ready to open yet...

Nice festive dinner near Lincoln Center

Telepan over Josephina, hands down.
