Spanish Olives in Toronto

I've bought some arbequinas (my favourite spanish olive) at the Olive and Olives recently.
They are not too far from your Leslieville location, over in Riverside - just East DeGrassi street on the south side.

Sweet on Toronto

Hi Sugarcube - I used to live very near these two places but have moved away at about the same time Konditor went out of biz, hence have not tried the new place. It's name has something to do with harvest - maybe Harvest Table or Harvest Time? I've been told that it is more of a "sandwich cafe" type of place and they have recently applied for a liqour licence...that's all i know.

Sweet on Toronto

Sugarcube, better get out there and update your list - Konditor has been closed for about a year now, a new business in it's place...

spanish olives in TO?

I've had good luck with fresh (not heavily brined) olives at La Fromagerie, 868 College st.
416.516.4278. The olive you describe sounds remarkably similar to the one I experienced in Spain a couple of years back - while not an olive lover, I fell instantly in love with these "quick brined" olives that every restaurant seemed to serve there. These specific ones were manzanillas and I was thrilled to find them at la Fromagerie. Also available: arbequinas (beautful tiny black ones...yum!) and many, many other.
Good luck!

Europa Pastries - Danforth (e) of Pape

I second what others have said - the custard tarts are very good but I would buy nothing else there; having tried a lot of their stuff and not liked any of it to date. But those tarts...mmmm!

Something new in Leslieville?

The place is going to be called "What are you looking at?" According to the sign in the window, it will be a bar/pub type of place...

Mala Strana Prague

Hi,
I recommend Restaurant David - definitely walking distance, good quality food, both traditional czech and international.
Tržiště 21
118 00 Praha 1, Praha, Czech Republic
Also, not as close as David but not terribly far:
La Degustation
www.ladegustation.cz -
This only if you are interested in tasting menus for that is all they do.
I recommend them for the same reason - respect for local and traditional food, as well as classic international items.
I wish you a great stay in the most beautiful city I have ever been to.
Please report back - where you went and how you enjoyed it.

Where to buy quark cheese (túró)

túró is also sold as "pressed cottage cheese", available at Loblaws (health/organic food section). I have also bought some at IGA. Various health food stores carry it, as well. It is usually located near the yogurt selections. Watch for various fat contents - 0.5% to 4%, the latter is most reminiscent of what you had in Hungary. Another problem is salt - for some reason canadian manufacturers add salt to it. It is possible, but not easy, to find one without salt. Lastly, these are not packaged in tubs like quark, but in lumpy white plastic "sacks". Good luck.

Where to buy good caramel corn?

Bulk Barn carries very good caramel corn - just make sure it is a busy one, so it's fresh.

Name this produce

No idea on the grapes but your melon is, almost certainly, simply known as "yellow watermelon". A quick google search will produce some pics to confirm. I've also purchased it with a sticker bearing a "sweet susie" name.

what can i use to replace dates in date squares?

you can also try plums or prunes (dried plums) - the texture of these is nearly identical to that of dates. Also agree with Higgette on apricots - don't write them off too quickly. The right amount of tang is key...good luck

Lady and Sons (Butcher) = Disappointing

This doesn't sound too good...A couple of weeks ago, I received an invitation to their first anniversary "do" due to happen this coming weekend, BBQ and all...I was looking forward to it. I do hope they get to stay! Anyone has more info?

best moussaka on the Danforth

Hey Wolf,
Got an update - not very useful, though. Apparently, one does not go out to have moussaka, you make it yourself. However, each of the two Greek nationals I spoke to suggested a place to go where "the food is pretty nice" - Greek Grill (formerly Mr. Greek?) and The Palace,
near Pape subway...that's it, please do report on your findings.

best moussaka on the Danforth

Hi Wolf,
The cross street is actually Dewhurst, not Donlands, apologies...and I think "Patris" rings a bell...it is across the street from The Square Boy burger place.
I once had a home made moussaka made by a friend's mom, and thought that the one from Patris tasted the closest to that. The meat was actually minced (as opposed to ground up). I'll be talking to her later today and ask her...she must know where the best of the best can be had, having lived in the area for years...will keep you posted.

best moussaka on the Danforth

I've tried moussaka at Pantheon, Kalyvia, Pan, and one at the corner of Donlands and Danforth (the name escapes me now). The only one I didn't like was Pan's. Kalyvia and Pantheon were very good, and the one at Donlands was best, and , in my opinion, most authentic, two summers ago. No recent experience, however. Please report back on your experience. opa!

Arcadian Court Wedding

I have had the pleasure, both as a guest and a worker (during my short catering stint). The venue is, indeed, beautiful. The food, nothing to write home about. Now, I hasten to add, it is adequately prepared. It's just nothing special. The whole operation seems to be budget driven and oriented. For example, the food is served, the servers disapear and won't be seen again, except to clean up. It seemed that, most of them had been sent home after the meal was served. If you need anything that isn't on the table, you'll have to get up and find it yourself - there just isn't anyone to ask for it. This was OK for us, we were looking for privacy, and got it. The sweet table was great, with delicate and unusual items - don't know who prepared those. Hot chocolate was also served that evening - spicy mayan something or another, and I must say it was not drinkable. Chalky, grainy, runny mess. It tasted like the ones made from the powdered mix you get in a grocery store, with some hot pepper flakes mixed in afterwards.
Maybe this can be worked out with your planner - the venue has tons of potential.
Good luck!

Niagara on the Lake's Best

I very much enjoyed my stay and food at The Pillar and Post Inn last summer - a stunning old building, with food and service to match. Well prepared food with attention to detail. Extensive wine list, knowledgeable and attentive yet unobtrusive staff.
I highly recommend it. I stuck my nose in the Peller restaurant and liked what I saw but did not actually dine there. Next time! Happy chow-ing and please report back on where you went and how it was.

"All my favourite foods" caterer... (mini mac and cheese, sliders, etc...) -- Suggestions?

I would try and talk to the Amazing Food Service folks.
I recall attending an event a while back, catered by them, with "comfort food" theme.
Very enjoyable.

Frozen cinnamon danish from restaurant supplier?

These may or may not be the danishes that you're looking for, but La Danoiserie (Montreal) does have wonderful ones. I wouldn't be surprised. They come frozen and pre-proofed. Do not defrost - stick them directly in the oven.

Paris in Toronto

Great french style chocolates can be found at Ambiance Chocolat, 753 Queen Street East, including caramel with fleur de sel.
St.Lawrence Market is your best bet for the rest, as far as I know.

I have never been to Cuba but dined at Julie's with friends who have. We have enjoyed our experience every time. Great drinks, great atmosphere. It should be tried at least once imo.

Lil' Baci...Leslieville's own Terroni??

I have only good things to say, also.
Love the antipasti!
Agree with the high booze price comment, but it is offset by the reasonable prices otherwise.
Anyone tried their desserts? (I haven't)
