ElsieDee....can I say I love your post?
This sentiment "I find myself feeling guilty if we go out for a pricey meal - I'm always thinking "with what we just spent for dinner, a shelter animal could have been spayed/neutered" " is a common utterance for me. Although I tend to sub out "Purse, shoes, dress, jewelry etc....that someone ELSE is wearing" Since I cannot fathom someone spending such obscene amounts of money for objects rather than on helping people or mammals in dire need.

We must be on the same wavelength. I too have over 50 cookbooks and rarely if ever use them. My resolution is to pick 5-10 recipes out of each book ( including sides) and prepare them over the next year!
Good luck to you!

Hi Gail,
Yup, you are correct, 'doggy friendly' does mean patio dining.
Historically October and November are the best weather months of the year for the coast. We are hoping this holds true thru the end of November but realize that it will be a bit chilly.

We visit Carmel about every 3 months (to see my father). Even though I lived there, and visit several times a year we have gotten stuck in a restaurant rut. We always bring the dogs with us and are constantly revisiting the following : The Forge in the Forest, Cassanova and Corkscrew Cafe, Sea Harvest, and Portabella. Then of course there is Bruno's Deli as well.
We are looking to break out of our restuarant rut but of course are limited to pet friendly establishments ( we cannot keep the dogs at the house unfortunately).
In searching I found some places we have not been that are pet friendly and was wondering if anyone could provide some feedback on them. Or, if you know of any the we have missed please do tell!
Tommy's Wok
Le Coq D'or
Club Jalapeno
L'Escargot
Flying Fish Grill
Grasings
Thanks!

Location. location, location.....I live in the SF bay area I spend about $1200 a month on groceries, cleaning/ paper items, and pet food for: 2 adults, 2 cats and 2 dogs. That includes about 3 trips a week to various stores ie: Whole Foods, upscale grocery and Safeway. I do cook organic as much as possible (and yes that goes for the animals as well). This does not include alcohol or dinners out. Scary.

I'm a Northern California chowhound who is finding it more and more frustrating to have to weed through ALL the San Diego restaurant posts ( a good 85% of the California board) in order to find anything relating to other areas in California...... seriously, San Diego dominates this board discussion. Isn't it time to give it it's own board????

My mother use to make an hors d'ouvre that she served at all her fancy 1960's/70's parties.
It was thinly sliced italian salami smeared with cream cheese and a piece of pickled watermelon rind was placed in the middle of the cream cheese. The salami was rolled up and a toothpick held it together.
It was delicious and I still love them today. The jarred pickled watermelon rind is getting harder to find though.
We also have a thanksgiving family tradition of mashed rutabagas. We boil and mash them, add lots of butter salt and pepper and then a good heaping spoonful of sugar ( it's an Icelandic thing).
My mom also used to make something called a Dixie Surprise cake (ironic cuz we lived in the Bay Area ,CA). I just remember it being this massively ugly white cream frosting cake with Heath bars and a ton of other stuff in it. Boy was it good! I wish I had the recipe for this one!

Thanks for all the replies. I knew I had little recourse but thought it was worth asking. We are NOT looking to SELL food. We are looking to provide, for free, some snacks in the garage area during the day. Think crackers and cheese and soda. This would only supplement the 3 square meals that the hotel will be providing for the 4 days. I just wanted to know if anyone had any experience with contracting with a hotel for meals but bringing snack items in on your own.

We are putting on a 4 day gathering for about 350 car people. We are contracted with a Nevada hotel and part of the contract stipulates that they are to provide all food. Unfortunately, their food is substandard and the prices are ridiculously high (Turkey sandwhich, chips and cookie for $15.00, etc.) I would love to be able to go to the local Costco and buy snacks, cold cuts and veggie trays for 1/4 of the price they are charging us and provide them in the garage where everyone hangs out during the day, but am weary of the possible ramifications. Meanwhile breakfasts, lunches, dinners and drinks for all 4 days will be provided by the various restaurants in the hotel, so they will be making a nice profit off us. We have very limited resources and money is tight.
Any ideas or personal experiences are VERY welcome!

Well, after 8 years of various sweet potato recipes (all of which have been varying degrees of sweet) that have sat untouched at the table I have decided to either completely omit them from next years dinner or try something savory.

Well, after years of thorough research, feedback from others, and much internal anguish, I finally bit the bullet and ordered the Vita Mix 5000 yesterday. I haven't received it yet but I must say I am excited as hell to get it!!!!
The final straw was a craving for a Jamba Juice yesterday. I ordered my usual and as I was waiting I asked the manager what blender they use...Sure enuf: Vita Mix

I've eaten at both far more times than I care to expand on, and hands down I'd have to go with Chili's ( at least here in California).

Well my plum tree is out of control and I have more plums than I know what to do with. Usually the hubby and I just take them into work or we eat them plain, but I would love to get more creative with them. Got any good recipes?????

Oh lord, I am sooo not looking forward to this summer here in Sacto........I plan to be hovering in my freezer chomping on a mudd ice cream pie................

Wow! I have to agree with bulavinka on this and say I have eaten hummus the world over and TJ' s meditteranean is by far one of the best!
Chowhound Post
I am a hummus afficianado and I must say beyond a shadow of a doubt the finest hummus I have ever tasted is the Trader Joes Meditteranean hummus with the pine nuts and oil and herbs on top. Divine!

Thanks for the heads up!

My husband and I are members of a car club who like to get together once or twice every summer and do a scenic dinner drive to an area within an hour away from Sacto (An hour there and and hour back max). We've been to Theresa's in Jackson and it was great. We are looking for another out of the way hidden gem that would be a nice scenic drive away....Placerville, Colfax, Auburn, Sutter Creek, Nevada City, Grass Valley, Apple Hill, Jackson etc........ There usually are anywhere from 10-25 Cobra's on the drive so we would need ample parking. We would of course make reservations ahead of time. Good solid food that isn't wildly expensive would be ideal. Any suggestions?????
