Where to get a mooncake mold around LA/OC area?

Ipse, I did!! I went to Kee Wah and asked them, and they looked at me like I'm crazy.... =/

Where to get a mooncake mold around LA/OC area?

ciaolette, Happy Kitchen is not a kitchen supply store. It's a restaurant. I'm not in a panic mode anymore. I've accept the fact that I'm not making pretty mooncake this year... =( I made my mooncake with musubi mold that I got from Marukai... If someone knows where to get one, I'd still love to get it. But I'm actually looking for the plastic crank one. Not the wooden one. The plastic ones are easier to use. Btw, ciaolette, I use a recipe from this website.

http://www.redcook.net/2008/09/11/making-moon-cake/

It turned out pretty good. Warning, do NOT cook the lotus seed paste for 20 minutes. I burnt my first batch trying to follow direction. Depending on your stove, you may cook it for less time. I cooked mine in 10 minutes.

I've attached my musubi mooncake...!!

xlb restaurants in LAX

Wilafur, I went to Dean Sin for the first time a few weeks ago, ate 50 XLB with my friend, and most of the XLB were broken when served.... =( they're really good when they're intact, but I was quite disappointed when I kept getting broken XLBs. Maybe I came during their off day... =/

Where to get a mooncake mold around LA/OC area?

I need a mooncake mold. I bought one from ebay 3 weeks ago, coming from Hongkong, and it never arrived...!!! Now, I need to find one locally... I'd rather not go to chinatown because traffic and mooncake festival prep will make that place unbearable to get to. Anywhere in SGV is perfect for me. Even I would drive down to OC. Just not chinatown. Can someone point me to the right direction? I tried 99 ranch, Hawaii Market, and a few other smaller chinese grocery stores in SGV, and I can't find anything... I don't want to buy it online. I need it today.

Thanks in advance!!

angel food cake -- bundt pan okay?

but if the OP doesn't have silicone bundt pan, and ends up buying one, might as well buy an angel food cake pan. It's a neat thing to have in your kitchen, especially if you like baking... I kept debating with myself when I bought it whether or not I really need it. But since then (~3 months ago), I've used it 4-5 times. Especially in the summer, angel food cake is GREAT with summer berries. I made a lot of custard this summer, and all the egg whites end up as angel food cake... =)

Planning a SGV food crawl -- recommendations?

How about mexican (tacos), vietnamese (pho, nem nuong)?
For hainan chicken, I also like tasty choice in san gabriel.
For dumplings, I like Dumpling 10053 in El Monte or Kingsburg in San Gabriel.
Also maybe consider Healthy Dessert (Hui lau shan) for some fruit dessert in san gabriel (on valley blvd.)
I hope this helps... =)

Need recommendations in the Netherlands

Hi All,

I'm traveling to the Netherlands in September for 1.5 weeks. I will be mostly at Leeuwarden. Any recommendation on places to eat? FYI, I'm a Chinese Indonesian who has not gone back to Indonesia for years, so some authentic Indonesian food would be nice too to remind me of home.

And I'm a big fan of cheese.

Thanks!

Dee

First time family lunch - Please help!

Hi JBC,

Early dinner sounds like a good idea. I'll bring it up. I've never been to Zov's but I'll look up more reviews on the board. From what you describe, sounds like it can satisfy everybody. In fact, I'll look up reviews on all the recommended places on this thread. Then I'll make reservation asap. Thanks so much, guys.

First time family lunch - Please help!

So,

After dating my bf for 5 1/2 years, his family and my family will finally meet up for the first time. His family lives in Placentia, and mine lives in Lake Forest. We'd consider about anything around OC and maybe part of LA. My dad likes steak, my mom and his grandma are flexible and adventurous. His mom prefer healthy food. His grandpa's picky (chicken, beef, and some pork). We want a place where we can talk, so not too loud. Somewhat a neutral place and nice. We were considering chinese food (sam woo in irvine, newport seafood, or new capital in rowland heights) where we can order some chicken and beef stuff for grandpa, and go crazy on the seafood. We also considered italian (buca di bepo) or steak house, but not sure which one. We're planning it to be this coming Saturday (july 7th). Any suggestion would be highly appreciated...!!!

FYI: his and my family are all chinese

Dinner for UCLA grad and family

Here's an idea. I know you mentioned you want to stay close to campus, but that area will be pretty crazy packed due to graduation. So, in case you're willing to drive a little farther, how about drive out to SGV and have some chinese food? All you need is a few (2-3) big round tables, get a set dinner, and voila... yummy in the tummy... ;-)

I think for such big party, you should check the restaurant to see if you can make a reservation.

Best Hainan Chicken Rice in LA/OC

I like Tasty Choice on San Gabriel and Las Tunas. I used to get it once-twice a week when I lived in San Gabriel. Sometimes when they're not too busy, they let you specify to have dark meat only (I hate white meat). I love their ginger sauce. Does anyone know what's in this sauce? I'm guessing ginger, green onion, and sesame oil.

I also like the Hainan Chicken rice at Banana Bay. It's pretty simple, but it's not paired with any ginger sauce. I haven't been to either places for a while though ever since I moved to Westwood.

Finally! Great soft tacos in South Bay

You know what their hours are? What time do they usually stick around until? Thanks in advance...!!!

Imitation Pinkberry

i tried yogurtland in fullerton a few weeks ago. the yogurt was so so, and the fruits were still frozen!!! I had kiwi and raspberry for topings. I don't think I'd be going back there.

I feel like death, suggestions to lift my soul?

How about some ramen at RamenYa in santa monica? or go to K-Town for some korean tofu. Might be a little spicy though.

Tea w/ Mom

The Tea Rose Garden in Pasadena is a nice place for mother/daughter tea time. When I used to work in Pasadena, I used to have (extended) lunch there all the time. I'm hoping someone can confirm that they're still there. Half of the place is a flower shop, and the other half is a place where you can have tea and sandwiches. My favorite was the Italian Rose sandwich paired with apricot tea. It's nothing elegant, but I think it's a nice cozy little place in case you feel like something different.

Schloss Wallhausen Riesling Kabinett

Awesome...!!! Thank you very much. I will check out those stores and maybe I can also find the wines you recommend... =)

Indonesian Food Bazaar this Easter Sunday

For those of you who likes to go to Duarte Inn for their Indonesian food Bazaar. There will be something similar to that this Sunday at St. Stephen in Monterey Park, CA. It's the Easter Bazaar for Indonesian Catholics. Usually they sell different varieties of authentic Indonesian food. Kinda like their version of Wat Thai. It's scheduled to be from 11am to 6pm. It might end early if they run out of food. It should be located in their parking lot.

Mass starts at 2pm and should last about 1 to 1.5 hours, in case you want to avoid the crowd. I'm not sure if the vendors are opened during mass or if they will be attending the mass.

I hope they have bacang and tempe bacem, I've been craving them… =)

Please help -- Where to go for your favorite CALIFORNIA ROLL?

I was just at California Roll Factory a few days ago. They made my order super fast. I like the roll that's called "Some like em hot". It's spicy tuna roll with some other stuff in it.

How to make salty/salted fish fried rice?

Thank you all... I will try to search for the ingredients at 99 ranch. Keep on posting your comments, I've bookmarked this thread, so eventhough I don't come back daily, I'll keep checking back... =)

My boyfriend does have an outside burner, so we'll be using his... thanks again.

How to make salty/salted fish fried rice?

I'm getting conflicting resposes from the hounds. Yes to salty cod fish? or no to salty cod fish? Sweetie said mackerel, so I should look for salty mackerel?

btw, 99 ranch is a name of a chain of asian market in southern california. Sorry if I was not being specific.

Thanks for the link, RWCFoodie. It says "haam yu" for the fish. I hope the people at the market knows what I'm talking about... =D

I did see one in a jar that my ex's grandma used to use. But unfortunately, that was 5-6 years ago, and I'm not about to call my ex just to ask what it was... Which section/aile of the supermarket should I look for this? It's not frozen, right?

Thanks again for the help and comments so far... Keep them coming.. :D

How to make salty/salted fish fried rice?

any visual image of the package? or do you know the brand of it? Do you know what kind of fish it is?

Things you won't order out, because you pretty much can make them at home ...

Ha ha... I HAVE gone to shinsengumi and foo foo tei, and I DO agree that they serve extremely good ramen. I'm not big on pork slices myself, normally, I order the Asari Ramen at Foo foo tei. I just don't think their price justify the difference with the one I can make at home.

My ramens doesnt include sliced pork, but it does include meat balls (bo vien), bok choy, and an egg slightly cook. I like the egg rather runny, so I crack it into the soup last before I take the ramen out of the stove, and be really carefully not to break the yolk until it's ready to enter my mouth... yum...

How to make salty/salted fish fried rice?

Hi All,

I've had this dish at thai/chinese restaurants, and would like to make it at home. I know how to make the fried rice part, but what do you use for the salty fish? Do they have it at 99 ranch supermarket, which section should I look for it? Thanks in advance.

Where to get good Ciopino around Long Beach area?

Just had lunch with a friend today, and he said his wife's craving good ciopino. Do you know anywhere around Long Beach area that serve really good ones? He said that the places he's been to has been skimp on the seafood. Unfortunately, he did not mention where. Thanks in advance. Would really like to help my friend if I can. =)

I think he wouldnt mind going a little further than Long Beach if it's really good.
