Good Food near Crofton, MD
Living in Bowie, working in Crofton, I'd agree with what most everyone suggested.
Looking for a good stand alone bakery? Try the Cakery in Bowie. Their cakes are
moist, flavorful and amazing. I love their croissants and muffins too. They make the
most wonderful special occasion cakes. The Cakery is off of Rt. 450 W, turn R onto
Race Track Road and they are in the stores behind the shopping center. I really like Allison's on Rt. 450 E, in the same shopping center as the Crofton Lemongrass. Allison's is locally owned, small and they have weekly specials. I like that they have less tables to they can focus on the quality of the food. Allison's is one of my favorites. Also, if you want Mexican
you might want to try Mi Casita. I wouldn't call it fancy, its casual. And popular. Mi Casita is at the intersection of Rt. 450 E and Rt. 424. Also there is a wonderful butcher (free standing) in Annapolis. Its called My Butcher and More. www.mybutcherandmore.com. Mike is the butcher and he is amazing. They have a deli onsite plus they do special orders. My neighbor is from Chicago and loves tritip beef, which she says isn't easily available her. My Butcher and More has special cuts like that.
Look luck exploring and have fun!
PG county dining
Ok, I second the Franklins. They do have great beer and I like their sandwiches, burgers and pizza. No one mentioned anything in Bowie, except KBQ. Excellent BBQ, probably the best in Prince Georges. There is the original Grace's Fortune in Bowie, the best chinese for miles. Better than her second location, and far better than Grace's Mandarian in National Harbor. And yes, you can always count on Jerry's in Lanham. Not too sure yet about the Bowie location. Patsa Plus in Laurel, always consistent. There is Momma Stellas in Clinton, near AAFB. Oh, Regina's Pizza in Temple Hills, near AAFB also. There is T.J. Elliots in Bowie, they have Ledo's pizza and great steaks but average pasta I find. The Old Bowie Town Grill does nice pasta dishes, good salads too. My DH likes their pork chops. My MIL loves the 94th Aero Squadron in College Park, yet I think its seen better days.
Quality French Style Pastry/Tarte in DC
I second the Patisserie Poupon, they are on Wisconsin Ave. NW in Georgetown. You can't beat them.
xmas eve day trip - annapolis/easton/st michaels?
You might want to look into the Chart House in Annapolis (eastport really). We went for Thanksgiving, had a great meal and even better time. Plus you could drive around eastport and the rest of Annapolis and see all the Christmas lights. Oh, and the Chart house looks out at the Annapolis City dock and the Naval Academy. Easy to find on gps too.
Recommendations: Maryland Eastern Shore in Winter
As you drive back from the wedding on the west bound side of Rt. 50 in Stevensville (your last exit before the bridge) there is a great place called Lisa's Small plates. They have a huge variety of small plates (sorta like tapas, easy to share among 2). They do it all well. I have been so pleased with the quality of Small Plates every time I go there. And we will drive from Bowie, across the bridge just to have dinner there.
Jerry's Seafood in Bowie...Anyone been there yet?
Jerry did sell the business with the recipes to a family member. So that is why everyone is seeing such expansion. I live in Bowie and haven't tried the local Jerry's yet. Nor have I spoken with anyone who has been there. As long as they use the original recipes they should be okay.
A lovely radio programme from the UK.
Thanks ever so much for posting. I sent it on to 5 friends after listening. It was delightful and informative.
F-word with Gordon Ramsay
I doubt Food Network in the states would pick up the F Word. It is a delight. Like I said it was shown here on BBCAmerica and they haven't gotten around to the 3rd season. He is more likeable on his own shores. I think FOX butchers him. He is heavily edited to appear the mean guy. And Gordon has passions, especially about food. Speaking of the turkeys being killed, wait until the next season when he has the pigs and takes them to the slaughterhouse himself. In the states they wouldn't show the whole thing, I had to go to youtube to see the episode in its entirety.
Recommendations near Andrews AFB
I grew up right outside of Andrews (my father retired out of the 89th and moved from there 20 yrs ago) and there has never been any place that could work for a group especially a 'fun' place. The area is full chinese places and pizzarias. College Park/Beltsville area wlll be 30-35 minutes north on the beltway. And Bowie is full of a huge variety of places, again 30 minutes north on 301. The closest is the National Harbor. I went 2 weeks ago, found the ramp off of the beltway easy to navigate and parking wasn't an issue. It was easy to find. It was nice to walk around before & after our meal. And it had shopping, not much yet, but still a few stores. Plus, its about 15-20 minutes south of Andrews. Our group had a wonderful meal at Rosa Mexicano. But, we needed reservations, and I recommend them. Clinton for Mama Stellas is also 15-20 minutes south of off Old Branch ave. If this is a military group their are always the clubs on Andrews t o consider.
F-word with Gordon Ramsay
Wasn't that season (series) 2 of the F Word? It was on BBCAmerica about a year or two and i would like season (series) 3 to make it back to BBCAmerica. I really enjoyed it. No, now that I think about it the turkeys were in season (series) 1 of the F Word. In the next season he had the pigs, Trinny & Susannah.
About his personal life, I have been looking at the articles in the Daily Mail and I am trying to keep an open mind. I felt disappointed since he paints himself as such a family man, even openly discussing how difficult it was a first for his wife, Tana to get pregnant. And he frequently shows his family on the F Word. I keep thinking headlines about these celebs (even celebrity chefs) sell newspapers and magazines and like my late Mother used to say, "we don't know what goes on in someone's bedroom." So who knows how much truth there is to all of this.
Recommendations near Andrews AFB
Not far away in Clinton is Mama Stellas. What about going 20 minutes south and checking out the various restaurants in the National Harbor?
Georgetown Advice
I would not go to Paolos, its low quality tourist food I have found. I love Filomena's but call ahead first and speak to a manager (not just a server) maybe they can seat you in the kitchen (a place of honor there). And I second Mie N Yu. Non, food related when making reservations at the spa at Four Seasons make sure you get Joanne. She is my massage therapist and she really knows her stuff, plus she does facials too! Hands of gold she has.
looking for good bbq, annapolis md. area
In Bowie there is KBQ on Rt. 450. They have been reviewed by WaPo and the Washingtonian too. I really like them but then I don't eat pork, just chicken.
Kitchen Nightmares/Sabatiello in Stamford
Did one week with Gordon really make a difference with this owner? Is it still open I wonder? Watching the show now, I think this owner, Sammy, really needs someone to give him a "come to jesus" talk and Gordon is the best person to do that.
christmas day in washington dc
i agree with the advice on trying a hotel. Look at the Four Seasons in Georgetown. Plus, you might want to look at Filomena's on Wisconsin Ave. in Georgetown. The Italian food there is great, reasonably priced and they really do it up for the holidays.
Recs for upscale restaurant between Bowie & Belair
Need to go out next Sunday (11/2) f or a special occasion with BIL and his wife. So there will be 4 of us. We would like someplace upscale but not a place where a jacket and tie are required. We live in Bowie they live in Belair. Any suggestions?
D'Acqua
I went for lunch yesterday and loved it. My friend and I split the two entrees. We had pappardelle with wild mushrooms (meaty tasting mushrooms I might add) and the monkfish wrapped in pancetta with lemon zest & fresh herbs. The pancetta was crispy not greasy and the fish tasted great. Plus we split two desserts: The tiramusu was perfect then we had some pastry filled with ricotta and polenta with orange zest and orange blossom. It was a light flaky pastry, I don't remember the name of the dessert. I would go back there. We also had the antipasto bar, and really could have had just that for lunch it was so much food. I really liked the place.
Need Good Butcher Rec.
I would second the suggestion to My Butcher and More in Crofton. I need to get there this week to pick up some ground lamb. Anyway, the place is clean and a good selection of meats. I really like this place and I am happy its close to my house in Bowie. Plus, they make sandwiches on site.
Ground Lamb in DC?
Does it have to be in DC? There is an amazing butcher in Crofton, Maryland who sells ground/minced lamb. The place it called My Butcher and More and they are in Staples Corner at the interesction of routes 424 and 450.
kerrygold garlic & herb butter -- where can i buy it in nova?
God I love Kerrygold Butter! Its so much sweeter than American butter. And the Kerrygold cheeses are great too. So much more flavor than many American brands.
Cake in suburban MD
If you want just a good cake lead.....then check out The Cakery in Bowie. They are on Rt. 450 behind the Outback. The Cakery has been in business for over 12 years and its a gem! They have had great reviews including one in the WaPo. Everything is made on premises. They did our wedding cakes 9 years ago and we had a Hawaiian Luau for our reception and when we met with 1 owner we told her "We want 4 cakes, any size or shape and do what you want. Any flavor too. Surprise us. " So a week later the other owner (the chef) called and asked to meet with us, we met with him and told him the same. He wanted to be sure that we wanted to leave the cakes in their hands since this was our wedding. And we were surprised and happy. They made the most amazing cakes that fit in our Hawaiian themed reception. One cake was banana flavored with a chocolate ganache filling and then had coconut all over it. We still have friends who went to our reception and talk about the cakes, 9 years later!
Alex James (Blur) is making cheese
Maybe he is feeling remorse for the million pounds he spent on coke and champagne. I am sure the trip he took to Columbia made him appreciate his life and his farm now. He did give his cheese to the President of Columbia to try!
Sunday Brunch in PG County?
In Northern Pr. Geo. I can suggest Chevys in Greenbelt or in Bowie I WOULD NOT go to Rips. I went around labor day and it was dull. Fine for grandparents or people without taste. Bob Evans on Rt. 301 in Bowie, Grace's Fortune on Rt. 450 (the original) or the Old Bowie Town Grill. Sounds like you may be in the southern part of the county, what about any of the new places at National Harbor? I think Grace's will open there in October. And the McCormick and Schmicks is open, they might have brunch.
"The Restaurant". Who next to be out?
"The Restaurant" isn't here yet, and no word if BBCAmerica will pick up series 2. And yes, they renamed it "Last Restaurant Standing" because of Rocco DeSpirito former show, "The Restaurant." I do hope BBCA picks the second series up, it was delight to watch and see what really goes on behind the scenes and how to set up a proper restaurant. Plus, I loved the guy who opened the door with headphones on. He would call the couples in the board room to await their judgement. I wonder if that hottie is back for series two?
huntingtown, prince frederick maryland
Another good place is Mama Lucias. About 2 years ago they opened one up in P.F. on Rt. 4 south, plus the original in Dunkirk also on Rt. 4 South. So I hope this info isn't too late for you. Try Mama Lucias.
Anybody been to Old Bowie Town Grille?
I find the Old Bowie Town Grille okay also. I like most of the starters and desserts. The salads are good too. But the entrees seem to have bit of a creole twist that I don't care for. And you can't go wrong with their beers. I would avoid Friday and Saturday nights, I think they bring in live music. I think of it as a locals place. I have not been there for lunch, are they even open for lunch? The area of Old Bowie is still in need of good locally owned restaurants, not chains. I have been there for St. Patricks day and it is a lot of fun.
Japanese favs around Greenbelt,Landover,Bowie
You might be referring to Osaka in Greenbelt and its still there. Went to a first date with my husband there 11 years ago. In Prince Georges there are more and more places to choose from like East Moon in Bowie. East Moon is getting pretty good reviews too.
Staying in New Carollton for Redskins
I second that. There isn't any place in New Carrollton thats decent to eat. I would just take Rt. 450 to Rt. 564 and go to Jerry's. Excellent seafood, and "the Crab Bomb" is it. The thing about Jerry's is they don't use any filler, just fresh back fin blue crab meat, some Old Bay and either lemon juice or a little mayo. Nothing else, no bread crumbs, no cracker crumbs, no onion or green peppers. Just good chunks of crab meat. High quality. You will have to wait, they do not take reservations. But if you enjoy seafood, especially crab, Jerry's is your place.
Bastille Day at the Embassy of France
I used to work in G'town and 2 of my former co-workers were French. This even was the highlight of the year for them. They always made it sound so incredible. So I would go, with so many amazing restaurants represented you can't go wrong. And Patisserie Poupon has the most authentic croissants around, plus their pasteries are outstanding.
Go. Enjoy!
