St. Louis Recommendations - Washington Univ

Greetings from California,

A family friend will be moving to STL from Seattle in August to attend Washington U. She has sophisticated tastes for someone her age (23) and she will be on a student's income.

Recommended by someone from STL but not a gourmand, I bought gift certificates to Imo's and Ted Drewe's. I want to give her a gift certificate to a restaurant or two that aren't too expensive, are close to WU or somewhere else she must see with good, interesting food where a student could get a meal for $15 - 20 or so. She likes all kinds of food.

Please recommend or refer to a previous link.

Many thanks!

Need view of ocean

Sorry for the very delayed reply to Mom's birthday dinner. Siblings thought Crab Landing was the ticket. The view was nice and the family was there. That accomplished Mom's original request. Unfortunately the food was marginal (not bad but definitely not good) and the prices matched Sutro which I thought we were trying to avoid. So for the money we could have gone to Sutro darn it!

Thanks for the suggestions and I'm so so sorry I couldn't take advantage.

Need view of ocean

Here's the latest, bay would be okay with Mom. Today she asked about Spenger's and Spinnaker so it's "water" she's hoping for. She didn't realize Spengers didn't come with a view. So those of you with BAY ideas, please throw them out there (or here rather).

Thank you all, great suggestions!

Need view of ocean

I had checked Sutro's on Open Table and nothing was available. Following your suggestion I went back and checked again thinking I should call them. I also checked their menu. I didn't think money was that much of an issue with my original post but just learned my brother's wife was laid off making Sutro's too expensive.

How about entrees in the lower $20s, salads and appetizers $7-10 . . . and of course that view!

Need view of ocean

My mother is turning 80 in February. When asked how she would like to celebrate she requested 'dinner with her family and a view of the ocean'. Where can you find a good view with a good dinner? I've been checking out Half Moon Bay. There is little mention of Crab Landing, has anyone been there? I've also heard Sam's Chowder House has a good view but can't find any info to encourage the food. How about Sutro at the Cliff House? The family means 9 people so we don't need any huge space.

Maybe we could have a drink at the Cliff House then go somewhere else to eat. I'll appreciate any help I can get. Thanks!

Pasadena Recommendations

I spent some hours last weekend reviewing previous posts for restaurants in Pasadena. I copied many entries and when I went to save, I lost everything. I no longer have time to start over. I'm looking for a restaurant for Saturday night. I'm flying down with a friend to meet her daughter at college and we will spend Saturday in Pasadena (museum, shopping, etc.)

Can you recommend somewhere with great food, semi-casual, mid-price range ($40 - 60 each with salad, entree, wine) and fun. We're doing tapas on Friday so something different and please rule out Chinese.

Thanks!

Oakland Ambience

You were right, I don't regret the meal at Jojo! The ambience was just what I was looking for although my husband would have preferred something a little more casual. We had grilled shrimp and halibut - my shrimp dish was tastier than his halibut but he got to eat plenty of both. I also had the pate appetizer which I really enjoyed and we ordered the special pear cake for dessert which was killer!

Thanks!

Oakland Ambience

I'm planning to take my husband out on Saturday one weekend soon. From previous posts I've narrowed down the options to Jojo, Eccolo, Downtown (I want to go someplace new). We don't dine out often because his cooking is so darn good at home so when we go out, we want it just right. He's not into restaurants with too much attitude or places that seem stuffy. Can someone help with the ambience factor, I'm looking for something like Wood Tavern? Thanks!

Looking for casual restaurants in small (?) towns in Austria.

We are cycling at the end of this month from Salzburg to Gosau to Hallstatt to Wolfgangsee to Traunsee to St. Georgen then back to Salzburg. I've collected posts on restaurants in Salzburg. We'll eat lunch along the route and dinner in the towns mentioned. Does anyone have recommendations for moderately priced, casual restaurants with GREAT food for any of these other places? We'd enjoy traditional Austrian cuisine and other types of food as well.

Many thanks!

Dining alone near JW Marriott

I've been searching but can't find this particular topic. I will be in DC and have one or two nights unscheduled, probably on Friday and Saturday. I'm looking for places near the JW Marriott (I've made notes from previous posts about other locations that are not nearby). I like seafood, French food, diner food, local food (no Asian or spicy this time). I would prefer to pay no more than $60 out the door for a salad, an entree and a glass of wine. Where are some good spots if dining alone and not feeling social?
