Another food crawl planning help request

Thanks again for all of your suggestions. Some great ideas for a future crawl.

Tonight we went with a modified Union Square crawl.

We started at Sarma as soon as they opened at 5:30
Outstanding service but too long between dishes especially since we were among the first customers well before it got very busy.
Lamb sliders, pineapple glazed beef and chickpea crepe. All outstanding.

Next Casa B for Chorizo Al Jerez, Bunuelos and gnocchi de Yuca. The first two excellent, the gnocci the only dud of the night for us. Once again wonderful service and a much better wait between dishes.

Machu Picchu for Lomo Saltado was next. Reasonable service. I don't speak Spanish but it seems the name might have been a tipoff that the dish was too salty for our tastes. That and we were pretty full by this point made it difficult to enjoy this dish as much as we might have otherwise.

On the short list, none of which we got to this time, was A-4, Dosas n' Curry and RF O'Sullivans

We finished the night at Gracie's. Don't know what flavor my son picked. I tried the Salty Whiskey but decided against.

All in all a fun night with excellent food. Great walking around weather and people watching. Nice variety of music at the restaurants as well.

Thank you to everyone who contributed a comment/suggestion.

Another food crawl planning help request

My now 18 year old son is heading off to college mid August and has suggested he might be able to tolerate me enough to do another food crawl before he starts college.

We've done Allston, Jamaica Plain and West Roxbury.

I'm thinking Medford Center: Bob's, Tenoch, Chilli Garde, ???

or Union Square, Somerville: Machu Chicken, Casa B, Bronwyn, ??? (would love to fit Neighborhood and Union Square Donuts in somehow)

I've appreciated the suggestions from past postings.

Any ideas welcome.

Fantasy Question for Boston Old Timers

Since we are walking down memory lane can anybody help me with the steak place on Mass Ave, Boston a block off Newbury heading towards the river?

And the hot dog place on Beacon Hill across from the State government building?

This area has had so many great restaurants over the years!
Fine dining and otherwise.

Thank you OC for starting the thread.

Fantasy Question for Boston Old Timers

In the spirit of kimfair1's response, places that I frequented the most "back in the day":

Jake and Earls, Inman Square
Elsies, Harvard Square
El Phoenix, Brighton

and, though not for food,
Jonathan Swifts, Harvard Square
the Rat, Kenmore Square (though I could have included the Hoodoo BBQ)

graduation gift card suggestion

Passing along a question posed by my wife...

I want to make a reservation (and pay for) son and girlfriend to go out to dinner as one of his graduation presents.
What would be a restaurant that they would like in Boston (that takes reservations) and not necessarily one for you? i.e. for young people not old!
I would like pretty upscale with good food that he/they would like--italian, steaks. Obviously, not a big drinking place.

I've considered Coppa, Blue Dragon, Oleana but perhaps some of you have a better suggestion since I am old!

Seeking Kitchen Space for Small Scale Bakery

I don't know what the rules are on using Chowhound to transact business, but I may have a deal for you if we can talk/correspond directly. I have a business/kitchen that could use a baker especially in our off hours.

Is there a way we can deal direct and not through this thread?

Davis Square

We ended up eating at Johnny D's in the bar area, all the main room tables were reserved. The place was packed so service was slow but not ridiculously slow.
I had the Jambalaya which was ok but a little boring. The dish seemed to be meat, rice and a brown sauce of some kind. It didn't seem like there was any onion, peppers or celery that I noticed. That would have helped as well as some bolder spices.
My vegetarian friend had the Grilled Vegetable Plate which he said was very good. Both of us enjoyed our beers and Johnny A's performance which was amazing.

Davis Square

Going to Johnny D's for an early show Friday night with a vegetarian.

What are the best options for either a pre show quick meal coming from work or a more leisurely after show dinner?

Beer should be part of the considerations.

Thanks for your suggestions.

Pre Pornographers dinner/drinks

In terms of the Boston CH board, I think you need to start thinking about the stomach and not a few inches lower on the body...

For what it's worth, at the suggestion of the veggie lover in the group, we ended up at Boston Beer Works and had a serviceable if not noteworthy meal. The beer was pretty good.

How come no love here for the Local or the Cherry Tree both in West Newton?
Or, for more upscale, Lumiere (though only open until 10, I believe)?

Seeking input on outdoor Puerto Rican pig roast facility under development [Holyoke, MA]

Awesome idea

Ditto all the comments regarding location and concept

Have you considered some kind of partnership with any of the local farms closer to Boston such as in the Concord, MA area?

one night in June

Since my one night in DC is coming up this weekend I thought I bump this thread up to see if anyone has anything new to add.

Thanks again for your helpful ideas.

Allston dinner crawl tonight?

To be honest everything was very good.
I especially liked the chicken banh mi at Pho Viet and the fish taco at Lone Star.
My son's favorites were a beef banh mi and the tofu soup at Kaju Tofu House.

I think we caught a break on the timing. The rainy night may have scared away some people. Even though it was Saturday night we found parking on Comm Ave pretty easily and the waits for tables wasn't bad. I think Allstonian is right about the impact of the kids being away.

Allston dinner crawl tonight?

Thanks for your suggestions.

Ended up with
1. Individual Banh mi at Pho Viet
2. Split tofu soup and Bib im bap at Kaju Tofu House
3. Individual tacos at Lone Star
4. Split Chicken Schwarma pita wrap and individual falafel at Garlic and Lemon

Lots of fun, tasty food at every stop, nice walks between stops, a little rainy but not too bad,

Allston dinner crawl tonight?

Adventurous 17 year old son and I looking for ideas for a dinner crawl in Allston tonight I'm thinking book ending tacos at Lone Star and Banh Mai at whatever the food court near Shaws is called. Thoughts for in between? Korean perhaps?

one night in June

Thanks for the suggestions.

I've done a cursory look at this site and seen a few things that look interesting

Oohhs & Aahhs sounds unique but is only open til 7 on Sundays. May be an issue.

Little Serow closed on Sundays

Thai Xing, Veggie only on Sundays, promising but I admit a fondness for meat.

Jaleo looks really good as well Probably the current front runner.

one night in June

I'm pretty much an omnivore.

If there's any cuisine that's particularly native to the area that would be good (Is it too early for soft shell crabs?)

Since I'll be dining solo I think I'd prefer to avoid the finer dining options (I won't be packing "nice" clothes) though price isn't necessarily a deterrent

I don't know DC that well so don't want to spend my one night traveling too much but I'm open to walking, cabbing, metro if that's what makes the most sense

one night in June

I'll be visiting DC to drop my son off at a DC college summer program and I'll have one night on my own. Sunday, June 15, 2014 flying out Monday morning.

Staying at the Homewood Suites by Hilton Washington, DC

Where should I eat?

What should I do with my one night in DC?

I will not have a car so that will probably limit my options.

Appreciate your suggestions

Large rotisserie rental for 150 pound whole pig?

Have you tried the BBQ barn in Arlington?

Very good people in my experience.

If they don't rent they might suggest a source.

17 year old birthday celebration

Thanks for your suggestions.

My son is reasonably adventurous. He likes the idea of a healthy diet.

He's been overseas to Costa Rica, Turkey and Italy and managed to eat reasonably well while there.

He enjoys Indian and Chinese food but left to his own devices he's pretty much a pizza, meat and potatoes kind of guy. He's a teenage boy after all.

My wife came up with Tango in Arlington as a strong possibility.

I have also had the pleasure of trying Josh's charcuterie and can confirm that the man is an artist and seems to care very deeply about producing very high quality product. Waltham is lucky to have him and I wish him the best of success. A great addition to Moody St.

Need a caterer for a graduation party, but don't want leftovers

I "do this for a living" but my comments, I think, apply to any caterer or catered event.

If leftovers are an issue you can always ask the caterer to provide "to go" containers and send your guests home with a care package.

BBQ leftovers can easily be frozen for future use.

I agree with most of the posters about how you really don't want to come up short on the amount of food available.

If its a budget concern, most caterers will gladly work with you to come up with a reasonably priced menu that fits your needs
