Providence Meat & Wine

Spiritus Fermenti on Meeting St off of thayer is a pretty good liquor store. But it's even smaller than Campus. And they specialize mostly in beer, but do have a decent wine selection. Gasbarros is pretty good as is Haxton's in Warwick.

Meat markets are another story all together. You're not going to find too much artisinal stuff here in RI, I hate to say. I do recommend hitting the Farmer's Market in Lippet Park on saturday mornings (down hope st on the Prov pawtucket line) There are some meat producers there and they may be able to help you in your search for more interesting sausages.

I personally go to Armando's in Pawtucket for my meat needs. The meat is geared more for the latino market, but they are reasonably priced and very nice.

Also there's a new gourmet shop downtown somewhere but the name escapes me.

Otherwise I see a day trip to Boston in your future. Specifically Savenors.

Otherwise good luck in your quest....

Seattle - Looking for a decent meat vendor anywhere from the International District to Downtown to Belltown for Thanksgiving

Hi,

Here's the deal. I know this is way early but, I'm coming in from the East Coast to cook a Thanksgiving dinner for some friends in Seattle, who are also coming in from out of town.

I need a butcher or meat vendor of some sort where i can order a FRESH (preferably) SMALL turkey like 10 lbs ideally 12 lbs tops for pick up that TUESDAY or WEDNESDAY before Thanksgiving.

It doesn't need to be organic or free range or anything like that. I am aware that there are meat vendors/butchers in Pike's Place market and I know that there are various grocery stores around the downtown area. I'm trying not to break the bank on turkey, though. I'd prefer to not get a frozen one, if possible. But if I need to, it could be done. Really prefer fresh though. Any assistance will be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

FALL TRIP TOP TIPS ?

Upstairs on the Square is good, especially for that photogenic feel as it is in the heart of Harvard Sqaure. I personally prefer Eastern Standard which in Kenmore Square going towards Fenway. For a burger definitely hit Mr. Bartley's Burger Cottage in Harvard Square. There are tons of good places in the city, but the ones that are pretty can be pretentious and the ones that aren't pretentious aren't necessarily pretty. My favorite "diner" was Zoe's halfway between Central and Harvard Square in Cambridge. But it doesn't much look like a diner. However if you want the diner to look like a diner, go to Rosebud in Davis Square in Somerville (on the Redline). There are lots and lots of fine dining options in the South End; The Butcher Shop, Hammersley's Bistro, Addis Red Sea, Metropolis Cafe, I could go on and on. Avoid Newbury St, unless you need to be seen or spend $17 on a salad.

If you're driving up to Portland, ME, I recommend, HIGHLY, stopping at the Friendly Toast in Portsmouth, NH. They make all their own bread and the food is absolutely divine. Go for breakfast or lunch, there will be a wait on the weekend though. Enjoy your trip and have fun.

portsmouth dining advice?

Definitely agree with you on the Friendly toast. They have this sandwich with pickles and cheese and tomatoes. Oh my god is it to die for. My friend make me make it for them at home now.

Breakfast in Providence

Though not technically in Providence, The Modern Diner on East St. in Pawtucket, just past Shea High School is very good. Especially on the weekend. Loui's Diner on I think Brooks St, going towards Wickenden is pretty good as well. If you want a truly memorable experience then go to Julian's on Broadway. MMMM good. there are also a fair amount of spots on Wickenden too, but I haven't been to most of them as the crowd seems a little to "Brown" (as in the university) for my liking.

Best Duck dishes in the Boston area?

are they still doing duck 3 ways at rendezvous in central square? that was yummy.

Florence - Please Help with Lunch and Dinner

I went to Florence last year and Il Latini was by far the best dinner I had my entire trip. Definitely worth the wait and the noise. While you wait servers come out and hand you glasses of wine and cheese and little bits of prosciutto. if you're looking for a snack before dinner I also recommend Procacci on Via Tornabuoni. they specialize in these truffle butter sandwiches and have a pretty reasonable wine list.

For lunch I can't remember the anme, but I went there after the Uffizi gallery. This little hole in the wall enoteceria that had this great paella and cheap wine. it was going more towards the church with the leather working school in it that towards the duomo, if that makes sense. good luck, and have a great time.
