Coming to Chicago for the labor day jazz fest. When we came for same in 2008, my chowhound board research and your replies to my post suggested the following restaurants (among others) within close walking distance of our hotel.
Atwood Cafe, Trattoria 10, Rhapsody, Park Grill, The Gage, Russian Tea time
We had dinner at Atwood and Park Grill in 2008. Both excellent overall experiences. Slight preference for the Park Grill. Although we're comfortable with the option of re-visiting those restaurants, I'm wondering what you'd recommend from the list found above or additional suggestions in the event we'd like to try some different restaurants. We'll be in town for 3 dinners. Lunches will be informal or grab and go. I've read many recs for Pizzano's nearby, so we'll keep that in mind if we're in the mood for a pizza lunch or late night snack. I'd also appreciate your tips for best Chicago dog and italian beef if available in our vicinity. Due to our busy schedule, please limit your suggestions to close proximity of hotel/art institute/jazz fest. As to preferred price point for dinner for 2, I'd say approximately $120-$150 including 2 drinks each (or bottle of wine) and tip (if that's possible). We're open to many different cuisines, although we're not interested in expensive fine dining options. Contemporary American with good seafood choices tends to work well for us, but no need to limit your suggestions to that style. Lastly, I enjoy excellent micro/craft beers, so restaurant or pub suggestions with selections beyond the typical Bud/Miller/Heineken fare will be appreciated. Above average wine by the glass list, not too over-priced, also a plus. Thanks!
trip to Italy
traveling to Milan (1 night), Cernobbio (2 nights) and Lake Como area, Verona (1 night) and Venice (3 nights) during the first week in August. looking for suggestions for reasonably-priced, regional cuisine for lunches and dinners. will also be interested in wine choices, particularly red. we won't have a car. thanks for any tips you have for us.

lunch in or near La Crosse WI
My family of 5 (3 teenagers) will be traveling from St. Paul to Viroqua WI next week. Our timetable puts us in LaCrosse for lunch on our way down, and likely again on our return. Would like healthy soup and sandwich type options. Home cookin' family restaurant/diner, hamburger/malt, or any other suggestion might work. Avoid fancy or expensive given the kids. Sit down/table service preferred. We wouldn't have to eat in LaCrosse if there are options you particularly like in the surrounding area. Any suggestions appreciated. I really don't want to resort to Subway! :) Thanks.
La Crosse WI Trip for Octoberfest
This is not necessarily related to the original post, but I couldn't figure out how to begin a new topic. At any rate, hoping that someone with LaCrosse knowledge will weigh in. Driving from MPLS to Veroqua, WI on Thursday, 10/16. Our timing will put us in need of lunch in LaCrosse or thereabouts. We have 3 teenagers. Looking for healthy soup/sandwich type spot or general good home cookin', maybe a diner or burger/malt place might work. Nothin' fancy or expensive given the kids, but please save us from Subway and the like. Thoughts?

Thanks Chicago hounds for some great rec's. We are just back from a weekend in the windy city. We requested rec's near the Palmer House Hilton. We had dinners at The Atwood cafe and the Park Grill. Both were excellent. Service and atmosphere were a toss up. but I thought the Park Grill edged out the Atwood when it came to the food.

staying at palmer house on upcoming weekend. eve's we'll be at green mill for jazz. hounds have suggested marigold and silver seafood near green mill........ atwood cafe, trattoria 10, russian tea time, the gage, cuatro, park grill, exchequer near hotel. after looking at websites, so far, i'm thinking atwood for one of the dinners. what do you like for 2nd dinner choice? how about lunch? custom house seems a little expensive for our budget (roughly $50 pp for dinner). thanks.

Thanks to all you NYC hounds who helped us find some excellent dining options on our recent visit. Here are some of our impressions.
Marseille: excellent food. went twice, one dinner, one late night snack. especially enjoyed the soup (pistou) and Leffe brown beer on tap. scallops and short ribs were good choices.
worst service of the trip, however, when we were asked if we would like to see desert menus before our entree order was taken.
Cafe Zabarsky: enjoyed our lunch before met museum. killer deserts, as promised.
Park Ave Bistro: dinner. very nice setting, service and food.
Met museum basement cafeteria: lunch while visiting museum. hated the crowded basement setting and the disorganized method of ordering and paying for food. however, the food was better than average, and the prices were fairly reasonable. If you don't need to go here, I'd recommend heading to cafe zabarsky just up the street for a much more pleasant experience.
West bank cafe: dinner. this was my favorite. food, ambience, wine and service all top notch. don't miss the scallops or the butterscotch toffee parfait!
Burger Shoppe: lunch before ferry. solid burger/beer. nothing great, but nice setting upstairs with table service. hop obama beer on tap was excellent. just right for our purposes.
Josephine's: dinner before met opera. i'd rank this a step down from marseille, w. bank cafe and park ave bistro, but it wasn't bad. bustling setting and service were fine. taste of food wasn't anything special. i had a goat cheese ravioli special that didn't really work. overall, however, this was a solid rec for our budget and evening plans.
Sangam: lunch. i'm not knowledgible as regards indian food, but this little storefront had gotten a rave review on chowhound, so we gave it a try. excellent prices, small menu. a few tables. excellent service/nice owners. salad was great with lots of very fresh chopped veggies (only $3). chix biryani was fine, but didn't knock me out. But, again, I'm not qualified to compare it to other indian restaurant experiences.
Alta: dinner. Fun, loud date night atmosphere. service was solid. food was above average, but didn't wow me. however, don't miss the brussel sprouts. spinach salad was 2nd best thing we ordered.
Kee's chocolate: expensive at $2 per, but the pistachio was pretty darn tasty.
La Bonne Soupe: very nice lunch spot. busy. quiche, soup and salad.
Pam's real Thai: enjoyed the food. shrimp pad thai was our favorite dish.
Uncle nick's: lunch. excellent greek food. do not miss the chicken soup or greek salad. lamb kabob and shrimp kabob were also very good.

thanks hounds! took a look at the menus of silver's seafood and marigold, and i think we would very much enjoy both of those suggestions. they are located near the green mill, correct? closer to the hotel, the recommended chowhound posts suggest atwood cafe as one good choice. agreed? also, does pizanos offer pizza by the slice? do you know how late they're open on Fri and Sat eves? What restaurants other than Atwood cafe would you recommend for lunch or dinner near our hotel? also, do you like the restaurant located in the hotel? thanks.

will be visiting the first weekend in May to hear some great jazz. staying @ palmer house hilton. what do you recommend within walking distance? budget roughly $15 pp lunch, $50 pp dinner. would like wine/beer option with dinner. we're open to a wide variety of cuisines, except very spicy or highly unusual/exotic. one of the jazz clubs we'll be frequenting is the green mill, so if you particularly like some dinner options near that club, please suggest as well. for breakfast, we'd be happy with grab and sit option with tea, pastry, cereal, juice, bagel, etc. no desire for bacon and eggs or anything too heavy. also, may need late night option near hotel after clubs close. pizza, burger, hot dog, sandwich or something like that. thanks!
dinner near Birdland or Iridium
going to 5:15 set at Birdland and 8:30 set at Iridium Friday night and would like to have 6:45 dinner in between. budget $50 pp before tax and tip. restaurant should take reservations and serve wine. so far on this trip we've been to Marseille, West Bank cafe, Park Ave Bistro and Josephina's, We've been pleased with all of those Chowhound rec's. My personal fave so far has been West Bank cafe. Alta tonight. Thanks!

can you recommend a lunch spot within walking distance of Met Museum? We went to Cafe Zabarsky yesterday, which we enjoyed, but would rather not repeat that experience. We'd love a fairly efficient place that might get us in and out in 45 min or so. budget: roughly $15 pp before tax and tip.

Thanks everyone, for pointing out the best of the not much good (as suspected). As it turns out, we have an early dinner res in Manhattan (Sunday), so we'll hopefully snack our way toward that and skip the airport lunch altogether.

any recommendations within walking distance of jazz standard? we'll need to dine early, maybe 5:30 to make it to the jazz club by 7pm. alternatively, we could eat near our hotel and then travel to the club. we're staying on 46th near 9th av. our budget is roughly $50 pp... recommended restaurant should serve beer/wine. Pleasant, date night atmosphere preferred, but not required. Open to many types of food, except very spicy or strange/exotic/unusual.

Due to the timing issues of our upcoming visit, it appears we'll need to grab some lunch at the airport. I know that such places are not known for their cuisine, but are you aware of some options that are better than others? I'll be drinking a few brews on my upcoming visit, and I'm wondering if I should be aware of any local or regional brands that you consider to be excellent. I prefer ale to lager. I especially like a medium dark ale, such as Newcastle Brown, but a nice pale ale is also of interest. I can always fall back on Bass, Guiness, etc, but are there east coast brands you'd like to recommend?
