Basic Pancakes

Just made these without the vanilla and topped with a blueberry compote.

cant... breathe....

I halved the recipe... they were good but they weren't what I would describe as fluffy.

Love K-Town---Recommendations for new places?

I'm gonna throw in an objection here....

Seoul Garden is anything but "pretty lousy" - I find the Soondubu to be TOPS out of any soondubu I have ever had in the city, flushing, seoul and bergen county. So Kong Dong in Ft. Lee is my #2 favorite but I agree things have slipped a notch, although the cucumber pachan remains glorious.

To anyone who has not had soondubu, or has been disappointed in the past, give Seoul Garden a chance........ I agree with johnnyappleseed - it's addictive, especially if you get it spicy.

The search for great FISH TACOS continues...please help!

TACO TACO
2nd Avenue between 89th and 90th
"Baja Style Fish Tacos"
EXACTLY AS YOU DESCRIBED - except for the tortillas - Ask them for corn. They will sub it out for you.
So delicious I commute all the way from Hoboken to eat them.

SEOUL GARDEN.
32nd Street just East of Broadway, on the south side of the street - 2nd floor.
Best Soondubu I have had int the city hands down. I get the #50 - spicy. The pachan are very fresh as well. I much prefer the soondubu here to Cho Dang Gol.

Ivo and Lulu with a group?

Maybe this will explain the recent let-downs.... I went to Ivo & Lulu a month ago with a couple friends to see what all the hoopla was about and who this "Sebastian" fellow was that all the reviews on Menupages and my friends had talked about. The place was cute, candle-lit, tiny, and one guy was taking good care of us. I asked him if he was Sebastian and he explained that no, he wasn't... that Sebastian & Co had left. It was this new guy and his wife was in the kitchen. He said Sebastian had taught him everything they know and now it is all in their hands. Aye... too bad.

Bopkas and black and white cookies

Glaser's Bake Shop on 1st Avenue btwn 87th and 88th has great black and white cookies, among other desserts... The store has been there over 100 years, so it is quite cool to check out.

Table for one in Midtown

I think a great option pricewise with great quality of food is Houston's. Yes, it is a chain, and I'm normally blah about chains, but Houston's has great American dishes. I can't help but like it. You can eat from the full menu at the big bar.... yum!

3rd Ave at E 53rd street.

Visited the new downtown Saigon Grill last night

That sucks... in general I have to say that customer service is not what Saigon Grill is about. In general, it is order, eat, pay and leave. And I like it that way... I have never been asked once how my meal is. You've got to wave them down if you need something and they will help you out right away. Give it another chance if you can stomach it in a couple of weeks... they've got to get their legs, you know? Also do some research about what to order because with such an expansive menu, some things are bound to be hit-or-miss, like vegetable curry. But when they hit, the food is outstanding and worthy of many many return trips.

Friends Visting - Ideas for somewhere near Union Sq.

Saigon Grill, no question. University Place at 12th street (I think)... Get the number 82 and put some sweet chili on it. And get a summer roll. CHEAP, LOTS OF FOOD, FUN and word on the street is that the decor is awesome.

Visited the new downtown Saigon Grill last night

After having lunch today at Saigon Grill on the UWS (got my staple: the L16 with shrimp a.k.a. the number 82 at dinnertime - with lots of chili sauce) I found myself in the union square area.... curiosity took me past Saigon Grill on University Place and my heart leapt at the sight of flags and activity in front of the restaurant at last! So excited to hear they are doing swanky decor... Can't wait to introduce my downtown friends to my addiction! You're so right, it IS a way of life... The empire is growing!

places to take a vegan

I am partial to the upper east side for a couple reasons:
1. much less crowded... although make reservations for prime time weekend seating.
2. less scene-y than downtown.
3. Better service.
4. While this location is moderately less stunning in its decor, on a nice day you can sit near these open doors that face 3rd avenue. Great for a late afternoon lazy lunch with a fresh juice.
5. chakra rolls. I think these are only on the menu at the gobo on the upper east. They are these raw vegetable rolls stuffed with cabbage, topped with salad and sprouts in an almond sauce. Hard to describe, subtle in flavor but crunchy, healthy and different!

The only reasons to go to the west village is for the scene if you're into that... Cool lamps suspended over the center tables... great decor, convenient location.

So yes, upper east is my preference but you can't go wrong with either overall!

As for desserts, they change seasonally. I had an interesting poached pear with a hollowed out center filled with chocolate ganache recently. My vegan sister in law has dreams about the chocolate cake. In all honesty, I find myself missing the sugar, butter, cream and refined flour. I say skip the dessert and get a juice to start - a little tip: Get 1 juice to split between 2 people. If you drink a whole juice yourself you'll have little appetite to gorge on the seitan. Better yet, go get gelato at Otto afterwards!

by "yum" I mean Gobo is one of my favorite restaurants in new york city.
Favorite dishes: Tender Sliced seitan in ginger marinade, vegetable and pine nut lettuce wraps, roti canai, beet salad with string beans, pecans and mustard dressing, spinach dumplings, beijing style smoked seitan and yam & yucca fries. I take meat eaters all the time and they all get obsessed.

Dinner on Restaurant Row?

I'm sorry to hear about your recent disappointment with Becco. As for noise level, lately I've been preferring the 2nd floor... I've found it is a lot quieter. Unfortunately, I think Lidia Bastianich has been sadly distracted by the insanity that is Del Posto. My last experience at Felidia's left a lot to be desired. Lidia get back in the kitchen PLEASE!

Craving sweet potato fries

Blue Smoke has some sinister sweet potato fries... but you should know that they are in spear form. Delicious, deep-fried, with a creme fraiche/maple syrup dipping sauce. Look out!

Taco Taco (2nd Ave btwn 89th and 90th)

Can I just sing the praises of Taco Taco on the Upper East side for a moment? Just got home from a delicious dinner!

Margaritas on the rocks with salt mixed with chili powder.
Roasted corn - buttered, served with chili powder and tinga cheese.
Zuchinni blossoms wrapped in crepes in a poblano sauce with cheese on top.
Baja style fried fish tacos with pico de gallo, lettuce, avocado and a creamy jalapeno sauce and creamy bacon sauce on the side.
Cocount shrimp with a spritz of lime over baby spinach.
Brisket tacos.

Not to mention candle-lit tables, white christmas lights, slow tango music and wonderful service!

Be still my beating heart. I moved from the upper east side a couple of months ago and it hurts my soul to be so far from this gem. Great for Sunday brunch too!

I never would have gone to this place if it wasn't for the Chowhound book! Lucky me and all my friends I have taken there!

Snack/Lunch options near Union Sq

Of all the salad places in New York City, one has risen to the top and is a real standout in my opinion in terms of ingredient quality and overall addictiveness - and that is Chop't. 17th street between 5th and Union Square East. Easily under $15, and portable to the benches of Union Square, this is a top destination for me when I'm in the area.

Other standouts that are cheap and tasty?
Medina on 17th between 5th and Union Square East. Wonderous soups. Good sandwiches.

Souen on 13th between 5th and University - for health food when you need to detox.

Six & Twelve on 12th Street @ 6th Avenue - Korean owned - Top notch western soups and sandwiches with killer korean style dumplings and bento box.

Is Nobu worth it for non-fish eaters?

On the vegetable end of the spectrum, you can order tempura a la carte which is good but not otherworldly outstanding. It can flesh out the meal a little bit though. Nobu also does a good cold soba dish that (I believe) does not have seafood in it.

ISO -- UES Coffee Shops

DTUT (stands for downtown uptown) on 2nd Avenue between 84th and 85th...
Definitely a writer's paradise... an exposed brick, sofa filled neighborhood coffee shop with free internet. Very laptop friendly. Good food selection. Hard to believe it is on the upper east. I think it is exactly what you are looking for... Enjoy!

Food after watching POTC in Union Square

Thanks for the recommendations... I have been thinking about Pipa lately. I'm a little worried we will overorder and exceed the budget constraints here and at Aspen due to hunger levels.
any further ideas?
extra points for a restaurant a little more bang for buck...
also bonus points for byob

Food after watching POTC in Union Square

Hey hounds,
Need a tasty place tomorrow late night after watching Pirates of the Carribean for 2.5 hours and working up some serious hunger pangs. Will be in the Union Square area with a few friends - would like to spend maximum 15-20 bucks per person not including drinks. Can walk up to Flatiron/gramercy or down to the north end of the east village. Will not eat at Republic. Will not eat at Heartland Brewery or any of that crap. Think ethnic. Think spicy. Think fun. Something like Sala One-Nine but not. Gracias.

Good Cheap Eats in Soho area.

Gobo is sublime. Get the seitan in ginger marinade, the lettuce wraps, roti canai, yam&yucca fries, it is very hard to go wrong with any choice you make... and be sure to get a juice from their juice bar. This is slightly expensive vegan cooking at its best. The restaurant is sleek, buzzing and the food dazzles.

Saturday brunch/lunch place on Upper East Side

The new French place on 2nd Avenue around 89th street, Cafe D'Alsace is quite delicious. A lot of people like York Grill or Annie's or Peter's as well (I was not all that impressed), but to be honest, the best brunch spot on upper East side is Taco Taco (2nd avenue between 89th and 90th). Fantastic coffee, great authentic mexican brunch dishes (get the Heuvos en Cazuela) and incredibly friendly service. They let you stay and talk and relax and will not give you the check until you ask for it.
