Peconic Bay Scallops 2013

Hi East Enders! I am writing an article for a newspaper in NJ about Peconic scallops, and the huge price increase and decreased availability. Anybody have a lead or two for me...By the way, they are my fav, and drove out just to get some in Early November. My fish guy in NJ has them at $28 wholesale!

Petak's Fair Lawn NJ

Manning the stoves for a while at Grange in Westwood, and still catering with Picnic. Doing a lot of touring/demos for the book. Thanks for asking! And yes ELA, that tongue was melt in your mouth perfect. I like kraut on, extra Thousand Island on the side for a good dipping.

Petak's Fair Lawn NJ

Well, guys, this post did me in. Lunch today? Tongue sandwich from Kosher Nosh, and of course, a half sour pickle! Delish, of course. And, yes, always kraut on the reuben!

Petak's Fair Lawn NJ

Petaks has gone way down hill. I had to do a catering event that had a kosher meal for a guest or two. I always order it from Petaks. The client complianed that it was inediblle and I wound up with egg on my face. Need to find a new Kosher place for those occasions. As to pastrami, I'm with the masses here, Kosher Nosh. I know it is a $12 sandwich, but oh so worth it. This goyum takes it home, slaps on swiss cheese and grills it into a pastrami reuben with lots of butter. Delish.

Where are the Northern Jerseyans?

I remember the Whale well, especially when it was where Turvino's was, and then it moved. I can't remember Kind's Dairy, although I probably should!

Where are the Northern Jerseyans?

North Jersey has a lot of fine restaurants, IMHO. Cafe Matisse, Cafe Panache, Varka, Axia, Oceanas, Culinariane, Blu, River Palm (Edgewater), Sergios (in Clifton, fab italian
)

Good Sushi in the Paramus Area

I have to say that I prefer Sakora Bana. Hands down my favorite in Ridgewood, and the entire area. The uni is fresh and served, literally, in its shell. Rolls are terrific.

NJ chefs make "Best Chefs in America" list

I made the silly list, and it is silly. It's like back in the day when you made the list "who's who of American high school students" with the hope your parents would buy the book. Every other day I get an email telling me to buy this wonderful book, plaque, or free decal. Just a money-maker.

Petak's Kosher Deli in Fair Lawn - New Ownership?

Petaks? Say it isn't so. I love their Knish. They have been around my whole life. I am having breakfast today at Brunch Club and I will find out what is going on.

Yes, there is Rutt's, Hog Grill, Hanges. I hadn't been in years and forgot just how much I like the chili on their dogs. Good fries, good shake. The underdog of dogs.

Fair Lawn - Mezza Notte/Saddle River Road - Any Opinions?

The deli actually closed over the summer. It was under new ownership for less than a year. He stopped using all John's old recipes. Gosh, as I kid, I got a fish sandwich there every friday and it was delicious. Kosher Nosh is great, but in Fair Lawn Petak's makes a mean Knish. Zadies bakery is unreal. Rocca in Glen Rock puts out great food; I used to recommend it to our spill over customers. The Dutch makes a swell burger. The pork store needs no introduction, it is great. I love sitting outside in the summer at Oceana's for oysters and wine. Oh, and Wilkes Deli in Glen Rock is back to the original owners, and their terrific potato salad.

Great Filet

I know it is a chain, but I am a big fan of the filet at Capital Grille. Other choice would be River Palm in Edgewater...

Birthday Dinner in Cape May?

Glad to hear that Cape May weathered the storm! My vote goes to Washington Inn! I've never ever been disappointed. Follow that up with a close second for Ebbitt Room.

Fair lawn Russian ??

No. Taste of Home was never in the plaza building. Before the fire, where the pharmacy was was the Italian restaurant that started the fire. Where I am was the stationary store, and the expanded Radburn deli, after the fire it was always Quiznos. I can't think of a single Russian restaurant in Fair Lawn, and neither can my Russian waitress (who lives in town). Gosh, there should be!

Wait a minute! Taste of home was in the plaza building, but it was a small take out place that stocked lots of caviar.

Rehearsal Dinner

Pal's has its good points. Nostalgia for one. Mushroom soup (although not as good as it used to be). It is a great place for people that just want lunch or dinner, not a dining experience. And, a rehersal dinner is much more about the company, the toasts and the anticipation of the following day than the food.

Lobster is Cheap Again - SWEET!

Tommy et al...
In reality it takes at least three lb 1/4 - lb 1/2 to get a pound of lobster meat, sometimes even more, depending on how the claw works out and how diligent you are at getting the leg meat, body meat and knuckle meat. Back when I had my little Emerson joint, if someone wanted a lb of lobster salad I had to charge $50, and let me tell you we were barely making a profit on it. So, Peter's price is not at all out of control. My worry would be that they used "sleeping lobsters" in other words, the one's that just died in the tank.

Hardshells are preferable, the amount of meat is substatially more than a shedder, as well as being "meatier" instead of wetter. Just my two cents.

Wildwood/Cape May Questions

Indeed! However, I still vote for cocktail hour on the boat at Lobster House simply for the atmosphere and to watch the boats come in.

Wildwood/Cape May Questions

Instead of lunch at Lobster House I strongly recommend cocktails and snacks on the boat. I like Washington Inn more than 410 or Peter Shields. Mad Batter is a lovely location, as long as you have porch seating. More of a brunch place than lunch...

If price is no object, then Chef Central. If you want simpler cheaper, Restaurant Depot, but you need to know someone since it is not open to the public.

Soft Shell Crabs - in March?

They have been in for the last three weeks. Early by about three weeks. But then again, so is my garden! Foraged Morel mushrooms yesterday if that says anything about the season.
