New Orleans with 10 foodies, HELP!
The last time I tried to get crawfish from Big Fisherman, I went at 5 p.m. on a Saturday and they were sold out for the day. Definitely go early or call ahead to make sure you're not wasting your time going all the way there for nothing!
New hot dog place on Freret?
Looks like Freret is getting quite a few new businesses.

New hot dog place on Freret?
So someone from the New Freret association came into my office today and I asked her about it. Turns out there are two new places joining Uptown. Not only are we getting a Chicago-style hot dog joint, we are also getting a new Chicago deep dish pizza place!
New hot dog place on Freret?
It looks like a new place is moving into a space on Freret (between Soniat and Robert). It doesn't look like anything is in there yet but there's some Dr. Bob-ish looking signs on the outside with a big hot dog and "Dat Dog" written on it. I LOVE hot dogs...does anyone know anything?
Thing to do with black beans?
Ok, so I just made them and they are only OK. Not too "beany" but next time I'll probably up the cocoa powder and add some baking soda to make them less fudgy, as some people suggested in the comments of the recipe. But hey, they're healthy-ish, so I didn't feel bad eating half the pan.
Thing to do with black beans?
Has anyone made black bean brownies? I've seen a bunch of recipes floating around on the internet and was curious to how they actually tasted.
Has anyone eaten at La Petite Grocery in New Orleans?
I've only had dinner here once, but I'll throw in a plug for their popular happy hour from 5:30 to 6:30, which I've attended many more times. They have $1 specials on certain vodka drinks, and other specials on wines by the glass and cocktails. They also have some reduced-price apps which are ok, but become excellent after numerous $1 cocktails.
Disappointing food trip to NOLA (very long review)
Not crowded on Sunday in New Orleans? Are you kidding? There isn't a restaurant in this city that isn't PACKED on Sunday mornings (Surrey's, Mandina's, Coulis, etc...)
Help!!! Running into a Problem
Dick and Jenny's just started offering Monday night dinner.
Obelisk Wine Bar in Mandeville
Has anyone been and can tell me about the crowd/ambience of the place? I was thinking about getting my boyfriend's parents a gift certificate to one of the wine tastings that they do on Tuesday nights. How is the wine tasting and the accompanying appetizers? Is the class formal and stuffy or more casual? Would an older couple that enjoys wine but are not sommeliers feel comfortable? For reference, I'm looking for a place like W.I.N.O. in NOLA but without the drive across the causeway.
Chipotle-style Burritos in New Orleans area?
The big burrito at Taqueria Corona is a fork and knife deal, and not really like Chipotle. Juan's comes a bit closer than Felipe's in my opinion (although Felipe's is delicious). If all else fails, I hear there is a Qdoba on the northshore.
Crawfish and corn chowder recipe w/o condensed soups
I'm looking to get rid of a surplus of crawfish tails in my freezer and can't find a recipe for crawfish and corn chowder that doesn't involve condensed soups/cream cheese/creamed corn/etc. Can anyone help me out with a reliable recipe? I could also adapt a good shrimp and corn chowder recipe.
Then again, if someone has a really, really good recipe and reason to use condensed soups in this chowder, I'm not so fancy that I would refuse it. Thanks!
Baltimore Restaurant Week 2009
http://www.baltimorerestaurantweek.com/
The list was just posted. I haven't lived in Baltimore in about 6 years but will be in town for Restaurant Week (August 7-16). Any suggestions for places that not only serve great food, but are also putting out good deals for RW (i.e. no upcharges, substitutions allowed, etc.).
Thanks!
Dick & Jenny's & Stanley - 1st time, what do you like there??
The fried oyster appetizer (it also comes in the sampler) is great, as well as the sweet potato soup. Their wine list is also excellent.
Does Tulane graduation make dining difficult?
Students start making graduation reseverations as early as December. Call now if you're coming into town that weekend.
taking a group of Tulane Students out to dinner
How about Cafe Granada on Carrollton? Spanish tapas are fun to share and you can order a bunch for the whole table. Very reasonable prices and it's on the streetcar line so it's easy to get to from campus.
Dinner on St. Pats...drinking dad and grad...HELP!
I think the food is great at Clancy's but have always felt somewhat out of place there. Kind of an "Good Ol' Boys" club feel...and I'm definitely not a Good Ol' Boy. Others mentioned Dick and Jenny's and Jacque-Imo's, which I think would be a great choice. Both have a more casual atmosphere but the food is still excellent.
Something Different for Saturday Night
Other new restaurants that have been getting some talk are Boucherie and Coquette. Boucherie has been discussed a lot on the boards. I went to Coquette for lunch today and it was very nice. The dining room was open and airy dining room and you can tell they've put a lot of thought into their dishes. They also had an interesting cocktail menu. Since I had to return to work, I tried the "Hannah Montana" -- fresh-squeezed lemonade with blueberry/pomegranate puree :)
Large quantities of fried chicken
Whenever I needed a lot of fried chicken (parties, Mardi Gras, etc.), I used to go to the now-defunct Chicken Box on Claiborne. It was ridiculously cheap (albeit somewhat sketchy but I don't care about that), convenient to get to, fairly tasty, and I liked being able to tell people that if I had bought 1,000 pieces, I could have gotten a free wedding license. Since it's closed, I'm looking for a reasonably priced replacement.
Of course there's always Popeye's but it's more expensive (I mean not in the grand scheme of things but more expensive than Chicken Box). I went to a party recently where they had chicken from (I think) McHardy's. Any ideas for good places for large quantities of party-chicken?
Best recs for boiled crawfish dinner w/o car in NOLA?
If you go to Big Fisherman, you can eat them across the street in the courtyard of the Bull Dog (bar with a huge beer selection).
Red Beans and Rice - dutch oven necessary?
Thanks for all the advice! Problem solved: borrowing a HUGE dutch oven from a friend. BTW, I throw in a couple ham hocks and sausage.
Red Beans and Rice - dutch oven necessary?
Hey! I have a slow cooker. Sounds fantastic, then I can go pick up my king cakes. Same recipe or do I need to make adjustments?
Red Beans and Rice - dutch oven necessary?
I'm cooking a ton of red beans for a Lundi Gras party on Monday, enough that I'll need to cook two batches. It's not my first time, but I've always used a dutch oven. Unfortunately, I only have one dutch oven and the timing is such that I don't have time to completely cook one, transfer it, and then cook another batch in the same pot.
Will I mess the beans up if I cook one batch in a regular pot? How necessary is it for them to be in a heavy dutch oven?
Grilled Cheese Sandwiches
It sounds crazy, but my absolute favorite is muenster and cream cheese on whatever sandwich bread I have on hand, which is usually whole wheat. I'll spray the outsides of my sandwich with non-stick cooking spray (you know, to keep it healthy) and melt the whole thing on my Foreman grill until the cheese is melted through and the bread is browned.
Every time I make this, people will mock it and make faces until I let them try it. Then I usually end up making them for everyone that's there. Inspired by "The Terrapin" specialty bagel at Bagel Place in College Park, MD. Pairs well with intoxication.
DC hound girls weekend - need help!
I've eaten at Dick and Jenny's several times since the change in the kitchen. Everything is still wonderful, and I might even be so bold to suggest that there's been improvement. All the plates look great and the specials they've been offering recently have been stellar.
Krewe du Vieux dinner suggestions?
We went to Feelings Cafe last year. Yummy, and it's right on the parade route, so we were able to go outside between appetizer and entree to watch.
Huevos
Just tried the huevos rancheros and they were awesome. Delicious coffee and the sausage and pie guys are super nice to boot. I will definitely be going back. Cash only, by the way.
Dick & Jenny's
they put out a new menu a couple weeks ago and everything I tried was excellent. Charcuterie plate, savory cheesecake app, a soup with brie in it, lamb shank...all wonderful.
Bachelorette Party - MLK weekend
Ooo, I second the Goldmine for flaming DPs...you'll be sure to run into plenty of eligible bachelors to keep your group entertained.
Bee Sweet Cupcakes
I finally tried Bee Sweet Cupcakes (on Magazine, down the street from Whole Foods, next to Dirty Coast). It was great! The "I Heart Bananas Foster" was pretty good but the "Roger Rabbit" (carrot cake with cream cheese icing) was divine. Definitely worth checking out!
