Lunch near Transit Museum (in Brooklyn)

BoccaLupo is fantastic. You should give that a shot!

Brooklyn bridge marriott area

If you're going to Pedlar for coffee (yes, the best around), skip the bagels (Court St Bagels is mediocre at best) and get an egg wrap at Nectar (I add ham & tomatoes) for 4.50. Or hook around to Ted N Honey on Clinton St for other good light breakfast options. However, don't get coffee at T&H - blaargh!

Best coffee - Cobble hill, Carroll Gardens, Heights, Slope, etc?

Well sure enough in my short time in Cobble Hill thus far, Cafe Pedlar seems to be the only game in town. There are places that serve Stumptown drip, like Miles End, but as for top-notch espresso drinks I've found only duds. Ecropolis (what a teribble name) and Van Leuwen pull mediocre espresso. Have not tried Bien Cuit. I'll have to get over to Joe the Art of Coffee at the Dekalb Market. Joe, in my opinion, is the best coffee in NYC. We need one on Smith St!

Best coffee - Cobble hill, Carroll Gardens, Heights, Slope, etc?

Hi. We're about to move to Cobble Hill. I am fired up about all the great food but also need coffee recommendations in the above mentioned hoods plus Fort Greene, Bed-Stuy, Prospect Heights. I already know about Cafe Pedlar (which I love) but what else. The only other place I've been is Ozzys in PSlope and frankly i thought it was terrible. Just being honest.

New Lower East Side Coffee Shop

While exploring that LES meets Chinatown area the other day I came across this new shop called Lost Weekend which it turns out is the only Manhattan coffee shop serving Blue Bottle. Really cool place and the barista was saying they are all required to go through a Blue Bottle training. Well the training shows because the espresso was right on. I was genuinely impressed.

Blue Bottle's failed Caffeteria on Sullivan St has closed so Lost Weekend is now the Manhattan source. Welcome to the Lower East Side Lost Weekend!

We will soon be moving to Cobble Hill, BK. We are excited for the move but need an insider's opinion on what is the best of the best in Cobble Hill, Carroll Gardens, and Boerum Hill. Below is a list of places we like so far. Please help us to expand our list of "musts." Thanks for info!

Looking for best places for breakfast pastries and strong coffee

I agree that the best combos of coffee and pastries have to be done separately. If in the West Village, grab coffee at Joe the Art of Coffee followed by croissants at Claude Patisserie. In my opinion, the best croissants in town. Early a.m. when they're fresh out of the oven is highly recommended.

I just paid $4.25 for an iced coffee - what the...?

My original posting was not to suggest Grumpy isn't doing quality stuff. They really are and yes, that Costa Rican did have some very interesting dimensions of flavor. However, regardless of the uniqueness of the bean (not all that unique), and the extra labor involved in making iced (not much), the price tag simply isn't justified.

Also, the trend in coffee pricing in New York is part of what I was commenting on. I also refuse to pay 4 bucks to the Blue Bottle Cafe-teria place for their Kyoto iced thing.

Top 5 "Must Eats" in NYC

Must disagree! Lupa absolutely blew my mind the times I went. Nothing short of outstanding. Momofuku a sham? Come on. Some people seem to be bitter because Chang has become a celeb chef and want to condemn his restaurants because of that. The reality is his food is brilliant and delicious. I'm missing the "sham" part. Also, I've only had great service there.

Recs for a Man-Dinner

How about Azul in the Lower East Side? Lively Argentine place with killer mixed grill platters that include steak, chicken, lamb, chorizo, blood sausage. A great place for a man-feast! Just enough of a scene. Not too much.

Please don't go to Morandi. Over-priced and mediocre.

No, it was not good enough to justify 4.25. It was really good, but not exceptional. It should have booze in it for that price! Honestly, I've always liked Grumpy pretty well but after that kind of price gouging, they've simply lost my business.

I just paid $4.25 for an iced coffee - what the...?

Okay, so the quality of coffee has recently risen in NYC. Certainly. With the emergence of Stumptown, Blue Bottle, etc., we have finally become a reputable coffee town. The prices, however, are out of control.

I'm a big fan of iced coffee in the summer and I'm lovin' the cold brewed stuff. Birch Coffee and Think Coffee being my two recent faves. But today I ordered an iced coffee at Grumpy. It cost 4.25! I mean come on, I'm happy to pay 2.75, 3 bucks, maybe even a quarter or so more (I do understand the labor involved with making iced coffee well), but 4.25? Jesus!

Costa Rican bean. Great. Brewed in a clover. Nice. That'll be 4.25 please. Um...no!

Best place for a variety of Baltimore specialties?

Hi, I am in Baltimore for the weekend and read a thread mentioning some of the best local delicacies. I am hoping to find a market or neighborhood where I can get a cross section of the non-crab cake local favorites, such as pit-beef, scrapple, sausages, peachcake, snowballs, etc, etc. Is a place like Cross St Market the best place to sample a variety of these items?

If I go to Baltimore, MD what kind of foods are the known for other than crabs and crab cakes? Thanks.

I happen to be in Baltimore this weekend and came across this thread while hounding around. Is there a market or even neighborhood that has a good cross-section of these local specialties? A place where some of the best pit beef, crab cake, sausage, peachcake, snowballs, etc, etc can be experienced all at once?

Perhaps a place like Cross St Market is the place, but what do the locals think?!

Where to go for moist cupcakes?

Best two cupcakes in town: Pistachio at Sugar Sweet Sunshine & the namesake peanut butter with chocolate ganache at Sweet Revenge.

kids at shopsins?

Although the kids will inevitably love the food at Shopsin's, and Kenny will be sweet as pie to them, his foul-mouthed son will drop f-bombs the whole time, so it's up to you how you feel about that. I happen to love the food there but would never take my daughter.

La Carbonara - How did I miss this place?

What a great little find. Probably the best value I've found in quite some time. Really attractive space and better than average Italian at a surprisingly reasonable price point. We split a roasted eggplant appetizer, the pasta carbonara, and whole wheat penne with chicken, broccoli rabe, and mushrooms. All were excellent!

This is going to be a regular spot for me. On par with the likes of Malatesta and Da Andrea, but even cheaper.

New York food gifts (Coffee, Cheese, Wine, Olives)

Neither Stumptown nor Porto Rico are uniquely New York, but Stumptown's beans are much higher quality than PR. The mere fact that PR leaves their beans out in barrels and not sealed is reason never to buy beans there. Talk about a no-no for storing beans.

Who has the best pancakes in Manhattan?

None compare to Shopsin's. If you're with another person get an order of Slutty Cakes and an order of Blisters on my Sister ( a Huevos Rancheros-like dish) split them and tell me you've had a better breakfast...ever.
