Jim's Famous BBQ in Chapel Hill closed
I drove by tonight and saw for lease signs up. Had not been in a long time but can't say it's a suprise.
Pizzeria coming to Carr Mill Mall in Carrboro
Anna Maria's is in Carrboro and sells by the slice.
Last Dinner at Magnolia Grill
My family said goodbye Thursday night and we got many of the same things you did. I had my fingers crossed that softshells would be on the menu so we got 2 orders as well as the grits souffle. I got the pork chop, my wife got the potato crusted halibut and my son got the short ribs. Deserts were shared-vanila bean cheesecake, chocolate chip poundcake, and the chocolate waffles. Everything was great although I had really been hoping the buttered popcorn ice cream was going to be available.
GOOD breakfast and dinner food in Nags Head?
I'll throw out another rec. for Kill Devil Grill, Tortuga's Lie, and Mama Kwan's. If you want some Mexican food I like Outer Banks Taco Bar. http://obxtacobar.com/
I was never a fan of La Fogata.
Can't miss eats of all kinds within 100 miles of the Chapel Hill/Durham area
If you're going to be here before May 31st I would highly recomend waiting for a table in the bar (or eating at the bar) at Magnolia Grill.
El Agave on Hwy 55 near Hwy 54 in Durham
Not bad but not much different than your El Rodeo, Torrero's type places. They bring a "white salsa" to the table which was kind of kind of ranchy with maybe some crema too? Was not a fan of that.
Magnolia Grill in Durham is Closing
Is it just me or does 30 days notice seem pretty sudden? I would think a place that has been that revered for so long would have given folks a little more time to get a last meal in. I've heard that by the end of the day of the announcement all of May was booked up.
Magnolia Grill in Durham is Closing
Just got my reservations and will be having those, and a pork chop ( I hope ) and some buttered popcorn ice crean (I really hope). I love that place.
Restaurants in Durham?
A lot of talent has come out of MG. I think I've only had one occaision where they were out of something. A bone in pork chop from MG might be my deathbed meal if I got to pick it.
BBQ IN NC
I probably shouldn't admit this but I've lived in NC for about 36 of my 41 years and am kind of "over" BBQ. That said when folks are in town I'll take them to Allen & Son (Orange country location) but recently I tried The Pig and quite liked it. I'm not a big fan of vinegar and they aren't heavy handed with it like other places. I think for sides The Pig has A&S beat.
For non BBQ meals the Triangle has a lot to offer. Lantern is very good as is Elaine's which is almost across the street. I love Magnolia Grill in Durham and if I had to pick just one "splurge" place that would be it.
One week near RDU - where to eat?
Not much near the airport but there are a few Korean places near hwy 55/54 intersection that get a lot of love. A drive into Durham will give you some good options. While not seafood restaurants both Magnolia Grill and Nana's always have a couple seafood offerings on their menus. If you head into Chapel Hill I'd say go to Lantern or Elaine's. All fours menu's change somewhat regularly but they are all very good. Reservations might not be a bad idea.
Fresh tortillas in Durham
Just made is always better but does anybody know which places are using fresh ground masa and which are just using Maseca/reconstituted masa?
Lunch spots in Downtown Durham?
I'm going to disagree with you there and echo panthur and kirol7777's statements.
North Carolina BBQ TOUR
Damn, that's a LOT of BBQ over a week or so, me personally I'd get tired of it. Maybe stop in Durham for a nice dinner, Magnolia Grill is really good.
Best fried chicken in Durham and Chapel Hill NC
I like Dames alot too. After that in order for me is Shrimp Boats, Hog Heaven, then Bullock's. As for corporate bird I do like Bo's.
Chucks Now Open in Raleigh
I would hope you could get a burger without say mayo.(yechh) for example.
Nanataco in Durham open
I'm guessing it's an amusing way of catorgorizing the meat that "less adventerous" eaters would skip?
Nanataco in Durham open
I noticed on the menu that the tacos came with lettuce (vile weed) and ordered mine without.
Nanataco in Durham open
Thought it could use a new thread for new reviews since the other thread was already pretty long.
We went for lunch to day and thought it was really good, Scott Howell was behind the line. With just 2 people we couldn't sample a whole lot but here's what we had. The chips and salsa, $2.00 (chips and guac. $4.50) but the basket of chips is very generous. The salsa was slightly chunky and fairly mild, good but I like salsa a little hotter. The bottles of Cholula and Valentino on the table will take care of that though.
For the tacos (X3), burritos, quesadillas, and tortas you get a choice of meats. All are $6.00, rice and beans +$1.50
Chili rubbed pork butt
Rotisserie chicken
Chorizo
Garlic slow cooked beef
Braised beef tounge
Grilled veggies
And then there are the "dirty meats" +$2.00
Braised hog jowels
Duck confit
Lamb cheeks
Crispy pork belly
I went with 3 tacos-chicken, duck, and hog jowels. I wanted the crispy pork belly but they didn't have any today. My wife got the 2 tacos (pork and beef) with beans, rice and drink lunch special($6.50). All the fillings were great but the tortillas (corn although you can get flour) really stood out. They looked hand made/pressed and were a little thicker than normal, definitely more sturdy than a lot of corn tortillas but not dried out either, Overall we really liked it even though as die hard crawfish fans are still mourning the loss of The Fish Shack.
The take out menu lists the web address as www.nanataco.com but it isn't up yet. We were told to follow @nanataco on Twitter for specials and updates.
Beasley's Chicken and Honey Opened in Raleigh?
I stopped at one in Statesville several months ago and happened to notice there was some type of BoJ corporate office right behind the restaurant, the filet biscuit there was sublime. I've never had one in the Triangle that good, ever.
Beasley's Chicken and Honey Opened in Raleigh?
The boneless filet at Bo's can be pretty inconsistant. When it's good it's really good and when it's bad it's pretty damn bad, well maybe more disappointing once you've had a good one. I will say this, the Bojangles in the Triangle are operated by a company called Tri Arc Foods and I have noticed that the Bojangles outside of the Triangle area are usually better.
Of course you could always skip the ready made fillet biscuit, buy a bone in breast with plain biscuit and make a chicken biscuit TIme Out style. It's really good.
Taqueria concept coming to Rockwood area of Durham, NC
I'm a Los Comales fan but I work on Ninth Street so Chubby's is convenient. I just tried Salamandra last week since it's very close, it was very good with generously filled tacos. They start you with a basket of chips and a salsa made from pureed avacado, tomatillo, and chile-it's great.

Beasley's Chicken and Honey Opened in Raleigh?
I'm a lifelong Southerner and never heard of honey with chicken or chicken and waffles growing up. My first taste of chicken and waffles was at Roscoe's in Southern California a few years ago. I was plesantly surprised as to how good it was. I don't want my fried chicken that way everytime but it is really good. I'm glad Dame's is nearby when I have that craving.
Is honey mandatory at Beasley's? I'm not offended by the prices as I'm sure they are buying really good chicken and the staff I'm guessing gets paid better than folks that work at Bo/KFC/etc.but the no refils on iced tea is a little offputting.
Taqueria concept coming to Rockwood area of Durham, NC
Gringofied might be a little harsh. I'm sure it will be good, probably very good but It'll probably will get a lot of folks who wouldn't dare set foot in Los Comales.

An Outsider Review of eating in RTP
You should have gone to Elaines or across the street to Lantern or down the street to Cypress On the Hill. All of PeterB's recs are solid too, skip a return trip to Angus Barn.

Five Guys coming to Durham (15-501)
If the fries are no better than the ones they serve at the Southpoint location then no thanks. I live near there and will continue to go the Only Burger dine in location.
Ben & Jerry's Late Night Snack in the Triangle
Yep, I bought some and it's gone already.
Th' Rat- Chapel Hill
I think this sums it up pretty well. Having grown up in Chapel Hill and eating there pretty regularly from an early age it was a part of life. I never liked the pizza but the spaghetti was always solid and how can a skirt steak (The Gambler) and a basket of fries ever be that bad? I remember when the new (old) owners took over they changed few things that were not for the better like grilled chicken for the chicken parm. and using cheap crinkle cut fries instead of the usual steak fries that had been served for as long as I can remember. There are definitely things that should be updated but some things should be the way they always were.
