Long Weekend in Denver & Boulder
What about a tour of the Coors brewery in Golden? http://www.millercoors.com/golden-brewery-tour.aspx
Denver wedding: Specialty food/drinks for welcome bag?
Seconding the rec for Enstrom's toffee. I'd also go with Chocolove (www.chocolove.com)...my favorites are the cherries and almonds in dark chocolate and almonds and sea salt in dark chocolate.
Special Occassion Place in Denver
Mizuna does indeed have a tasting menu, although everyone at the table has to get the tasting menu. Definitely a good bet for a special occasion.

Just moved near City Park...Anything good around??
Ooh, good to hear the Indian place is decent. I've been wanting to try it, but was really hoping to hear a firsthand review from someone first. It's much closer to me than Little India, and I think cheaper, too!
DURANGO-- Serious Texas BBQ
According to the Denver Post yesterday, there's an outpost in Loveland now, as well. http://www.denverpost.com/food/ci_11979690
Help with a spicy cream sauce
Cool, thanks. I know I can get Fage at Whole Foods, maybe crema or creme fraiche as well.
Help with a spicy cream sauce
This sounds like it could be perfect! I've never used crema...it's just the mexican version of sour cream, right? Could I use regular sour cream? I'm sure I can find crema here (I'm in Denver), but with a toddler in tow, I really don't want to go hunting from store to store.
Help with a spicy cream sauce
"does an enchilada require a cheesy sauce?" Hmm...well, no, but I'm firmly of the opinion that cheese is a good thing! :-p
Seriously, though, other than the cream cheese (which isn't really cheesy), there isn't any cheese in these enchiladas, and I definitely like some cheesiness!
A green sauce could definitely work, although I do think I would like to make it at least kind of creamy. I think a red sauce would overwhelm the filling. I like the chipotles in adobo idea, too. I've never actually used them, but I'm pretty sure I have a can in the pantry.
I had this *wonderful* spicy cream sauce on some enchiladas at a Mexican restaurant several years ago, so that's what I've been trying to duplicate. Unfortunately, the restaurant changed ownership and those enchiladas aren't on the menu anymore.
Thanks for the ideas, keep 'em coming!
Help with a spicy cream sauce
I'm working on a chicken enchiladas recipe (essentially improving on a recipe I found in a magazine) and I'm really, really happy with the enchilada filling, but the sauce needs some help. The original recipe called for velveeta and diced tomatoes, and was, in a nutshell, nasty. I've been making a basic veloute and then adding some cheese and spices (pepper jack or mexican blend and chile powder and cumin), and it's ok, but not GREAT. I tried adding some minced serrano, but it wasn't very spicy, and I didn't like the texture. Just for reference, the filling has cream cheese (weird, but really yummy), green chiles, onion, garlic, chile powder, and cumin. Any ideas?
Dish (Edwards, CO)
I had the pleasure of dining at Dish in Edwards last week with RobynS and a couple of friends who were in from Vermont to ski. I'd been wanting to try Dish for a long time, based on everything I've read here, and I was definitely not disappointed. We sat at the kitchen bar, where we got to chat a little with chef Jenna and see what was going on in the kitchen, very cool.
We all did the tasting menu, and we got to experience an incredible number of dishes. We actually sampled almost everything on the menu, plus an extra from off the menu! I liked everything I tried, but a few dishes were definitely some stand-outs for me. We had an incredible beet panna cotta with shaved fennel in an orange vinagraitte and haystack mountain chevre. I never thought I would love a beet panna cotta, of all things, but it worked amazingly well! I also loved the torn herbs salad with artisan midnight moon cheese. The cheese was so good, I had to go pick some up at Whole Foods. We had several seafood dishes, and a beef tenderloin, which was excellent, but my favorite "main" dish was the rogan josh, incredibly tender lamb in a slightly spicy indian sauce. We finished off with a selection of desserts, including a fabulous chocolate banana bread pudding that I couldn't stop eating, it was so good.
I wish Dish was a little closer to home, although it's probably a good thing for my wallet and waistline that it's not. I will definitely be going back whenever I can, though!
Have we talked Denver Restaurant Week yet?
I went for Valentine's Day a few years ago, and while it wasn't spectacular, I thought that the food was solid. To be honest, I can't remember what we had anymore, but I do remember that we both had game and were both very happy with what we had. Maybe things have changed recently though...
Suggestions for 40th bday rest. in Denver
What about Vesta Dipping Grill? I was there for a girls' night out last summer and it was perfect.
Just moved to Boulder, CO - give me your favs!
I am not an expert on Indian by any means, but I went to Himalayas on the Pearl St mall a few months ago for the lunch buffet and really liked it. I tried as many different dishes as I could handle and they were all delicious.
knife sharpening in denver
Oliver's Meat Market on 6th avenue (near Cheesman Park) does knife sharpening, I believe. I think Sur la Table at Cherry Creek mall may, as well.
I have the Chef's Choice knife sharpener recommended by Cook's Illustrated, and have been really happy with it for home sharpening.
Fun/casual dins near the Ogden Theater, Denver
Hmm, what about dbar? www.dbardesserts.com
Only caveat is that both times I've been there, service has been kind of slow, which may be a problem if you're trying to get to a show. The food makes up for it, though!
HELP: need authentic italian market in denver - house made sausage especially
I used to work right across the street and we'd go there frequently for lunch. I can vouch for the sandwiches! Co-workers loved the cannoli, but I was not as big a fan. Then again, I'm not a huge cannoli fan in general...
Things to eat in Denver when you're vegan?
Watercourse, which is the sister restaurant to City O' City. Excellent food, although I've not tried the vegan options. www.watercoursefoods.com
Denver on New Year's Eve...? [Moved from Midwest Board]
My vote would be for Mizuna over Luca. I haven't tried Rioja, though. I just know that I've really, really enjoyed Mizuna both times I've been there. It seems cliched and over done, but the lobster mac & cheese really is to die for. Yum. Any of the choices will be pretty easy to get to from Stapleton (where the Renaissance is), but Mizuna/Luca (they're next door to each other) will be slightly easier since you don't actually have to do any downtown navigation.
New mom looking for kid-friendly, chow-worthy grub (Denver)
Well, I haven't been brave enough to venture out too often with my 2 1/2 year old, but one place that we did have a very nice dinner at was Marco's Coal-Fired Pizzeria. The staff was fantastic with my little guy, the food is kid-friendly without being the usual crap, and they do have a liquor license!
D Bar Desserts review (Denver)
I got the chance to try D Bar Desserts last night, so I thought I would write up a quick review here. In a nutshell, fantastic, and I will definitely be going back!
It's a very small place, and they don't take reservations, so we got there pretty early (around 6:30). We had a group of 6 for girls night out, and there really was only one option of where to sit for us, a large table in the middle of the room that seats up to 8. There are also 4 two-tops and 8-10 bar seats available. By the time we left around 9:30, the place was packed.
Every single one of us raved about our entree. I had the Kobe sliders, which were cooked perfectly, super juicy and delicious. They came with a little cup of perfectly cooked fries. My friends had the pizza salad sandwich, the mac & cheese, the grilled caesar salad, and two had paninis. We all ordered dessert, of course. I had the molten chocolate thingy. The cake part itself was just ok, not the best I've had although very good, but the berries and sauces it was served with were excellent. And there was some sort of caramel crunchy thing on top underneath the ice cream that was phenomenal. I also had a vanilla milkshake, which was very good, although not spectacular. Two friends had the cake and shake, one had milk and cookies, one had a brownie, and one had the apple tasting. The apple tasting looked phenomenal, but she wasn't sharing!
Service was friendly and helpful, although a little on the slow side. There was only the one server for the whole room and she was also running the counter for people walking in to buy desserts out of the case to go, so I think she was doing a pretty good job. We didn't mind since we weren't in that big of a hurry to get home to our kids! Very reasonable prices, too. Our bill before tip was $172 for 6 entrees, 6 desserts, a few take-home desserts, and lots of wine, coffee, and shakes.
We decided that we might have to make girls night out at D Bar a regular occurrence!
Savory Spice Shop opening in Lowry
I've been meaning to share this, but RobynS reminded me tonight that I hadn't yet. Savory Spice Shop is opening a new location in the Lowry Town Center (in Squeeze's former space) at 2nd and Quebec. I live right across the street, so I'm excited to check it out. I don't know exactly when it's opening, but it looks like it will be pretty soon based on the progress you can see through the storefront windows! www.savoryspiceshop.com
Anything decent in Glenwood Springs?
We ended up with two very good meals this weekend. My friend chose Tempranillo in Basalt for dinner on Saturday night after looking at menus online. She saw they had chicken piccata and she really really wanted chicken piccata, so that was that. Service was ok. We made a reservation, just in case, and arrived to find that they didn't have any two-tops available, which I thought was a little odd. We were given a choice of a four-top or the community table instead, and we chose the community table, which was nice, although in the bar. My friend was actually happy about that, since she was able to watch the Brewers game during dinner. Our waiter was mediocre. I asked for a wine suggestion, telling him that I don't know much about spanish wines but that I'd like a white and I usually like Pinot Grigios and Sauvignon Blancs. He proceeded to tell me that they have a Sauvignon Blanc and a Pinot Grigio, although the pinot was from Italy. Gee, thanks. I ended up with the Sauvignon Blanc, but he was no help at all with my wine choice. They attempted to give our salads to the gentlemen sitting a few chairs down, at first, and we had to tell them who ordered what when it was delivered, which seemed strange for a finer restaurant, especially when there were only two of us and it wasn't that busy anyway. The food was pretty good. My friend had the Mediterranean Salad, the chicken piccata, and tiramisu, and was very happy with all of it. I tasted her tiramisu and thought it was just ok, but I'm a bit of a tiramisu snob. I had the Beet Salad (very good), the rack of lamb, and the molten chocolate cake. The lamb was excellent, and served with some roasted peppers, and oddly, "Spanish" fries. I'm not sure what was "Spanish" about the fries. They were good, but very average french fries, and not what I would expect as a side with a $30 entree. The molten chocolate cake was tasty, but could have used a scoop of ice cream or some whipped cream with it. Overall, a decent experience, but not what I would call fantastic. I would most likely go back, but would prefer to try other places first.
Thanks to the iffy weather on Sunday, we decided to skip our planned outdoor activities and just drive around for some fall colors viewing before heading home to Denver. We briefly walked around Aspen, but decided to head back up to Carbondale to find somewhere for lunch. Driving down Main St, we saw Ella, and I remembered that I read here that they had an excellent brunch, so we decided to give that a try. A great decision! Our server was decent, although very soft-spoken and difficult to hear, even though the restaurant was not that loud. She dropped our check before asking if we wanted dessert or coffee (which we did), but she did ask without us having to say something. My friend had an omelette and said it was excellent. I tried her side of roasted potatoes, and they were yummy. I had the crab melt, which was very good. I chose the parmesan fries for my side dish, and they were worlds better than the fries the night before. As good as our entrees were, dessert was even better. I had the chocolate souffle, which was exceptional (and DID come with a scoop of ice cream!). My friend had the blueberry-peach cobbler. I tried a bite, and it was just as good. Two thumbs up for Ella!
Anything decent in Glenwood Springs?
Thanks for the help! I did some searching on Basalt and Carbondale and I like the looks of Ella, six89 (probably at the bar), and Tempranillo, so we may try one of those. I'll probably let my friend (the picky one) take a look at menus and see what she thinks. And of course, I'll check out the free papers and see if we see anything better!
We might check out the taqueria or burger place for lunch on Sunday, so I'll definitely keep those recs in mind.
Will report back with results!
ISO recs for Littleton CO
There are some good options in those areas. Well, maybe not in Highlands Ranch. What are you looking for as far as cuisine/price/etc?
Anything decent in Glenwood Springs?
Actually, I'm pretty sure we're all meat lovers. ;-) Sounds like that might be a good choice.
If we decide to take a leaf-peeping drive down towards Aspen, anything (reasonably priced) that we might find down that way?
Anything decent in Glenwood Springs?
I'm headed up to Glenwood Springs this weekend with a couple of girlfriends for a Girl's Weekend. I did a search, but wasn't able to find much about places in Glenwood. We would like something nice, but not too upscale or expensive (preferably under $20/entree). We're open to pretty much any cuisine, although my one friend really doesn't like Asian food. Anyone have any recommendations?
Ocean and nine75 Close (Denver)
Just saw on the news tonight that the owner of Ocean and nine75 closed both restaurants as of today. Here's a link to the story in the Rocky: http://www.rockymountainnews.com/news/2008/sep/29/ocean-and-nine75-eateries-closing/
Denver, CO
Marco's Coal-Fired Pizzeria would be a good choice with a kiddo, as well. I took my 2 year old there a couple of months ago, and the staff was fantastic with him...brought him out a little ball of dough to play with, offered to show him the kitchen. And the food was good, too!

We've gone to Berry Patch Farms a couple of times with our playgroup and love it. www.berrypatchfarms.com The kids were eating the berries faster than the moms could pick 'em! :-)

Haystack Mountain goat dairy (near Boulder) used to have a tour, but they recently announced that they're closing the dairy (but still making cheese) so I'm not sure what the status of that is. I've heard nothing but wonderful things from people who have visited there. http://www.haystackgoatcheese.com/
