Little Serow in DC – Report
We had a great experience at Little Serow, and I want to echo what I've read here about service: We brought our ten-year-old with us (he's an adventurous eater), and he was treated with the same respect and good humor and thoughtfulness that my wife and I experienced. No talking down to him. The Little Serow team know how to hire and train their people well. All three of us look forward to going back.
Best Burger
Also agree about Roam. We had great burgers there this past Friday evening. My wife said it was the best veggie burger she's had in a long time.
HELP! Need Central/ Southern Coastal California Recs!!
Let me know what you/they think. Cheers!
HELP! Need Central/ Southern Coastal California Recs!!
Gail and Ed: We had two really good (and inexpensive meals) at Seaside's Chopstix, off of Folsom. I know that eliz1028 is not looking for Vietnamese, but I'm curious if other Monterey/Seaside folks have eaten there and their thoughts. The pho was excellent - wonderfully aromatic broth - and the spring rolls were also very good. No beer/wine license and cash only.
South Dakota recs for a visitor?
I had dinner last night at the Corn Exchange - very good. Not great: I wish the cheese had not been cold but room temp, and there seems a lot of Sturm und Drang from the wait staff for a relatively small room. But that said the wine list is excellent, and the soup and smoked trout appetizer I had were great. Enjoy.

Bayou on Penn
We ate at Bayou last evening and had a great meal. I liked the vibe of the place, the Abita beers and a well-made Sazerac, and the BBQ shrimp po' boy.
Coming to D.C. in April...We know nothing!! Need some good recs.
We had a late lunch at Pho DC today, and while pricey, it was very good. My son liked his brisket pho, which I would order next time, rather than the beef. It was far more tender.
Pizzeria Orso - originally posted on another website
My son and I just had lunch at Orso, and the pizzas were very good, the service excellent. I liked the charring on the crust and would wish for even more, since I was weaned on New Haven pies. Unfortunately, we'll not get back, since we did go miles out of our way to get to Falls Church (we live in Bethesda).
Dick & Jenny's or Cochon for a Friday dinner?
We had dinner last evening at D & J's and much preferred it over our meal earlier this week at Cochon. Gumbo and cornbread were truly excellent; we could not keep our hands off our son's sweet potato fries. Also much preferred the neighborhood feel to the place - was a truck to get out there from Poydras but well worth it.

Back to Sacramento for holidays, what's new this year?
I posted about Masullo below and also had dinner at Magpie while in town. As with Masullo, a fine meal - great piece of fish, with lentils and Brussels sprout leaves. Had it with the Cooper Vineyards 2006 Carignane - delicious.
Back to Sacramento for holidays, what's new this year?
I ate at Masullo last evening - am in town for a conference - and I second the above: It was excellent, from start to finish. Had the Lotte pizza, and the dessert special, a kind of deconstructed apple tart, was an updated and delicious version of what Mom used to make - just what I needed after a week on the road. Highly recommended - will be back when I'm back in Sacramento.

OK, will need to try when we are there next summer - thanks for the rec!
Solo Bistro: Bath ME
I know the above post is more than two years old, but I also have to give big props to Solo Bistro. Had dinner there last evening with friends, and it was excellent - great wine list, great focus on local, in-season ingredients, funky decor, great service. We will definitely go back!
93 Townsend, Boothbay Harbor
Had lunch there this week, and it was disappointing. My lobster roll was just all right, but my wife's deconstructed lobster salad had what seemed to be supermarket lettuce, nothing local, and tired lobster that was unseasoned. It was too bad, as we were looking for a place that was a cut or two above most of the other dock-focused dining in Boothbay Harbor. It does have a good wine list. Hope that your lunch was better!
Charleston, SC Recommendations
Our veggies were the best part of the meal. And I wonder if Uptown Jim and I had the same waiter. We waited interminably for our meals (our eight year old was very, very patient), and I loathe it when a waiter has to look at my menu to tell me what comes with a dish, as if I can not read that myself. I also asked the gent at the bar for a wine suggestion for my main course, since our waiter was, as mentioned above, clueless about the wines. In contrast I'd go back to Cru again and again, since it is the kind of room that we like (cozy, not at all noisy), the food was very good, and the service was excellent.
Charleston, SC Recommendations
We just got back from Charleston. Best meals were at Cru and Hominy Grill. FIG was a disappointment; the service was uneven, the food was just OK, and the dining room was way too loud - could not hear my table mates over the din. We also went over to Sullivan's Island - it was great beach weather when we were there - and were able to walk up to the relatively new Cafe Medley. Has a great wine and beer selection, cheese plate, smoothies, a few other small plates - was far more appealing to us than the crowd at Poe's.
Anyone been to Comet Ping Pong?
Had the white pizza today -- the Yalie -- and it was OK. I wish there had been more clams, and I was not crazy about the crust -- far too thin for my taste. The caramelized onions on the pie were delicious, and my son really liked his chicken wings. I think that we will go back, for the ping pong and juke box in back were great fun. But for pizza I will stick with Two Amys.
Surfside in Glover Park?
Will add my two cents: Had a great lunch yesterday at Surfside. I had a fish taco, my son had a pork taco, and I preferred the remnants of his, with a sweet spicy thing going on with the salsa and the pork. Both, in short, were excellent, and we look forward to a return trip.
New Haven, CT Restaurants - Help My List
No offense taken, Scargod - different tastes, right? These two dishes - one was the salmon, the other I can't remember at the moment - had an odd texture, which suggested to me frozen fish and then frozen fish that was just not cooked as carefully as it could've been. It was not the end of the world, and I tend to be very picky about my fish - so keep in mind my pickiness when reading my comments. Will try your other suggestions when I'm back in Hamden - appreciate these new ideas!
New Haven, CT Restaurants - Help My List
Had dinner last evening at Hamden's Luce, for my folks' wedding anniversary. It is sort of the only game in town -- in Hamden, that is -- and was only all right. I like the restaurant's bar and wine list, but the two fish dishes that I tasted -- my own and my mother's -- were mediocre. Stick with beef and pasta, I think. My nephew had the risotto -- a giant serving -- and it was tasty.
Best burger in D.C.?
Just tried Ray's, MarcDC -- truly great. My son and I went over this afternoon, and the wait in a long line was worth it. I went very light on toppings so that I could savor the beef. Could not believe how juicy the burger was -- look forward to going back.
San Miguel de Allende Restaurants
We just got back from SMA, had breakfast at Petit Four two mornings the week that we were there, and had Paco (Petit Four's owner) and his team at the cafe make us a squash pie for our Thanksgiving dinner on Thursday. Everything from Petit Four was delicious, and Paco's cooking class at the Sazon was instructive and great fun. Highly recommended.
Best burger in D.C.?
Just had my first burger at Bethesda's BGR -- very, very good -- and will be curious to compare to Ray's when we head over there this weekend. Yes, the sweet potato fries were delicious -- w/ just a little vinegar and ketchup.
Marco's Coal Fired Pizzeria Denver Colorado
Yes, ClaireWalter, I had read that Nancy Proto was from New Haven. I went to high school with people with that last name and wonder if they are related. And I will be sure to try Proto's and Virgilio's when I am back in Denver; I also hear that The Oven is also very good. Thanks for the info. Cheers!
Marco's Coal Fired Pizzeria Denver Colorado
I ate at Marco's last evening. Yes, I too thought the pizza there was very good and will go again. The center was a little undercooked for my taste, but the crust was delicious and had some nice charring. I'd agree with a previous post comparing to Oakland's Pizzaiolo, where I ate this summer: Marco's pie had more cheese on it than what I usually prefer.
I thought the service and wine list were excellent. And Marco was on the floor and offered to make me a clam pizza on my next visit; I grew up eating lots of that at Pepe's in New Haven.
Pizza in Athens, GA
Just wrote this on another Athens thread: Bischeros is no longer Bischeros; it's called 237 Prince, http://www.237prince.com/, and while the pizza oven still works, I just had an incredibly pedestrian Margherita. Too bad. I was hoping for a crust that was far more chewy, a pizza with far less cheese.

San Antonio/ Riverwalk - Final Four Weekend help!
I had two very good meals in San Antonio this weekend, but each restaurant is a cab ride from the Riverwalk area. The first was at Dough up at 6989 Blanco, near the airport. It was about a $20 cab ride to get up there but very much worth it -- great Neapolitan pizza. The polenta cake dessert was delicious. Dough's been open about three months. The other was at Liberty Bar at 328 East Josephine, about an $8 cab ride from my hotel. Had the lamb burger and a glass of pinot noir at the bar. Just what I needed. Good luck!
