Big mistake!

I'd make another batch with dill. And then taste the cilantro one...you may be onto a new thing.

Everytime I see those lists (the Roadfood one) I mourn the demise of Buntyn's in Memphis. I ate there every day during my college days and lived barely a block away.

I've heard good things about Wynn's Diner on Leicester Hwy. Haven't been there for personal testimony. It might be worth a trip the next time you are in town.

Also the new BBQ place on Patton Ave., Bonfire BBQ, is really promising. I think it's taken a leap above Okie Dokies for me now. I had lunch at Okie Dokies today and wished I'd gone to Bonfire.

I don't know of any Biscuitvilles in the area near Asheville. Are there? I thought they were more up around the Triad.

Aldi Vs. Costco

This afternoon I stopped by Target to exchange a defective item and while I was there decided to pick up a half gallon of milk to save some time. I put it back when I realized it was $4.59. So I drive a couple of blocks over to Aldi and got the same organic milk for $2.95. I'll take it. Also saw roasted Marcona almonds, both plain and with rosemary, for $5.99 for 6 ounces. I haven't seen those at Trader Joe's lately.

My Pyrex Pan just exploded!

I thought at the time that episode came out that it was quite hazardous for him to do that on his show without any sort of explanation.

Ours has good fresh produce, too. But I have seen it when it comes out and a lot of it is quite cold. Makes me wonder.

Aldi Vs. Costco

I think a lot of the problems with their produce stems from the fact (or my presumption) that it is all refrigerated before being brought out to the floor. Bananas shouldn't be refrigerated or they (surprise!) turn brown.

Ok. Sorry for my amusement at the title. My first impression of it was not that the OP was asking about corporate structure. Maybe blackpointyboots was asking just that.

Aldi Vs. Costco

I wasn't thinking of the overall business or corporate structure. Just tiny little store vs. the biggest of big box stores. Two or three employees on hand vs. dozens.

The comparison makes me laugh.

Where can I find pickling lime on LI?

I bought it in Walmart recently.

Any memories of "poor people food" from your childhood that you still crave?

Yep. That's one of my comfort food breakfasts. Its best when it's snowing outside accompanied by hot cocoa.

Trader Joe's YAY/MEH/NAY Thread - August 2015

We have a CSA here (in NC) that freezes their summer produce and delivers it in the winter when fresh isn't available. A great idea, I think.

Trader Joe's YAY/MEH/NAY Thread - August 2015

I'm all about eating local, but with some things it's just difficult. I doubt there are many orange or banana groves in NYC.

Also NY is a pretty big state, as you say, so most of it is more than 100 miles away. And parts of NJ and CT are further than 100 miles, too.

Isn't local usually considered to be within 100 miles?

I didn't mean that you weren't welcome to reply, but that I assumed she meant pecan butter which might lend itself to a light olive oil more. Not sure I'd use it though as I usually don't have it on hand.

Aldi Vs. Costco

OP wasn't asking us to compare the two (except in the subject line), but he did ask us what kinds of items those of us with access to both get at each one.

Aldi: Milk (organic in half gallons which makes me happy), butter, some cheese, produce (usually fresh at my store), dried pasta, salsa, chocolate (baking and treats), almond butter, some canned goods, paper plates, cereal (their multi-grain "cheerios" are better than TJs O's), sometimes bread, those yummy tuna packets, and occasionally some frozen items. Popsicles! Last year they had a frozen pizza in their Simply Nature line that made a great lunch - the four cheese was a tasty foundation to add my own toppings, and the uncured pepperoni was really good, too. Usually frozen pizza is a no go for me, but not this one. I wish they'd bring it back. :(

Costco: Paper goods (TP, paper towels), chicken in portioned packaging (good for freezing), coffee, those grapefruit cups (yum!) when it isn't in season, berries, some produce that I can use up fairly quickly or that keeps, electronics, vitamins and drug store stuff, batteries (eneloop rechargeables are great), laundry detergent, gas from the gas station (cheapest place in town)... I forget what else. It's worth it for me - a single person. Oh, I got a great vacuum cleaner there recently and... a kitchen sink. Yes, everything including the kitchen sink!

Edit to add: Aldi has a lot of gluten free products now. I don't get them but I have a friend who is thrilled to have access to more variety.

Oh, tell me more about the hot pecan butter. Is this warm or hot by virtue of peppers, etc. added?

Yep. I'm not putting it down at all. I love a clean well stocked Aldi store. Not so much a dirty gross one.

My Aldi experience!

Yesterday I had a conversation with the cashier at one of our Aldi stores. Depending on their shifts, they are required to be there at 5am and be able to do anything needed in the store. Lots of heavy lifting. So it's not quite cushy as thought. Still a good job, imo.
