Any memories of "poor people food" from your childhood that you still crave?

I make a similar cinnamon toast pretty frequently - about once a month for my guilty pleasure breakfast. Also with good dark coffee with chicory.

Were we separated at birth??

Top Chef Boston – Ep. #6 – 11/19/14 (spoilers)

My mental picture includes the elves calling up the Ocean Spray people requesting they hold back part of last years harvest so it could be used for TC in the spring.

Trader Joe's YAY/MEH/NAY - November 2014 (Part II)

There are crispy ones which come in a orange colored foil package and the soft chewy ones which come in a clear plastic packet. I think people hear have found both to be favorable - depending on the person.

Oh, no. The chewy ones or the crispy ones?

Steam, don't boil those hard cooked eggs.

Steam is steam so I don't know why that wouldn't be possible. This week I steamed some aged eggs with a bit of baking soda added to the water. I'd never used anything other than plain water. I wasn't expecting much of a difference since I kind of doubted the soda would affect a steamed egg, but for whatever reason these were the easiest eggs to peel that I can recall.

Yep. That was them. I almost mentioned they were in a paper wrapping.

I didn't check them out thoroughly but the Asheville store had something called Danish Kringle today (within the last 30 minutes!). Is that what you are looking for?

I can't cut my pie pumpkins!

I use a large Chinese cleaver and a rubber mallet and let fly being really careful to keep anything important out of the way. Like body parts. It usually only takes one or two whacks.

Appalachian recipes ideas?

Just for clarification, greasy beans aren't just any green beans. They are a particular heritage bean and they aren't greasy at all. The skin of the bean has a naturally shiny skin hence the name "greasy". I doubt if one could find fresh greasys this time of year.

Red Grapefruit in Cups at Costco

I tip the container back so that the air bubble is in the area where the tab is before I pull back on the tab. No spraying that way - or at least significantly reduced. If one doesn't consume the juice, then it's simple to pour it off before taking it lid off completely. I do, so I just sip a bit off before I finish taking off the lid so very little mess.

Top Chef Boston - episode 2?

I just watched a truncated episode of Top Chef that my DVR captured on Monday. It started out with a surf and turf QF challenge judged Todd English. Then it abruptly stopped after the challenge. Was this aired by mistake? Did anyone else see it? Unfortunately, I deleted it so I can't go back to see the description again. It was definitely not Ep.1. I'm a bit confused...

If he's from Michigan, then Asheville winters would be a piece of cake to him.

Trader Joe's "pumpkinundation" 2014

I tried the pumpkin rolls this morning. First a MEH, but by the end of one they were nudging towards a YAY. I really didn't like the topping/icing at all. If I get them again, I'll make my own. Next time, I'll also take them out of the package so that I can unroll the whole shebang, put in some pecans, roll back up, separate, and bake. They just need something to me. I think pecans will do it.

I'm wondering if chocolate covered espresso beans could be used? Those are easy enough to find.

Surely you don't just put the frozen lump down the chute? That will make a rather disgusting mess at the bottom.

Pimento Cheese - who knew?

I just had a Palmetto pimento cheese sandwich for lunch. I didn't care for the bacon one, though I do like the jalapeño one on occasion.

Best All-Natural, No Sugar Added Peanut Butter Brand

Seeing a reference to it online recently led me to Big Spoon Roasters peanut butter. It's yummy. And quite costly. Not sure it would do for everyday due to the $$, but good if I want a quality peanut butter for a recipe.

Okra - minimizing the slime

If they are super fresh, you can eat them raw with some sort of creamy dip. I had these at a party the other day and couldn't get enough of them. If course, they were picked out of the hosts garden just an hour or so earlier...

Top Chef Duel 9/10 Dale vs. Tiffany

"Also, I don't care what Tiffani claims about "the south," a biscuit is not a canapé."

If she'd made a small bite-sized biscuit, it could have been considered one. But not the normal large size biscuit.

Pimento Cheese - who knew?

I agree with the posters below that just because something has pimentos combined with cream cheese, it's not the same as my Momma's pimento cheese. Just because they have common (sort of) ingredients doesn't make them the same.
