Question about Indonesian/Malaysian food in Queens
Hey all! Strange question that i hope someone can answer--
I am coming down next saturday with a group of 11 and would really like to have us finish the day with something different. I am thinking of one of the Malaysian or Indonesian places discussed on the board, but I have someone with me who is SERIOUSLY allergic to seafood of any kind. I won't do Thai (no Sripraphi!), because I know almost everything is prepared with fish sauce, but I don't know about other Southeast Asian cuisines. Any thoughts? Filipino may be an alternative as well. Just need to make sure it is "safe", and I know from experience that it is hard to get the severity of the situation across to servers sometimes. Any thoughts or other alternatives would be appreciated. this is a group who is well travelled and willing to try anything different. Queens would be best as it is on the way home to CT.
Bagels and Coffee near Lincoln Center
My wife and I are going to Turandot at the Met on Saturday night and staying at the Empire Hotel nearby. Anyplace within walking distance we can get good bagels and coffee for breakfast the next morning (not Starbucks). Last time we were in town we stayed on East Side and ate at Essa Bagel ansd liked it. Anyplace similar?
(BTW-dinner Saturday evening at Picholine.)
Thanks!
Inexpensive with a large group of (mostly) kids
I am bringing a large group (30) to the city on a Monday and am looking for decent places that can easily handle a group that size. The kids are a group of orphans from Uganda who are touring the northeast for 6 weeks as a choir to raise awareness for their center, and range from 9 to 17. I get the fun job of entertaining them on their days off, and I am taking them to the city for the day. Type of cuisine is not really important, but a larger (non-mcdonalds-y) type place with reasonable prices would be great. We may do street food for one meal, but a sit down dinner would be nice. Any thoughts on a place that can handle a group like that? Pizza would be fine, and may be the cheapest way to go overall.
Thanks!
Large Group on Saturday Night in Brooklyn
Hey all! I will have a large group (14 or 15) with me on Saturday evening looking for a nice sitdown, share your food type meal at around 7:00. I am thinking maybe one of the Middle Eastern places on Atlantic Avenue. Any thoughts on who would be able to accomodate a large group? I love Yemen cafe, but I seem to recall them being a bit cozy. If I was in Queens, Sripraphi or Pio Pio would be perfect, but we really need Brooklyn. Any ethnic group would be fine. We have a mixed group with mostly adults and a couple of kids. Suggestions?
Monday night hangouts with a 20 year old?
I'm coming into the city for a few days with a 20 year old friend, and we'd really love to hang out at a few places, have some snacks, and hear some music.. Jazz, rock, indie, whatever. If we were both 21, I'd just hit the LES and see what was around, but I'm afraid he wouldn't be able to get into many places. Any thoughts on where would be good? I know there are a couple of interesting middle eastern places down there with music/ belly dancing/ food, etc. Any of them that you know of allow a 20 year old?
Thanks!
Kebab Cafe Alternative?
OK, so I was going to hit the Kebab Cafe with a buddy tomorrow night. Expecting a cheap, unique meal, but recent posts have made me wary (as much because of the apparent increase in price as anything). I have a young (20) friend coming to the city with me for a few days, and he is looking for some adventurous, cheap eating. Going to Sripraphi on Tuesday night, and may stay on LES Monday for music and such (if a 20 year old can get in anywhere!), but tomorrow (Sunday) night is open. Inexpensive and unique, good food are the key words. (BTW, he has already done Jackson Heights, so a different option would be good.) Any takers?
Quick dinner on the way out of the city in The Bronx?
Just browsing around online, checking out a few suggestions and noticed that you can get a $25 off coupon for Artie's of City Island (and MANY other restaurants listed on this board) for $10 from Restaurant.com. This is a legit site i have used before. You just need to read the fine print re:when you can go, how many in party, etc. But if you're heading out to a place anyway, might as well check this site to see what's there!
Quick dinner on the way out of the city in The Bronx?
Thanks! I am a big fan of Arthur Ave as well. Just thinking of something a little different this time. Artie's sounds like a possibility...
Quick dinner on the way out of the city in The Bronx?
Hey all-
I am coming to Queens with a friend for 3 days and leaving on Wednesday around dinner time. I know where we're going for most other meals, but I don't want to waste a single chance for good food. Anyplace you can think of to stop on the way out? Probably taking Whitestone to Hutchinson. Jerk chicken, maybe, or someplace on city island? Hole in the wall with great food would be ideal!
Bakeries on Cape Cod
Wolfie's on Lower County Road in Dennisport is great for breakfast pastries...muffins, cinnamon buns, etc. Also good coffee. Nice to take out, or a few tables inside and chairs outside.
Breakfast in or near Plainville?
Sorry I missed the weekend for you, but for future reference, the Main Street diner on Main St in Plainville is the best in the area for breakfast or lunch. Any omelettes are great for breakfast, and I've been told by my southern friend their biscuits and gravy are right on. For lunch, they have one of the best burgers in the area.
Cheburechnaya alternative for Saturday Evening?
Thanks for the endorsements and info. I'm more convinced than ever to try the Kosher uzbeki places. However, we can't stay that late. Anyone have any thoughts on an alternate place to go?
Cheburechnaya alternative for Saturday Evening?
Hey all! I have a group of 11 coming into the city and I am looking for a place for a good group meal. Cheburechnaya would be perfect (cheap, interesting, plenty of space, shared food, etc...), but of course it doesn't open until later on Saturday night. Any other good alternatives? A place like that where I could order for the table and we could share it all would be perfect.
thanks!
Looking for some Polish Home Cooking
Just visited Old Poland Bakery and Restaurant at 190 Nassau on Saturday with a group. Very authentic and EXTREMELY inexpensive if that is what you're looking for. Zero atmosphere, but we're all about food, right?
Best place for dinner with a large group in Jackson Heights?
I'm bringing a group of 11 in to Jackson Heights next Saturday. Looking for a good, inexpensive place for a large group to order as a group, share and sample food, etc. I'm thinking of El Chivito D'oro as I've been there before, and they have huge portions that could be shared, but any suggestions would be appreciated!
Best Ethnic Counter Service/ Snacks in NYC
Here's the deal-- I am a Connecticut resident who enjoys bringing friends into the city to experience neighborhoods and tastes they normally wouldn't get to. I'm bringing a group of about 8 in for the day armed with subway passes and appetites, and we want to have small, quick tastes in as many unique places as we can get to in 12 hours. Places like Arthur Avenue market, any of the many counter service places in Jackson Heights, Mandoo in Flushing or Manhattan, Manna's buffet in Harlem.... stuff like that. (BTW it's a Saturday afternoon, so Kosher may be closed.) Any suggestions would be welcome!
