New Years Challah
Upper Crust bakery on 45th at Burnet. Delicious challah. Ordering ahead couldn't hurt, but I've never had any trouble.
Review of Lambert's
Haven't tried the ribs, we never get past the bar menu. As others have said, frito pie (serves two, or one masochist) is hard to argue with. Their sliced beef sandwich with hotlinks and caramelized onions is also not to disparaged, and the price point there doesn't offend like the bbq entree menu might.
Best French Fries in Austin
Guess i will have to give them another try some time. 5 guys is near my place but the fries were soggy limp oily and unflavorful. the hamburger was nicely greasy but otherwise unremarkable.
the note below recommending p terry's made me laugh. glad someone checked out the post count on the source.
Who have the best pie for holiday?
i'm a big fan of upper crust. they are good as ever.
They Want HOW MUCH?
Just finished unloading bitterness on El Greco in a gyro thread, so while i'm at it, El Greco on guadalupe wants eight bucks for a gyro that presents as a (small and mediocre) pork taco on pita bread. No coke or fries included. One taco.
What restaurants make their gyro meat in-house?
El Greco only serves "gyros" with the most sarcastic of quotation marks. Ask for one and you had better relish your tiny pork taco on pita bread because the chunk of change they'll ask for could put you in hog heaven at some other eatery. I spit in their general direction for being conveniently located for me while having ridiculous prices, middling portions, and the nerve to foist 8 dollar pork tacos on the neighborhood.
Where can I get good calamari and tuna tartare?
Another vote on the tuna tartare at Vespaio. can't recommend their calamari.
Baby Shower Cake
Uppercrust Bakery at Burnet and 45th, out of their case or made to order.
lulu b's:vietnamese sandwiches/snacks in 78704!
I can't understand the wait there and quickly learned to phone in orders.
I will stand behind the quality of both the grilled and bbq pork sandwiches. Consistently delicious.
Best Salsa in Austin
Taco Deli. Fonda san Miguel. All of their salsas.
Curra's, Trudy's, Maudie's, Polvo's, Ana's are all good enough to eat too much of, all pretty similar.
El Greco
More agreement. Also, Milto's gyro isn't just a few ounces of pulled pork like the greco. 9 bucks is insulting for a doughy pork taco with lettuce onions and tomato.
Best Austin Cookie
seconded. black golds and the marble cupcake are both way too good at upper crust.
An Austin Beer Thread
Glad to see chowhounds are fans of draughthouse.
Other places, "What Live Oak do you have on tap?" is always the first thing I ask. Hefeweizen and Pale Ale are the favorites and I will go places because they have it.
one Tex-Mex meal in Austin
curra's on oltorf, maybe polvo's on s. 1st.
el azteca is a good recommendation, too.
lulu b's:vietnamese sandwiches/snacks in 78704!
really enjoyed all the sandwiches i've tried there.
Kitchen Door
Have to agree with the final conclusion. Kitchen Door is a place i have been to a number of times but always for convenience rather than the food.
i'm still waiting on the trial of Uppercrust's marble cupcake.
Anybody tried cupcakes at Bountiful Bakery on Bee Caves?
i make special trips for the marble cupcake at uppercrust bakery. and the oatmeal muffin. which is not a cupcake.
Cheap, hidden ethnic (or not) eats?
el chilito has brought back the $2 taco and $4 burritos. pibil or daily specials recommended.
Great Rootbeer at Spec's
When Virgil's first showed up around here and was only available in the stopper bottles, it was bar none my favorite root beer ever. i recommended to anyone i though might appreciate it and got back nothing but bad reviews.
as soon as the 6 packs showed up the taste was totally different. watery with a hint of soap. being bought out would fit with my experience. no, the quality has not been maintained.
