Need restaurant/food shopping tips for 1 week in Paris with infant in apartment by Châtelet Metro Station
We're heading to Paris in July with our 3-month-old baby for a week in July (yes, will be there for Bastille Day). Looking for tips on where to eat with an infant as well as where to pick up groceries. We will be staying at an apartment with an American kitchen and plan to make quite a few meals in. The apartment is located in the 4th Arrondissment, a couple blocks from the Châtelet Metro station. We're willing to take public transportation to markets, etc. for groceries. Thanks!
Casual Breakfast without long wait in SF
I really like that place but there's always a long wait because it is tiny.
Do Calories on Menus Really Help?
I went to Baja Fresh for the first time in a long time yesterday and was shocked by the calorie content in their burritos. I opted for 2 fish tacos instead. I'm not a weight watcher but I find it disgusting that a burrito could contain that many calories. So....yes, I think requiring calories on the menu is a great idea. Maybe it'll get some of these chains to strategize on how to make healthier meals. I also think they should start advertising sodium content. I'm sure that info would be a shocker.
Wild Nettle and Pecorino Pizza at Pizzaiolo (Oakland)
I haven't that pizza in years but still consider it one of the best in the Bay.
Dine About Town (DAT), January 2011 -- REPORTS
I went to Town Hall for the DAT lunch. For lunch, you get a two-course meal. The choices were seafood chowder or a beet salad to start; and catfish or pork chop as the entree. All choices were on the regular menu but the catfush. I selected the beet salad and the pork chop. My friend selected the other two. My salad was very refreshing and delicious. It had an assortment of baby beets, mixed chicories, sliced pomelos and a sprinkling of goat cheese. It was enough (with some bread) to be a meal of its own. My friend enjoyed her chowder. I didn't try it because I don't like cream-based soups. We split the entrees. The catfish was phenomenal! It was perfectly cooked and the flavors were lovely. The pork chop was also very good, but I'm sure it would have been better if I wasn't already so stuffed. I liked that it was cooked all the way through (unlike Nopa's), yet still juicy and tender. I highly recommend Town Hall for a DAT lunch. Too bad they don't do DAT dinners.

ny foodie moving to peninsula. looking for best food events big or small... need shopping sugestions.
I moved to San Mateo last summer and am sad to report that the choices are somewhat disappointing (compared to SF, Berkeley and Santa Cruz). Since I lived near Downtown, I shopped a few times at the Downtown San Mateo Farmer's Market, which ran until October. Hopefully it returns this spring or summer (does anyone have the scoop??). It's small but had a decent array of organic veggies and fruit. Draeger's has decently priced chicken and is good for last minute groceries (I tend to avoid it otherwise because it's pretty expensive). I haven't tried their other meat products or seafood. I buy my seafood and pork at the Asian markets. Still have to check out a few of the places suggested by other Hounds.
As for events, I know the various cities have festivals in the summer and fall. I was bummed to miss the Italian Festival in San Mateo. I did make it to one...the San Carlos Wine & Beer Festival. There were a lot of food choices and lots of art booths. The wine and beer choices were sparse though. Nevertheless, I thought it was a nice event.
Looking for grocery store in San Mateo similar to Santa Cruz's Shopper's Corner or Staff of Life or SF's Rainbow
I shopped at Mollie Stone's a long time ago...when I was fresh out of college and a broke joke. Maybe the prices won't frighten me as much now. I will give it another try. I have heard wonderful things about the Milk Pail but was hoping for a more local grocery store. May have to venture down there to see what it's like though.

Awesome! Thank you!

I definitely shop at TJ's. Wish it had a better vegetable section though.

how sad. i also wish they would do the downtown farmer's market year round.
Looking for grocery store in San Mateo similar to Santa Cruz's Shopper's Corner or Staff of Life or SF's Rainbow
I haven't found any grocery store in San Mateo that is similar to Santa Cruz's Shopper's Corner or Staff of Life or SF's Rainbow. Basically, I'm looking for a decently priced* grocery store that has any or all of the following: (1) butcher counter with sustainable fish and organic meats; (2) bulk spices and flours; and (3) fresh and unique organic veggies. Does anyone know of such a place in the San Mateo area?
*By decently priced, I mean NOT Whole Foods or Draeger's prices. I can't stomach spending $4 on a celery stalk.
What's missing in SF?
If you're craving ramen, just head down to San Mateo....a few of them are much, much better the ramen joints in LA.
SF Hound in Town
I'll see if I can convince the sig other to go to Jean Georges on Friday. SOunds like a great deal!

I will definitely go to Momofuku. Sounds interesting. Would be interested in comparing it to some of our Asian fusion restaurants out here.
SF Hound coming to Brooklyn for long weekend
Thanks for the tip about Middle Eastern restaurants. Sadly, we have very few here in the Bay Area.

Will definitely go to Nathan's. I can't believe I've never been to Coney Island and at least one of the pizza joints.
Foods that are better made in SF than NYC?
Rasputin will put you down though, if you're not careful. It's a whopping 8.9% alcohol by volume. If you want something low in alcohol yet tasty, you should try the Bitter American at 21st Amendment Brewery. Speaking of which, stay away from the Watermelon Wheat. They've been brewing it out-of-state. If you order it at teh brewery, they pour the brew from a can into a pint. You can get that sort of experience by picking up a six pack at a liquor store in New Jersey (my friend found it there) and serving it up at home.

SF Hound in Town
Hi Manhattan Hounds! Husband and I are heading East to visit friends for a long weekend (Fri to Tues) in a couple weeks. We will be staying in Brooklyn. The only thing planned is Friday late night dinner at Babbo (super excited; missed it last time I was in town). Looking for recommendations for the following:
1. Can't miss cheap eats (example, if someone were coming to SF, I'd recommend heading to the Mission for a big, fat al pastor burrito at Taqueria Cancun).
2. Pizza - I love the thin and the thick so long as the sauce is dynamite! (I love Pizzaiolo in Berkeley but I also like North Beach Pizza).
3. Some hot dog place that is supposed to be amazing---where is it??
4. Reasonably priced ($15-20/entree) restaurant for dinner or lunch. French sounds good...we don't have many reasonably priced French around us (other than Fringale).
5. Great happy hour for Friday and Monday.
FYI, I've posted something similar on the Brooklyn board.

Restaurant around Geary & Market after First Thursday
Oddly enough, the Chronicle published an article about Gitane yesterday. We went there last night after checking out various galleries in the area. The vibe was harem-den'ish and fun, but it was too hot in there! I can't believe they did not have AC. Needless to say, the last thing I wanted to eat was the lamb. My friend and I shared the sardinas (sardines), camarones (prawns), and bacalla negre (black cod). Yes, very seafoody choices...we just went with what sounded good. In retrospect, I wish we had ordered a salad or meat dish. The sardines were tasty but the hearts of palm tasted like apples. I wish the dish was more savory. The prawns were a bit mushy and the flavors in that dish were not particularly memorable. The black cod, which came on a bed of quinoa, was outstanding! The sauce was so tasty that I had to lick the spoon. I will go back for the cod but not the other two dishes...and also on a cooler night. Service was a bit slow but not unbearably so. Thanks for the suggestion!

I work right by there. The food is good but the vibe is a bit chilly. I was thinking of a place with more nooks and crannies.
Restaurant around Geary & Market after First Thursday
My friend and I are going to check out a couple galleries for this week's First Thursday Art. Any suggestions for a place to grab a bite afterwards (probably around 7)? We went to Cafe Claude last time and loved it. I'm tempted to go back but do want to try something new. I've been to B44, Plouf and E&O so would not be interested in those either. Would prefer a recommendation for a restaurant within walking distance of Powell or Montgomery BART stations. Thanks!

Ramen Dojo
Just tried Ramen Dojo on Saturday. Wow. I knew it would be good when I saw the note stating: "Our soups are not vegetarian." You get a choice of 3 different kinds of broth: soy bean (miso), garlic pork, and something else (can't remember). Each bowl comes with 2 pieces of lean and absolutely delicious pork, and a cooked quail egg, and you can pay extra to add additional items such as pork, veggies, egg, etc. You can get your ramen mild, regular, or extra spicy. I selected garlic pork broth, etra spicy with the addition of napa cabbage and shitake. It was so delicious...too bad it was so spicy. I couldn't finish the broth because my mouth was on fire. Next time, I will go with regular spicy. According to my dining mates, the regular is quite spicy. I will definitely be back to try the other flavors and additions! My only gripe about this place is that it is extraordinarily expensive. A bowl of ramen is $8.95 and each additional item is between $1.50 to $3.00. Thus, with taxes and tip thrown in, you're talking about about $15 for a not very big bowl of ramen.

Inexpensive and impressive drinks or dinner
Mars Bar has great beer choices, a full bar, decent food a heated patio and is within walking distance of the ballpark.
sports bar with good food?
Too bad you're not a Steelers fan, or I'd recommend Giordano Bros., which serves the delicious Pittsburgh Primanti-style sandwiches. It's a fun PA-loving bar right in the heart of North Beach. I bet they'll be showing the PSU game.
Pete's Tavern on King does have the NFL ticket. It's a huge sports bar with decent food. If you are willing to wander over to the East Bay, Berkeley's Pyramid Brewery & Alehouse a good place for college and pro football. The food is better there and they have great beers on tap. Finally, there's Harry's Bar in the Marina. They have the ticket and multiple TV's. Food's not bad.

Best Bay Area bagels?
My favorite bagel place in the area is Bagelry in Santa Cruz. Love their sesame with just a bit of butter. Also love the egg salad spread on a whole wheat bagel there.
ABC Bakery Cafe.
Just went for the first time this past weekend. The bathroom stinks. Don't they realize that if their bathrooms are nasty, you wonder how clean their kitchen and your dishes are? Yuck. My parents and I had soup noodles. I got the special seafood noodle soup. The broth was nice, not much by way of seafood at all, and wayyy too much noodles. My parents finished their soup noodles and seemed pleased enough. We also shared the preserved duck egg congee. Quite tasty. Hubby got a pork baked in some orange sauce that was on the house specials list. It looked disgusting and he barely touched it.
