Anyone seen fresh fiddleheads in Calgary?
I saw them at the Strathcona Sobeys today.
Ruth's chia goodness
They sell 2-3 varieties of Ruth's chia goodness at Superstore in the gluten-free/organic aisle.
Good places for lunch around Jasper and 104 Street , Edmontoin
What about something like the Drift food truck on 108 St & 100 Ave - across from IBM? I was in Edmonton for a work trip about a month ago and really enjoyed their jerk chicken sandwich.

I picked up some beet greens at the Millarville Farmers' Market about a month ago.
ISO meyer lemons in YYC
I've seen them with the organic fruit at the Strathcona Sobeys. I don't remember the price though.
Where are the best fresh oysters in Calgary???
I love the oysters at Big Fish. I always go on Mondays when they have 2 for 1 oysters on.

Coffee Yogurt in Calgary
I've picked up the Liberte mocha at Sobeys in mid-size containers (500ml?), and in larger containers at Superstore (750 ml?) in their natural foods aisle.
Wurst - Calgary German Beer Haus
They have more info on their facebook page: http://www.facebook.com/WurstCalgary#!/WurstCalgary?sk=info
It sounded very promising when I saw the ad in City Palate, but I'm a bit thrown off by this statement on their facebook page:
Although you'll find tributes to Bavarian food on our menu, we think you'll find we're far from traditional. Our chefs have put their own twist on European brasserie fare featuring charcuterie, fresh fish, Alberta bone-in tenderloin, rotisserie half-chicken and a raw seafood bar brimming with oysters, Dungeness crab, Atlantic lobster and scallops. Much like restaurants throughout Bavaria, our culinary team uses fresh ingredients from local producers whenever possible and absolutely everything, right down to the condiments, are made and prepared in-house.
Oyster bar?? I don't know how that fits in with the German theme.
Bulk Barn Opening Soon in Calgary
I finally made it to Bulk Barn on Friday afternoon. There were quite a few people in there, but there was no lineup, so it didn't take long to pay and get out of there. I was happy to find lots of raw nuts/seeds as well as some harder to find bulk ingredients like millet, hulled hemp seed, panko, israeli couscous, chia seeds, spelt flakes, etc. I know that I've paid a lot more for similar ingredients at Community/Planet Organic. Was really impressed with the prices as well. For example, steel cut oats were 13 cents/100g.
New pizza place - owned by Sugo
Went last week with a friend. We shared the house-marinated olives (yum!) and the parma and hogwild pizzas. Loved the crust at Without Papers, as it was nice and crisp but not tough. We both thought that the crust was better than Una. We both enjoyed the parma pizza - toppings were nice and fresh. Will definitely go back for that one! The hogwild was a different story. Although the concept sounded good, it was waaay too salty. Both of us ended up drinking a lot of water to try to get through it. We'd hoped to try the shroom pizza, but apparently they were sold out. Will definitely head back to try that one out and see how it compares to the mushroom pizza at Una!
Poutine Crawl - YYC
Interesting concept, but I'm not sure if I could handle that much poutine in one day!
Beignets in Calgary?
Even though they aren't included on their dessert menu, our table of 4 ordered them separately as we love beignets. At first we were confused and wondering if they had a custard inside, but we quickly realized that they were actually raw. The waitress quickly whisked them away and had the kitchen make us new ones. The new order included a bigger portion for us, but agree that they needed more sugar and wildflower honey.
Bulk Barn Opening Soon in Calgary
Great! Now I won't have to make special trips while I'm in Edmonton.
Boxwood (Calgary)
I went to Boxwood yesterday with a friend for lunch. The place was very busy, but it only took ~15 mins to get a table for 2. My friend really enjoyed her chickpea fritter & roasted eggplant sandwich, but my roasted farm chicken sandwich was just ok. The aioli on the sandwich was really nice and the chicken was very tender, but I wish that the chicken had more seasoning. I do plan to go back to try the porchetta sandwich and some of the sides.
Poutine in YYC?
How disappointing! I wonder if they were having a bad day in the kitchen or maybe have new staff. It does sound like they changed a few things, because I'd never been served the super skinny fries, and definitely had more than 4-5 curds.
I do want to try La Belle Patate in Canmore. A friend and I tried to go there in July, but we arrived before they'd opened and we had to get back to Calgary.
Kayne's (17 Ave) Calgary
Yeah, I've had the weekend brunch. Their frittata was pretty good but their sides are pretty blah. Too much 'brown' stuff on the plate for my liking, and they didn't have jam/pb/etc for the toast.
Kayne's (17 Ave) Calgary
Kayne's is a regular hangout for me and my friends. Don't let the dingy exterior deter you! The interior is really nice and comfortable. I've gone for lunch there several Saturday afternoons and have been surprised that it isn't that busy inside. I think they're much busier in the evenings and/or when there is some sort of sports event on (since they have so many tvs).
They always have one of their own beers on special. Angry bald man is one that we enjoy. My favorite menu item is definitely their flatiron steak sandwich. Menu is here: http://www.kaynes.com/index.php/site/menu/
Poutine in YYC?
I love the poutine at District. The best part is that they have a menu board with additional toppings you can add onto the 'plain' poutine.

'Canadian Food' Experience in Calgary/Edmonton/Banff?
Sweeterpea & howlin - Thanks for the museum suggestion. I'll pass that along!
'Canadian Food' Experience in Calgary/Edmonton/Banff?
Foodkarma - Elk/Bison/Venison dishes are all great suggestions. Also, to clarify the banh mi Canadian thing - although it isn't unique to Canada, I haven't seen/heard of the satay version outside of Calgary. (Or maybe I wasn't looking?)
'Canadian Food' Experience in Calgary/Edmonton/Banff?
Odee - Thanks for the Edmonton recs. Pemmican burger sounds interesting - I might have to try that the next time I'm in Edmonton.
Scary Bill - Lots of great suggestions! Good call on the montreal smoked meat & beef shack. I've been meaning to go to the beef shack so this is a great excuse to go.
'Canadian Food' Experience in Calgary/Edmonton/Banff?
Thanks for pointing to the other threads! They arrive on March 26th so it doesn't seem like we'll be able to go to Forage.
'Canadian Food' Experience in Calgary/Edmonton/Banff?
A friend has asked me for suggestions on what to feed or where to take 2 women from Germany who have never been to Canada before to experience 'Canadian' food in Calgary. They'll also be heading to Edmonton and Banff during their 2 week stay.
These are the food items we could think of that are unique to Canada and some of the potential restaurants/locations where they could try the foods:
-Montreal style Bagels (Montreal Bagels on Elbow Drive)
-Poutine (District or Laurier Lounge)
-Saskatoons (I can make a pie)
-Maple syrup (easy enough to make breakfast at home)
-Other French Canadian specialties? (Sugar pie, etc)?
Any other suggestions? I don't know these individuals personally so I'm not sure if they'd appreciate some of the food items that maybe have a Canadian spin to them. If you have ideas along those lines please share. For example, ginger beef is a type of chinese food only found in Canada. I haven't seen items like satay beef/chicken bánh mì outside of Calgary either.
The women are in university so we're looking for reasonably priced options in the cities mentioned.

I noticed Concorde when I was at Blush Lane on Monday. Any new reports on this place?
