Whatever happened to Che Grill & Market?

Thanks in advance.

vegetarian-friendly places (sf/peninsula)

Try Vegetarian House in San Jose. Not fancy, but good food (even for those of us that are not veggie-inclined).

Dine About Town, Downtown SJ - anyone try any of the 26 restaurants thru 6/13/09?

We went to Habana Cuba. With a party of four, we tried all of the offerings:

Prix Fixe Menu Price: $20 per person

First Course

Yuca Frita & Tostones Combo
Plantain Chips & Salsa
Papas Rellenas with Yuca Frita

Second Course

Lechon a la Cubana
Ropa Vieja
Pechuga de Pollo a la Plancha

Third Course

Flan
Arroz con Leche
Tres Leches

They also offered a tamal as fourth alternative for the second course. It was the least interesting of the four. Not much more than masa.

Overall, the food was OK, but nothing special. Not very tasty.

My granddaughter had recently returned from a month-long trip to Ecuador, so she was excited about the plantains and the yucca. Again, they were just OK.

The restaurant was half to two-thirds full, and the service was friendly, but again, nothing special.

We won't be back for a long while (until we can forget this unimpressive meal).

Crispy Carnitas??

I tried the carnitas plate at the MV location of La Bamba, based solely on these recommendations (because the place looks like a dive). The carnitas were wonderful, both tasty and crispy. The best that I have found in the South Bay and/or peninsula.

Gyros in South Bay

I like Joe the Greek Cafe. They serve the typical gyro, But I eat the gyro as a platter, without the pita bread, and with a Greek salad.

Very nice.

Father's Day Brunch in South Bay

ceekskat-

Wow, thanks for all the help. Great ideas.

The Fairmont has a regular Sunday Brunch, but I haven't heard back from them if there is anything special being done for Father's Day.

Another one that I found is the Hayes Mansion. They don't show it on their website yet, but the manager said that they will have a special Father's Day Brunch and BBQ.

Again, thank you for all the ideas.

Father's Day Brunch in South Bay

Folks-

Does anyone have a good restaurant in the South Bay to suggest for a Father's Day brunch. We will have a group of 12 or so, with some kids. Price is not a big deal. Close to SJ airport would be good, but is not a must.

Thoughts?

Thanks in advance.

How to get Synsepalum dulcificum -- Miracle fruit

Sarah-

Your best bet is to get the fruit shipped to you. They are costly, and don't stand up to much travel, so they should be overnighted. Eat them quickly.

I tried to buy both plants and seeds (to grow). Neither survived the San Jose weather.

I found a company in Japan that sells an extract of Miracle Fruit in tablet form. That is OK.

Good luck,

An "Ace of Cakes" style bakery in the South Bay?

Folks-

I saw a message on a Los Angeles Chowhound board which elicited the names of a number of local bakeries that make cakes in the flamboyant style of the Food Network's "Ace of Cakes".

I would like to find such a bakery in the South Bay, or at least within a reasonable delivery distance of San Jose. Do you have any recommendations?

Thanks in advance.
