Best charcuterie - retail?

Moody's in Waltham. Formaggio does some of their own stuff.

Abe and Louie's.

I have a few hundred dollars in gift cards there. How should I use them? A side of French fries and a big pricey bottle of red?

Seriously though-- any particular steaks there that rise above their others?

Boneless Veal Shoulder

Try Fresh Pond Market on Huron Ave. If they don't have it, they should be able to get it in fairly short order.

My Grillo pickle mystery

katzzz, your post epitomizes why I love chowhound. Excellent sleuthing. I've found variance in grillo's pickles myself, but haven't associated it with "fridge-aging". Some batches just seem tangier.

BBQ Catering?

Tennessee Barbecue in Quincy does catering. We've used them a few times in recent years for a group that is about two-thirds carnivore and one-third vegetarian.

Moody's Delicatessen and Provisions

With all due respect, meow, I think it's unfair to judge their sandwiches so harshly when sampled as take out.

Going to be near Chinatown this evening with my kiddo and would like to grab an early dinner of dumplings. Top rec's?

Surprisingly good/bad coffee

The coffee at Darwin's, for all their hoop-de-doo about it, is really dreadful.

Pubs with cool fireplaces

The James Gate in Jamaica Plain. And while the food is only moderately good, the bar at The Red House in Harvard Square has a lovely little fireplace niche with three or four tables. You'll feel like you're in a Vermont inn.

Rooster Sauce

Rooster sauce=Sriracha. A judge in California ruled that the plant produces noxious fumes and therefore Sriracha must halt production.

Best NY Style Pizza

Former New Yorker here myself. So you mean thin pies, manhole cover size, gotta fold the slice in half? Hard to find but I will say that Armando's in Cambridge reminds me of the NY pies of my childhood.

Fresh pita bread - where to get in Somerville / Cambridge?

The Middle Eastern shops along Mt Auburn Street in Watertown (right over the Cambridge line) are one option. You can find out what the delivery days are at Arax or Massis, to name a couple.

Current taco situation in the area looking for a great taco

An Israeli friend says just about anything can be rolled up in pita and called shawarma.

We Love a Lobster (and roll) as well as the next person, but are they overrated?

You forgot to describe the cooking pot itself-- don't you have your great-great uncle Josiah's pewter kettle that he brought from the Scottish highlands in 1894?

We Love a Lobster (and roll) as well as the next person, but are they overrated?

Here's a bad idea: a lobster roll entirely made of the slender bottom pincer meat of the non-dominant claw. Only on Portlandia, perhaps.

The original "knuckle sandwich", eh? Just last night as I was making some Alive and Kicking bugs into homemade rolls, I was imagining an all-knuckle lobster roll too...

Here's a good answer to the Pilgrim/lobster question, created by the folks at Plimoth Plantation: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RCTcH0...

Shrimp question

OP here... It definitely wasn't styrofoam-- that was just an analogy I used to describe the appearance of the stuff. As Thimes says above-- it was definitely biological in nature. I did clean and eat them, and they were just fine. There was also a lot more of it than I'd expect to see were it immature roe. Still a mystery!

Shrimp question

In my many years of peeling, deveining and cooking shrimp, I've never seen what I saw tonight: what is it?

Mixed in with the black intestinal goop was a whitish, firm substance that almost looked like tiny styrofoam balls-- but it was clearly part of the shrimp. Only a couple of the shrimp had this. One had a little bit, and the other a fair amount, running along the whole vein canal

Thoughts?

Not a gyro, but I think Amsterdam Falafel will put fries in your sandwich.
