pho in Cambridge

Nope. Whenever I want pho within walking distance, I go to Sapporo for ramen instead. Not the same itch, but close enough...

Cambridge - need a place for drinks before dinner

The Abbey is across the street, down about two blocks.

Banh Mi at Pho House

Got the bbq beef banh mì tonight and found it slightly better than meh. It's oddly sweet-- the pickling on the daikon and carrot is sugary and the cuke spears didn't seem to have much flavor. The beef itself was good, but the bread was a lightly grilled, pillowy soft roll to start with-- no real crunch or chew to it. Fine overall, but a league or three away from Banh Mì Ba Le on Dorchester, which remains my standby.

Has anyone seen Peanut Chews locally?

My favorite. Last I knew they had gone back to the original Goldenbergs packaging. I've never had much luck finding them locally.

Banh Mi at Pho House

It's on Mass Ave, closer to Porter than to Harvard.

Banh Mi at Pho House

Very happy to hear that I can now get a banh mi in Cambridge. That's a long standing missing element here.

Legal Sea Foods Prudential closing?

Can anyone offer a decent theory on why Legal allows such inconsistency from one location to the next?

All-time best dessert?

The almond semifreddo at the short-lived but brilliant Benatti in Inman Square.

Day trip from Boston

Yes-- and the redcoats only had unicycles. Advantage, colonials.

Finally, Mary Chung: order what?

Thanks, Slim. I was hoping you'd chime in all concise like that!

Finally, Mary Chung: order what?

Somehow, after 15 years of eating across Boston, I've never made it to Mary Chung. What are the classic dishes there?

Moody's banh mi

I'm usually a Dorchester Ave banh mi guy, but this is the second time I've had the Moody's version and it's just a thing a beauty, hounds.

You Are My Gyro: Mindblowing sandy at Ma Magoo's

Taralli gave the link-- Esperia has a pork version which is a little harder to come by in the world of shawarma/gyro.

You Are My Gyro: Mindblowing sandy at Ma Magoo's

On swank's swoony report, I tried the sandwich at Mama Goo's tonight. It is a gyro loaf version, with slices grilled to order instead of carved off a spit. Soft pita, cukes and dilly yogurt sauce. Tomatoes were better than the sub shop usual. I'll take Farm Grill and Esperia over Mama Goo's, but theirs is a solid rendition of the "gyro from a kit" genre.

H Mart Open in Central Square!

Yeah, on second thought maybe Spam is a good thing to miss out on. It's amazing how an American military presence in a country leaves such a dreadful culinary legacy.

El Centro: Awful. Boston, terrible food city.

Slim, there's just no way to compare Boston cruel service to New York cruel service. If I really want to experience cruelty, I go to New York. I've given up on it here in Boston.

Abe and Louie's.

I have a few hundred dollars in gift cards there. How should I use them? A side of French fries and a big pricey bottle of red?

Seriously though-- any particular steaks there that rise above their others?

Try Fresh Pond Market on Huron Ave. If they don't have it, they should be able to get it in fairly short order.

My Grillo pickle mystery

katzzz, your post epitomizes why I love chowhound. Excellent sleuthing. I've found variance in grillo's pickles myself, but haven't associated it with "fridge-aging". Some batches just seem tangier.

Tennessee Barbecue in Quincy does catering. We've used them a few times in recent years for a group that is about two-thirds carnivore and one-third vegetarian.
