La Cabana Antioquena in Tampa....

Here's a long thread on the topic of Tampa Bay Mexican restaurants. The Taco Bus should be near the top of any list:

http://chowhound.chow.com/topics/522640?tag=search_results;results_list
and a roundup, though not an exhaustive list, from the Times:

http://www.tampabay.com/features/food/restaurants/tampa-bay-taquerias-overflow-with-subtleties-in-tacos/1110081

And here's a link to a modest place in Pinellas Park:

Happy hunting.

Bern's : What to order?

Not anymore. The tanks are gone. They still serve fish, but they aren't swimming in the kitchen.

Bern's : What to order?

The Delmonico is my favorite cut at Bern's; it's the most flavorful, imho. The size and thickness are up to you, but I usually try to restrain myself with an 8 oz cut to save room for other dishes, such as the excellent steak tartare, the outstanding lobster bisque (even though onion soup comes with the meal, along with a salad, where I usually go for the garlicky Cleopatra dressing) and, of course, a visit to the dessert room, where I lean chocolate. I usually try to work in some Turkish coffee at the end, partly because it's something you don't find at many restaurants. Be sure to take the tour!

St Pete Beach next week.

I agree about John's Pass Village, with one exception - Walt'z Fish Shack. It has some of the freshest fish you'll find at the beach and excellent boiled shrimp. Definitely worth checking out, but get there before they run out of fish.

Thanksgiving (And in general) in St. Pete.

Not sure about Thanksgiving, but Walt'z Fish Shack fits the definition of funky hole in the wall with good food. It's in Madeira Beach, at the southern end of John's Pass Village. Same for Dockside Dave's, up Gulf Blvd. a ways in Madeira; excellent grouper and onion rings.

Dim Sum in Tampa?

I love China Yuan, but for dim sum I prefer TC Choy's, especially on Sundays. The carts add to the experience, there are lots of choices and everything tastes fresh. It's more expensive than CY but worth it, imho, and a lot closer to SPB than CY....

Must try from Tampa airport on route to St Pete Beach?

Strongly recommend Mazarro's. It's on the way, right off the interstate on 22nd Ave N, and has terrific sandwiches, along with lots of Italian grocery choices you can take with you. And once you get to the beach, you might not want to leave! You didn't say what day you arrive, so check the hours first.

One Day/Night in Tampa - give me your best suggestions!

Your instincts are right about Oystercatchers, though Armani in the same hotel is also top-notch if like Italian. A little father away is Roy's, which is lively and very good (sure,it's a chain but who cares?). Or there are a a lot of places to choose from at International Plaza or Wetstshore mall. You'll need cabs for most of these. Guppy's is too far and Cafe Ponte is across the bay and would be a costly cab ride (cab fares are pretty steep around Tampa).

Ted Peters in Saint Petersburg

I agree UK, and have to wonder about chowhound when 10-year-old posts get recycled like this. There's another example displayed prominently on the board about Bern's - labeled a warning based on a single visit from a diner 10 years ago. Kinda silly.

Treasure Island

You might try Ocean Breeze, which is in St. Pete Beach but just over the Blind Pass Bridge overlooking the intracoastal and Treasure Island. It's my go-to place and I live at TI. Nice setting, outdoor dining on the deck, lots of choices, including Tapas. I agree with the VIP recommendation, if you don't mind eating in a bar at lunchtime and limit yourself to the pork in green chile or the guacamole, which is about as good as you'll get around here.

Silas Dents, Treasure Island

But now it's called Silas Steakhouse and is set back from Gulf Boulevard in a shopping center. If my fuzzy memory from 30 years ago serves, Silas Dent's was right on the road and was more casual.

I'm dying to go. Here's a recent review from the St. Pete Times: http://www.tampabay.com/features/food...
I hear it can be hard to get a table weekend nights....

Where is the best no frills Seafood in all of Florida?

Try Walt'z Fish Shack in Madeira Beach. It's surrounded by tourist traps in John's Pass Village, but it's what you say you are looking for - fresh, simply prepared seafood favored by locals, served in a converted cottage painted Caribbean colors. Dinner only, no tables bigger than four-tops and a menu that changes with whatever Walt gets on the dock that day (the menu is a chalk board, and the chalk-out items as they run out).

Staying in St Petes, looking for top chow places to eat at ?

Try searching for St. Petersburg. You'll find lots of stuff. No such thing as St. Petes.

Spectacular Burger today at this new place in Carrollwood in Tampa...

Best burger I've had was at Panne Rustica, but not sure it's always on the menu, but no fires. Had a pretty good burger and fries at Cassis recently, with caramelized and and a fried egg, sunny side up.

Seeking St. Petes/St. Petes Beach recs: NOT the usual ones, however

A new place in St. Pete Beach worth checking out is Ocean Breeze, on Blind Pass road overlooking the Blind Pass Bridge (almost Treasure Island). The new owners have completely renovated and updated the old and tired Mulligan's along with the menu. Great tapas menu - everything is $8 - and lively atmosphere. Had some terrific fresh fish the other night as a special, with shrimp. And a tapas of fall-of-the-bone ribs. Terrific place, good value.

Big John's Alabama BBQ (Tampa)

That's outsanding! And in more Big John's news: the grand reopening of the new 40th St. store Jan. 30! From Laura's blog:

Hope they keep the S Tampa spot too!

Where are the good Mexican restaurants in Tampa Bay area?

La Cabana del Tio is my personal fave (it also won Creative Loafing's best taco competition) in Clearwater.

A Weekend of eating in St. Pete

My wife and I were at Diner 437 Saturday night too! Terrific place. Had a great rib eye, awesome spinach, very good cauliflower soup. Was underwhelmed by the duck fat fries though; tasted like regular ol' thin-cut fries to me. I wasn't sure they were even fresh potatoes, but they assured me they were. We sat at the counter and found it very entertaining. The chef is very animated, offered us some of the leftover beets you apparently had for lunch, and a taste of the chopped chicken liver. I'll be back, because I want to try the lobster BT sandwich!

Sure hope so. They have my vote for best BBQ (though I've never had Ribdog's Q so this is only a slightly informed opinion).

Excellent Banh Mi in St. Petersburg

I'm a tad obsessed with the Vietnamese sandwich, Banh Mi. Have had excellent Banh Mi in NYC and Toronto, but not much around Tampa Bay - until now.

A little place on U.S. 19 called Thuy Cafe is serving up myriad kinds of freshly made Banh Mi, which if you aren't familiar is served on french bread and made with cilantro, cucumber, shredded carrot, shredded daikon radish, spicy peppers (in this case, sliced jalapenos instead of Thai), some sort of secret sauce, along with meat. It hits so many flavor notes it's amazing.

The classic Banh Mi has pate and Vietnamese ham, but other ingredients include grilled pork, meat balls and chicken. I've been to Thuy Cafe twice now, and both times they have been pretty empty, so I hope people start going so it stays open! It's a pretty slick looking place, just a couple of tables and some couches and coffee tables, so it's more like a coffee house atmosphere (with a flat screen TV that was showing a Beyonce concert video, go figure). The menu has two items - Banh Mi and BoBa tea. So at least it's not confusing! And it's cheap: $3.50 for a sandwich, though that's expensive by Banh Mi standards - which usually go for about $2. Still a bargain, though.

Iconic Tampa Bay restaurants

Laura Reiely, the restaurant critic for the St. Petersburg Times, has a list of 25 iconic restaurants that are at least 25 years old: http://www.tampabay.com/features/food.... The only real glaring omission, imho, is Mise en Place, though it might be under 25. Otherwise an excellent list and a fun time debating them.
And I can't believe I had never heard of, much less ever visited, Biff-Burger. What other worthy restos were left off the list?

Real Mexican food - Tampa

This is great to hear. My wife grew up in Carlsbad, so I know what you mean about the food there. Agave's chie relleno reminds me of the ones I've had in NM. The VIP Lounge also has good food, on Treasure Island. Red Mesa in St. Petersburg is really the only southwestern/New Mexico restaurant in the area. Sadly, no sopapillas like the ones I first had at the Cortez in Carlsbad. Yum!

mcsheridan, where'd you get it? Because I haven't a clue where you would go for that in the St. Pete area but would love to know!

St. Pete next week

The best oysters by far are at Guppy's in Indian Rocks. they're prime grade and reasonably priced. Worth the drive from Treasure Island. The rest of the food is top-notch too.

Wahoo's, a relatively new place in Treasure Island, makes a pretty good Cuban, and they use their own smoked roast pork, which is different.

Dockside Dave's, with locations in Madeira and St. Pete Beach, has a great grouper sandwich and excellent onion rings. But the best grouper I've had in many years was at Waltz Fish Shack recently at John's Pass Village. The freshest fish, excellent shrimp, casual atmosphere, reasonable prices ($15-$20 entres). Call first; they close when they run out of fish!

Where's Latitudes?

Chicken fried chicken - Tampa Bay area?

Hey, RibDog, you're right it's been a while. The economy's turned me into a penny pincher, and reading posts I about restaurants wasn't fun. But it's time to get back at it. Speaking of which, I believe we were both big fans of the late great Palios friend chicken in Tampa. Sadly nothing's replaced it in my mind. I paused before posting on this thread because I wasn't sure what our German friend here meant by chicken friend chicken. Could be a translation thing, but I wondered if they might be looking for something closer to chicken fried steak.

Chicken fried chicken - Tampa Bay area?

I highly recommend the Chattaway in St. Petersburg. It's best known for great hamburgers, but their fried chicken may be better. I agree with others, Busch Gardens and Heilman's in Clearwater are great choices. Not sure the Chattaway has mashed potatoes, and I know they don't have greens. Maybe Atwater's in St. Petersburg, a soul food institution.
