New Orleans next week. Looking for something new.
Thanks for taking time to report. Think about Green Goddess next time------and you'll not be disappointed by Dante's, either
Ted's Frostop(s) near Tulane??
This is one of the stranger re-animated zombie threads in a while....I'll be in that neighborhood next month, and'll give it a go. Report to follow.
Going to New Orleans for our 1st wedding anniversary
it is NOT too late to cancel.....unless mediocre food in a 'quite nice' garden is your aim.
Follow up after help from Chowhound asking for NOLA recs
Thanks for the post/llink, I'd been waiting to hear from you. Glad you feel the goodness of the Green Goddess....and Surrey's ! Well done. It's been noted that Eliz.'s praline bacon is truly the crack of (breakfast) foods. Just so. Come back.
Fresh baked bread
I'd pay special attetion to HC's recommendations, as there're v.few more serious students of bread. 'Nuff said.
LA Hound returning for annual visit, advice sought.
Couldn't agree more. Additionally, Chris's selection of and recommendations for some super wines is a big plus. Good selection of Adriatic wines, a chef who really responds to those who're interested in his work/tastes/likes and very capable mixers of some imaginative cocktails......do you begin to sense my enthusiasm ?
Love food - seeking out low key 'local' favourites
For an off-the-beaten-path coffee shop that is as welcoming as your neighbo(u)r's kitchen, try First Cup Cafe just (1 1/2 blocks) lakeside (think 'north') of Claiborne Ave. on Calhoun St. Put your well-being into Mo's hands and all will be well.
Hide your BBQ shrimp! Kukubura's coming back to town!
With no disrespect to Dante's (which we've enjoyed every time we've been), I think GG would be the way to go; outside-the-norm drinks, dishes and wines. Hardly the most glamorous of settings, but time spent talking w/ Chef Chris can lead to some one-off treats. Best news is that you win whichever you choose
What to bring back from New Orleans
At any grocery get Tony's (reg., salt-free). Repeat: Tony's
Heading Back To New Orleans: Ponderosa Stomp at Howlin Wolf
First Cup Cafe on Calhoun St., a block lakeside of Claiborne, pours consistently fine and carefully brewed coffees and teas (hot/cold). Great drinks, lovely setting, friendly people.
Need to choose between Ralph's on the Park, Clancy's or Brigtstens

First time in New Orleans - have three days - hidden gem suggestions?
have a lunch @ Sammy's on Elysian Fields, just lakeside of the 610 interchange - purely home-cookin' in quantity at reasonable rates. (I'm loopy for the seafood/mirliton soup)
Please: Help me find five great meals on a budget in NOLA
Poppa's Seafood is on Galvez in the 9th, Sammy's on Elysian Fields just lakeside of the 610 interchange is top-notch.

Help with dinners!
Coquette, Dante's Kitchen, Stella!, Boucherie; and Hazelhurst's recommendations are dis-regarded at one's own peril.

Stella suggestions?
thanks for the prompt review.....so we'll take it that you liked it ?
Stella suggestions?
Wife and I went last month - opted for the chef's tasting menu, which was/is without equal. The 7 scheduled courses turn into 10, what with amuse bouches and other lagniappes, and each is a eye and mouth treat of the 1st degree. This menu gives room for real appreciation of the chef's/kitchen's talents. As would, I supose, any single choices. Methinks one cannot go wrong @ Stella!
Sammy's
Sammy's consistently delivers solid, staple fare, as you note. I'm loopy for the seafood/mirliton soup when it's on-menu (the large may be my "best buy"). On a side note, thank you for using "crisp" as a descriptor instead of the (anathema-to-me) 'crispy'. (While I'm tall, I've never been 'tally".)
SPICIEST food in New Orleans!
I may need help w/ the adjective, but it seems that might've been the Guiding Star - or are we talkin' 2 different joints, 'cause I remember GS being on the divided road
(US90) right near the 14/90 intersection. Pepper mash'd help you locate any and all minor cuts or nicks you hadn't realized were there.
What's your favorite low key breakfast place?

Flaming Torch
During (at least) six visits over the past 2 yrs., my dining compaions (as many as 6) and I have never been disappointed. Fin, feather, leather and salads--'ve all been most satisfactory. It's not chic or glitzy (nor does it aim to be), just reliable. A solid B, or a 'par'.
7 dinners, how did I do with my choices?
and we thank him for his fastidious report.....
Very Brief Trip Report
While I agree that most of your choices make nice 'mouth music', I just don't get the thin sliced catfish. Was there last month, had the signature dish, and regard it as ho-hum. Your other selections all embrace and display the essesnces of their ingredients. Yes, it's comfort food and a cultural instititution, and I'm prepared to be beat about the head and ears for blasphemy, but it was a 'lost meal' for me.
Galvez
We went shortly after opening and then again 2 mos. ago. Consistently underwhelming across the board. Not 'bad', but sorely lacking.
