Suggestions for post wedding Cuban breakfast for 25 in Miami?

Hi! We're hosting guests from out of town for a family wedding this coming weekend. About 25 of us would like to have breakfast somewhere on Sunday morning. We've polled our guests and most want to go somewhere like Versailles or La Carreta. Any other suggestions of places that serve similar breakfast (typical fare would have to be Cuban toast with Cafe con Leche, etc.) in the Miami/Coral Gables area? It would have to be family friendly as there will be 5 or 6 kids, ages 6 and under. Thanks in advance for your suggestions!

Cup Cakes in Miami

Hi! Depends on where you will be staying - If you're in the South Miami/Coral Gables area, then I would HIGHLY recommend Sugar Mama in Coral Gables (94 Miracle Mile Coral Gables, FL 33134 - (305) 774-0114) or LA Sweets (The Shops at Sunset Place, 5701 Sunset Drive, Suite 152, Miami, FL 33143, (305) 665-5288). Both of these have consistently good cupcakes and lots of variety.

Wedding Cake Bakery - South Miami or the Keys

I have a recommendation but it's not a bakery. There's a pastry chef in town that's been doing all of my cakes and she does a beautiful (and delicious) job. Her name is Michelle Arthur Cabrera. If you email her directly she can provide you with more information: michelle_ac3@hotmail.com. Everything she's done for my friends and for me has been extraordinary so I'm sure she can come up with something perfectly tailored to your needs.

Lunch between Midway Airport and Michigan

Thanks for the insight as to the location. We want something quick where we can sit down to eat and then go someplace for the kids to run around before getting on the road. Is there food inside Millenium Park?

Lunch between Midway Airport and Michigan

Hi! My husband, preschoolers and I are traveling to Michigan to visit family. We're flying into Chicago Midway and are driving to Michigan around lunchtime. On our way, we wanted to stop to have lunch and maybe let them run around a bit. Going to Millenium Park seemed ideal but I'm not sure if that's on our way or in the opposite direction or if there is food nearby. We would love someplace other than fast food places. Any suggestions of nice places we can have lunch with the kids en route to Michigan? We're actually staying a few days in Magnificent Mile and I'm looking forward to it after all I've read on this board. Thanks for your any suggestions you can give!

Mr. Chow South Beach

I'm glad you wrote about this because my friends and I chose between Mr. Chow and Hakassan this weekend and we went to Hakassan instead. I was not impressed. We made reservations for 10 p.m. (which for us is late). The server didn't come to us until at least 10:30, and we didn't eat until 11:30. The service was not great in that regard. There were 4 of us, we shared two appetizers, got four main plates to share and two side dishes to share. Sans drinks/wine/tip, we paid $330 for the food alone. The food was tasty, but nothing to write home about and the service was not worth the $60 they tacked on for gratuity. We will not be returning. I would be much happier spending that same amount at Gotham.

Cupcakes in Miami?

Hi! My husband and I recently went to Cool de Sac in Sunset Shops with our kids and after we left were looking for something sweet to eat. Just downstairs is a cupcake place called LA Sweets. It was absolutely fabulous. We each got a mini cupcake and all of the cupcakes tasted fresh. The frosting was nice and soft, not hard. It seemed like the owner is really on top of baking and frosting throughout the day, rather than baking/frosting the night before like I've heard other places do. AND (I know this is going to make me sound dorky) she has board games to play, such as Scrabble, so you can go there and have a fun family night. I love playing board games.

Villa Italia on Coral Way

That place is called Caffe Italia. Our office staff orders from there on occasion and the food is consistently good. They also have very fast delivery, although we are aware they are pretty busy.

I have two small kids (preschoolers) and we go to Bugattu on occasion. My husband and I love the food and it's loud enough that the kids don't interrupt anyone else's dinner. Also the portions are big so we share our food with the kids.

Best restaurants in Naples- NYer coming for vacation

My husband and I took a little get away trip to Naples for my husband's birthday this weekend. We stayed at the Naples Hilton (fantastic!) and went to Roy's for dinner. The concierge at the Hilton, Hope Haworth, recommended we go there and made reservations for us. I know it's a chain. But. The. Food. Was. Fabulous. The restaurant is known for serving "Hawaiian fusion" foods and seafood. http://www.roysrestaurant.com.

We shared the "Roy's Canoe Appetizer for Two" which had a little scrumptuous bit of everything. Then my husband had the snapper (it was a special) and I had Roy's Classic Trio which included a small serving of three classics: salmon with a ponzu sauce (delicious, sweet and light), Hawaiian style butterfish with a lemon-butter sauce; and the blackened ahi with a slightly spicy mustard butter sauce. I loved them all, although I couldn't finish them all!

For desert we had their FLOURLESS chocolate souffle. I'm a desert lover and I could have had a second one of these. Just delicious. The service was fantastic. We had constant water/wine refills and at the end of the meal, we asked the waitress a question about another desert and she actually brought us a sample! We loved it and we can't wait to return!

Dine-Around in South Miami

We wound up not doing a true dine-around because it was sprinkling, and then it started raining, etc.

We went to Cafe Pastis for dinner, walked around a bit, and when it started raining again, we stopped at Town for an after-dinner drink and desert.

It was actually our third or fourth time at Pastis but we had to go back after you reminded me of it! The food was delicious as it has always been the times we've been, we barely had to wait, and the service was excellent, although not rushed.

We got three deserts to try at Town - apple cobbler, hot fudge cake, and the chocolate bread pudding. The deserts were delicious. They also had a really nice beer list. The guys considered doing a beer tasting there one night. However, the staff was not great. Sunset Place was pretty deserted at that point, I guess because of the rain and the fact that many people may have gone out of town for Memorial Day weekend, yet, they were in a hurry to get us to leave (instead of coming to ask if we wanted anything else, they ask three times if we had received the check, which we had gotten rather quickly without even asking for it). We were two nice, quiet, young couples, and we ordered over $100 between drinks and deserts over a period of an hour. You would think they would have been a bit more accomodating since we couldn't go anywhere because it was raining. Oh well!

Dine-Around in South Miami

Hello! Four of us are doing a dine-around in South Miami this weekend. We were thinking of going to three places - somewhere for pre-dinner drinks and/or appetizers (Maybe Bougainvilleas or Town), somewhere for dinner (Two Chefs?) and somewhere for dessert. My husband and I are not big dessert eaters. Although we love sweets, we rarely order dessert when we go out for dinner. So, I'm sort of at a loss for suggestions. Any ideas?

Empanadas 2008 Miami

Believe it or not my favorite empanadas are from Estancia Argentina by Merrick Park. The gruyere-onion one is fantastic, as is the spinach empanada.

I had the guava empanada at Lario's in South Miami twice. The first time, it was served warm and was quite sinful. My in-laws went shortly thereafter and they ordered and said they were cold and not great. I went again and had the cold empanada experience. Since it was so inconsistent I haven't ordered them again.

Red Fish Grill - no take-out??

My family and I will be going to Matheson Hammock Park with the kids on Sunday afternoon to go to the beach, etc. We figured we would get some take out from Red Fish Grill to eat back at our place after all of the days activities. When I called to inquire, the girl who answered the phone didn't seem to understand what I was talking about and then simply said that they do not permit take out. I was surprised and I'm curious as to why a restaurant would have a no take out policy? Any comments?

Thanksgiving Rpt: Whole Foods, Glick's Kosher Market, Upper Crust (pies)

Our office ordered everything from Whole Foods and baked/re-heated the items. We ordered the turkey, mashed potatoes, sweet potatoes, cornbread stuffing, squash risotto, and the green beans almandine. Everything was fantastic. We were 9 for lunch and we had no leftover turkey (we are big meat eaters) and the sides were not "abundant" at all but we ordered just the perfect amount because everyone left satisfied and not overly full. I was very impressed with the food and the ease of ordering/picking up, etc. You must beware though that the food must be re-heated and it will take some time. The turkey is cooked but it comes cold so it'll spend a good hour and a half in an oven, so if you don't have easy access to an oven, this is not the place you want to order from. When our office courier went to go pick up the food he said the lady at Whole Foods told him that a lot of people were upset when they realized that the food was not ready and warmed for them. For us it was not an issue but it can be for others. We'll be ordering from them again next year.

Family trip to Philadelphia (Center City)

My family and I went to Philadelphia this weekend and we had a great time. We had some cheesesteaks which were fabulous from Tony Jr’s. The place is small but it has a large open space so although they don’t have any high chairs, we took our double stroller in there and the kids actually behaved. The gentleman who brought us our food was very nice and the service in general was good.

We walked around the area and wound up at Naked Chocolate Café. I had read some reviews of Naked Chocolate which were not so great but I really wanted to have a good desert and it looked like such a cute shop that we decided to walk in. We ordered one of their nudos (a chocolate chip one), a chocolate cake and a strawberry cupcake. I was disappointed because they didn’t have much of a cupcake selection and that was really what I wanted. The chocolate chip nudo is their version of a brownie. It was DELICIOUS.

I really wanted another one so the next day, after dinner we walked back to Naked Chocolate Café for me to get another nudo. They didn’t have the chocolate chip nudo but they had a chocolate nudo and this time they had chocolate and vanilla cupcakes so we got one of each of those. I was very impressed with the taste and texture of the cake, the taste of the frosting, and the ratio of frosting to cake.

They also have something else which I thought was interesting - a chocolate fondue platter. The platter has strawberries, bananas, cheesecake and marshmallows. It’s not easy to find a restaurant (aside from a fondue restaurant) which has fondue deserts and they are so delicious and easy to prepare that I always wonder why. Anyway, I didn’t realize they had that until after I had ordered for us, but it looked delicious and we definitely could have shared that. The girls at the counter were not as friendly as one would expect at a cute bakeshop, but they were nice enough. All in all, we really liked the Naked Chocolate Café and we would return.

On our last morning we went to The Reading Terminal Market and I wish we would have gone at another time. We had breakfast at The Dutch Eating Place which some of you chowhounders had recommended and boy could we have eaten more. The pancakes were delicious as were the apple cinnamon toasts. We went ahead and bought an apple pie from the vendor right next door to take to some friends and that was exquisite, too. I can’t wait to go back!

Archie's Pizza In Key Biscayne, FL, Warning! Red Flag

I am not surprised by this at all. The location in Coral Gables isn't much better. I used to go there relatively often with a few colleagues because we would split a pizza and a couple of salads. It's a great lunch place but the service is terrible. They are rude and indignant. The way they treated us sometimes it seemed as if they were doing us this huge favor or something. Anyway, we stopped going when we realized that we had to get our own silverware and water. We figured it just wasn't a good thing that we were deciding which table to sit at based upon how close it was to the waitress' water and oil/vinegar station.

The mini grilled jerk pork sandwiches sound great. DId you make them yourself or buy them somewhere? We're thinking of Mai Tais and guava cupcakes which I'm really excited about. Thanks for the tips.

Caribbean Themed Party

Hi guys!! My friends and I are hosting a Caribbean Themed Party in a few weeks and we want to serve some delicious food. We've already decided what the theme drink is going to be as well as the desert but we're drawing a blank as to where we can order the food from. We want some appetizers (coconut shrimp? conch fritters? but what else?) and maybe figured we could order some Jerk Penne from Ortanique, but we want to have more of a selection for our guests. It's not going to be a sit down (although there will be tables). Does anyone have any ideas as to what we can serve and where we can order the food from? Our budget is not particularly restrictive but we don't want the food to be exhorbitantly pricey either. Thanks in advance for your pearls of wisdom!

MIA - Coral Gables Breakfast

John Martin's is open for Sunday brunch. I could have sworn I had gone on a Saturday morning but I just checked the website and it's only Sunday brunch. It's very good and the nice thing is you can take a walk down Miracle Mile afterward.

Delicias is just like it's name, delicious. Our family goes to Sunday morning breakfast at Delicias about once per month and we always order their delicious ham croquetas. It is my humble opinion that Delicias has the best ham croquetas in town. They also have the best chicken croquetas in town but you have to special order them (we order them whenever we have an excuse for a party). The actual breakfast is good (if you're up for a heavy greasy breakfast). The serrano ham they chop into the scrambled eggs distinguishes Delicias from other places. The rolls are also always good. Those are the positives. The negatives are that it gets crowded, and the service isn't consistent. Sometimes we get a fabulous waiter/waitress and other times we're lucky if we get out of there in a couple of hours! Of course for the price you really can't get any better.

Romantic Anniv. Dinner in Miami - Casa Tua???

I totally loved Baleen. So many of my friends loved it that I thought I would be disappointed. Not the case at all. Our experience was great. We even went back during Miami Spice and it was great then, too. The view is fabulous and it is very dimly lit and/or candle lit (outside) so the restaurant is very well-suited for your purposes. Each time we dine there I wish I could stay at the hotel but I live so close by that it almost seems like a waste.

Azul was nice and pretty romantic. The food was good. But I just don't think it can compare to Baleen.

Thanks for all of the suggestions!!! Chinatown and the Reading Terminal Market sound great for our kids so I'm adding them to our "itinerary"! We're also looking for an Italian place walking distance from the hotel (within about a mile or two). Is Chinatown near to the Crowne Plaza? Thanks again.

Disney Quick Service Meals

I'm assuming that by Quick Service Meals you mean places that offer buffet and/or counter service. Our family went to Disney a few months ago and we stayed at the Animal Kingdom Lodge. There's a restaurant there called Boma which offers an extensive buffet. I'm not particularly attracted to buffets usually but it was really good. We actually had breakfast there the next morning! The nice thing was that it was quick and comfortable. Reservations are recommended. We made reservations about a half hour before and they honored it!
