Soft Matzahs
Very interesting. I have never seen anything like it. Is there a Chowhound Most Interesting Tip Award I can nominate you for?
Lin's Kosher Chinese Kitchen, in NJ
I don't think there are Orthodox in the immediate vicinity, but they are about twenty minutes from booming Highland Park/Edison and a similar distance from East Brunswick. They are also less than half an hour from Morristown and its sizaeable chabad community.
Kosher for Passover yeast
I haven't seen new Ramapo Valley in a few years. I do know that the Rav hamachshir (R Zuishe Bleich) is accessible thorugh the OU. You may want to try him.
Favorite Kosher Root Beer
And now Yahoo says that Root Beer is the healthiest soda for teeth...

Shishkabob Steakhouse Closed?
Yes, I saw the sign too a few weeks ago. I asked some people I know who live in Oceanside but they had not heard anything in advance. What a shame, two consecutive quality shops (David's and SS) and neither could make it. I hope that things rebound there soon.
Beer Madness
I'm not sure what it says about the "blind testers" since they chose Bud over Victory Lager.
Beer Madness
Update - they are now at the elite 8 - Saranac Pale vs Dogfish Head, Dominion Ale vs Allagash White, Brooklyn Lager vs Rolling Rock (no brainer) and Pete's Wicked Ale vs Ellie's Brown Ale.
New store in 5 Towns
Thanks for the details -of course I'd love to know more about what the specialty burgers are (as well as the prices etc..) but I guess that I'll have to wait until they open.
Slightly off topic but I heard about a place in Suffolk County (Long Island) where you can buy different cuts of meat by the pound and then go into another area where you get to cook it yourself with all the different sauces they have available to you. I wonder whether this would fly at a kosher establishment.
Pomagranate in Boca
The NY Post had a piece on the Tapas craze over the weekend and it seems that it is almost entirely pork/ham. I've never had Tapas and don't know how it tastes, but I'm wondering -- would a kosher restaurant be able to effectively simulate the taste with chicken/beef?
BJ's in Valley stream opened yesterday
I can't say I'm surprised. The only kosher in VS is the Dunkin Donuts on Sunrise Highway which in and of itself is only kosher because its owned by the same guy that owns the one on Rockaway Blvd in Lawrence. I just don't think that there is that much kosher traffic in the area, notwithstanding the fact that it is almost on the border of the ever expanding brooklyn east (aka the 5 towns).
Kosher Frozen Pizza
I'm not sure that's the reason. I haven't seen them for about six months. I actually asked one of the frozen food guy at Mazur's (Little Neck, NY) and he did not remember that Empire ever made them. Of course that could say something about how long he has been working there...
Phenomenal Kosher Pizza? Does it Exist?
Although I was still in grade school when they left, as I recall, the Hunki's in Oceanside was quite good. I can tell you that that the Pizza at Hunki's in West Hempstead which (as of about 6-9 months ago) is now under new ownership has tailed off significantly. I'm told that they now use semolina flour to make the pizza although I am not enough of a gourmet to tell you why this makes a difference. I can tell you that most of my kids will not eat pizza from there anymore (although they will still eat the french fries).
Kosher Frozen Pizza
I cant even seem to find the large (10 inch) Empire Pizzas anymore. We used to go for the Spinach Pies, but I haven't seen any of them lately.
BRUNCH AT ORCHIDEA - BROOKLYN
Come on, haven't you ever had anything that was flavorful but was a little too rich to gorge yourself on it? If you have had that experience how would you describe it? If you have not been in that position, maybe you should accompany Himishgal to Orchedia.
BRUNCH AT ORCHIDEA - BROOKLYN
Went for a sheva brochos on a Sunday a few years ago. Lunch Buffet had sushi, various hot pasta dishes, broiled fish, salads and a dessert bar. I recall that the food was tasty but seemed very rich.
Mineola, a citrus fruit
I saw them last night at a Pathmark in New Hyde Park @ .66 each.
Beer Madness
The Washington Post is running a March Madness tournament involving 32 beers on its website. Beers remaining include: Pete's Wicked, Anchor Steam, Saranac Pale Ale, Dogfish, Brooklyn Lager, Sam Adams...

Girl Scout cookies- who can resist?
But are they made from real girl scouts? (just couldn't resist the Adams family reference).
No red horseradish for Passover, am I crazy?
Can't say that I have ever heard/seen it done. Is this a recent addition?
On a separate note, we dip pineapple instead of potato in the salt water for Karpas.
Mineola, a citrus fruit
I've been seeing them in most supermarkets on Long Island for the past 10+ years. Sometimes they are referred to as Minneola Tangelos, sometimes just as Minneola Oranges. They always have that distinct cap on the top that makes me think about the "honeybells" that get advertised in the papers in mid-winter. I've been able to get them at Stop & Shop, Pathmark & Waldbaums in addition to specialty grocers like H-Mart. They don't carry them all year round but they are usually available in the winter. And yes, they have the nice tangerine tang although they also have similarities to oranges.
KOSHER SUBWAY
Thanks for the link. Now I am really ready to eat there.
BTW- Has anyone tried the steak sandwich? Do they make the steak on the spot or is it precooked and warmed up?
what to bring on a 12 hour flight
Bottled water is still out. I flew yesterday and watched as people's bottled drinks were confiscated by the TSA at the metal detectors. Of course you could buy the same drinks at the newsstand on the other side for 3x the price...
The suggestion of checking with TSA before you fly is a good idea. Since I was flying both ways the same day I checked with TSA when I got in as to what I could bring on my return flight. Deli sandwiches, burgers, fries, even packets of ketchup and mustard were allowed.
KOSHER SUBWAY
What kind of side dishes do they offer with the sandwiches? Soups? Any comments appreciated.
Kosher For Passover - food coloring
The OU website indicates that Gefen makes a kosher for passover line of food coloring (including blue). I have enclosed a link below. As to how to find it in Manhattan you're on your own.

Kosher in/near North Shore of Long Island
In Roslyn proper there is a Kolbeh (1 Intervale Road, Roslyn). They are part of the same chain you know from Queens - very good persian food, but I don't believe they have shwarma. There was a shwarma place (Hummous World) under the VHQ, but the VHQ pulled their hashgacha in May 2006 and I don't know what happened after that.
As mentioned above there is a Bagel Boss on Willis just below the Northern State. They are under a reliable hashgacha (Rabbi Asher Schechter - if you are from Queens you may know his FIL - Rabbi Peretz Steinberg from the YI of Queens Valley) but are not closed shabbos.
Other than those you will need to drive to Great Neck or Queens.
Kosher Barbeque
The chain that comes to mind when you say Kosher BBQ is Dougie's. They have locations in Bklyn, Queens, Teaneck (NJ), Deal (NJ) and Cedarhurst (LI). Their products are also available in Cleveland, Ohio as take out but I don't think that they are made there.
Simple Jewish food
If you are looking for a Jewish cook book that is not merely a collection of sisterhood recipes check out the Susie Fishbein books (Kosher Pallete, KP II, etc...). I'm pretty sure that they are commerically available on amazon or similar sites.
