Quiet restaurant for a celebration, near Gainey Suites Hotel in Scottsdale (N. Scottsdale and E. Doubletree)

Hi there --

I am coming to Scottsdale to celebrate my father's 74th birthday. We'll be there just after New Year's. We're looking for a place to celebrate that has these qualities:

- within a half hour's drive of Gainey Suites Hotel in Scottsdale (N. Scottsdale and E. Doubletree)
- quiet. Serious on that. Quiet. He's very hard of hearing.
- Not a lot of spicy food
- A celebration kind of place
- No worry on price

The other day my husband mentioned a famous chocolatier in the Mid-West who now makes caramels that he wanted to try. The gift bell went off in my head. Problem is, I don't know who this chocolatier is. And internet searching has not solved the puzzle.

Thanks. I am pretty much open. I'd love a whole-in-the-wall place because I tend to like those. But really I just want an excellent place that has food special to Atlanta (I live in San Francisco and New York so I get a diversity of cuisines). Topping out at $25 entrees.

Thanks for your concern, Melanie, but I know how to manage my time.

Some event organizers always plan to sell day-of tickets -- and further some do not announce for sure whether they will so as to keep the buzz going. Had these folks sold day-of tickets every year prior to this one then that would give us more information (no guarantees) as to whether or not they would this time. And seeing as when I originally posted on chowhound they had said they might be selling day-of tickets, seems like a reasonable question.

Gender Breakdown of Servers

I recently ate at L'Incontro in Astoria, Queens, NY. It was a fantastic meal but was tainted by the fact that there were no female servers. Wanting to give the benefit of the doubt, I inquired whether there were any female servers at all on staff. The response I got was "No, because sometimes the tables had to be moved and the women were not strong enough."

Aren't we past this?

I am reconsidering a return visit to L'Incontro.

(on a positive note, last night I ate at Cyrus in Healdsburg, CA. A first-class restaurant that I'm pleased to say achieved gender equity in the servers.)

Anyone else take note of the gender equity at restaurants? Want to warn me away from places that irresponsibly do not hire women?
