Liquor Store In/Around Grand Central
I like this place... small but it gets the job done.
Park Ave Liquor Shop
292 Madison Avenue, New York, NY - (212) 685-2442
however if you have a little time its well worth taking the 6 train down to Astor Wines
Astor Wines & Spirits
399 Lafayette Street, New York, NY - (212) 674-7500
Midtown Lunch
Crestanello is closed. They have a sign that they are moving and to check their website for details, but the website is down.
Review - Kunjip (9 W 32ND ST , 212-216-9487)
I'm a big fan of the egg casserole too! They served it at Won Jo at the BBQ tables as well. I took my brother-in-law and his wife and kids to Won Jo for BBQ and the staff there were super nice! The kimchi pancake is inferior to Kunjip but still very good.
Beer, Pre-Beer Food, and Vietnamese
I have to concur on Waterfront, its just around the corner from my apt and I love the bar food there. Even the house salad is a notch above, plus they have cajun spiced popcorn. Its pub food plus a 4$ pint of the week. Woot!
But it is hard to argue witht the wall of taps at Ginger Man, though...
I would throw in the Essex Ale house a tiny little dive just south of houston on essex st. Tons of bottles and like 6 taps of good beer. Its just around the corner from Tuck Shop and Katzs and they dont mind if you bring food int....
World's Worst Products - Canned whole chicken
Ok Pickled Eggs make me want to spew my guts all over the place, but in my assorted pickled goodies package from amazon.com (i'm serious...just look..and yes I ordered this before I knew that pickled eggs were war crime nasty) they sent me pickled turkey gizzards.....looked like a lab experiment gone horribly wrong.
Oddly enough I'm fine with just about everything else on this thread....but the gorge is already rising in my throat thinking about pickled eggs.
Birthday Dinner at Tao- what to order and where to drink before/after?
Tao isn't really a 'food' place. Its a scene. I've found the food to be mediocre at best.
You can have drinks at Nikki Beach afterwards I suppose.
Where to buy the best kimchi?
I'm a fan of Woorjip as well, their Kimchi pancakes are pretty good as well.
I think if "Han Ah Reum" is the place I'm thinking of, there are three different places in there to find Kimchi. The little jars you were talking about, plus little take out style containers, plus big bags of the stuff in the back.
I would point out that the lunch specials at Kunjip are practically like paying 8$ for two differint kinds of Kimchi and then getting a nice Korean soup with rice and sides for free.
Question about pomegranate molasses and muhammara
to the best of my knowledge the two are the same. Pomegranate molasses is just highly reduced pomegranate juice.
Genki Drinks
Anyone know where to get them in manhattan?
I've tried the grocery on 41st (I have no idea the name)
thx
Best BBQ Ribs in NYC
In order of my preference....
Dinosaur BBQ is my favorite for food and value, I think quite a bit better than Virgil's. Plus Fairway's right there, do some shopping.
Blue Smoke is also quite good, but pricy. Jazz club in the basement is high cover and short sets but good acts.
Virgil's is very easy to get to, and reasonably good. Got a jones for swine and not a lot of time....
Brother Jimmy's is OK if you like a drunken frat party environment.
Spanky's BBQ is right near by Virgil's, but I thought it was terrible.
Havent tried Daisy May's or RUB, but now I will!
Chow Mein-On-A-Bun at Nathan's in Coney Island
I had the chow mein sandwich about 2 years ago on a (faux) nostalgia (I'm not old enough for this to be authentic nostalgia) trip to Coney Island.
Yuck. Your childhood can keep it.
Georgian wines in Manhattan
Still outer borough but theres a liquor store on 31st St and 30th Ave (Just down the stairs from the 30th ave stop on the N train) in Astoria which caries a wide selection of eastern european spirits.
However, they evade the yellow pages somehow.
Indian Mangoes
I'd wager an educated guess that Patel Brothers on 74th St in Jackson Heights (Queens) would be a fertile hunting ground. Hop the 7 or E train to 74th St, its only like 15 minutes outside of Manhattan.
Plus you can usually run into a street vendor that will sell you a whole manngo, cut up, with lime juice for a buck.
Girls' Night Treats
Bruchetta: If you have a grill use it to toast bias cut baguette brushed with olive oil and garlic. Top with Chopped tomato and fresh basil. Maybe leave out the garlic, you -are- going out after all.
Melon wrapped with Prosciutto. If you need a recipe I can't help you, mine's secret.
Goat cheese topped with a little jarred pesto sauce on the same toasts as the bruchetta.
It is summer, so get a bottle of Prosecco and a can of peach nectar. Cheap and tasty!
If you've never had Campari grab a bottle serve with soda water and a lime. Its a love hate thing (I hate it, but friends swear by it)
CRAP you said SWEET.... ummm... errr......
Ah! Chocolate fondue!! Whats more fun than that! A block of GOOD chocolate, mix with (heavy or light) cream about 2 parts chocolate to 1 part cream, in a double boiler. Melt. Xfer to fondue pot, or just serve in a nice crock. Serve with Pineapple cubes, dried apricots, marshmallows, angel food cake, bananas.
Could be a little messy but mmmmm good.
World Cup Final--French Fan
Boehmian Hall is Astoria is a madhouse for worldcup, a huge outdoor beer garden with good czech food. They have 4 or 5 screens setup outside. Only worries would be getting in, and getting so drunk you cant find your way back home.
New Job - whats to eat at 38th St. and 6th Ave?
I second Yum Thai.
Korean, I recommend Kunjip on 32nd, they have lunch specials that are a great value. Mandoo bar is also good.
For your afternoon happy hour, the Ginger Man, Under the Volcano and the roof deck of the Metro hotel.
Clients I suggest Artisinal, Wolfgangs, or Asia de Cuba. In Grandcentral Metrazur (impressive for out of towners) or Cafe Centro (not really in GCT) Client drinks maybe at "230 5th".
Maybe a bit far but you can find a wide selection of goodies on 46th between 5th and 6th. Including a decent Turkish, Argentinian, Brazilian (including a glass case of takeout savory pastries), a great Kosher Schwarma place, an hispanic deli with great roast pork (Cafe Cello) and a Popeyes for that heavy grease craving.
