Jaxie Waxie Woo's Profile

What is your favorite vintage kitchen item?

I know this is almost a year later but.... The Bazar Francais was my family's store. It was owned by successive generations of the Ruegger family, not Dione Lucas. The Ruegger name, and the store's for that matter, are still visible on the old building on Sixth between 20th & 21st in NYC.

Food Blogs with Best Photography

I strongly second the nomination. Even though Ruhlman writes more about food preparation than dining out experiences, his wife's accompanying photos are simply amazing and not to be missed.

We're looking to buy a few for the kitchen in our new home!

Macys Friends and Family 25% off Sale includes All Clad and LeCreuset

Yes, but there are two catches (at least how it was described to me in NYC's Herald Square):

1) You have to make the purchase on a credit card (doesn't have to be a Macy's card), and

2) You have to come back to the store after Dec. 1 to pick up your purchases. You can't walk out with it and still get the reduction.

Unless you need the item in question badly for Thanksgiving dinner, it's still well worth it. Herald Square sold a good amount of LeCreuset this week as part of the sale... the boxes are stacking up in the holding area!

Where can I buy Greek yogurt near West Windsor?

Good to know! I'll check there if my usual trip to Wegmans comes up empty...

Where can I buy Greek yogurt near West Windsor?

Thanks for the tip on names to look for!

Where can I buy Greek yogurt near West Windsor?

Ahhhh -- I had tried Wegmans, but not the organic section. Many thanks!

Where can I buy Greek yogurt near West Windsor?

Anyone know a local market selling Greek yogurt? We have family coming for a visit, and my mother-in-law is hooked on it. I have no clue where to find it... anyone?

Thanks!

Good hibachi near West Windsor/Princeton?

Many thanks for the suggestions. We ended up at Shogun 27. The food was very good (fortunately, not too garlicky!) and there was a definite party vibe though the sudden disco lights and overhead music got a tad lame after they did the umpteenth birthday sparkler thing.

My biggest complaint was that we had to wait 45 minutes AFTER our confirmed reservation time before being seated. The young woman at the podium just kept saying she was sorry and it'll be "just a minute".... after being told that for 35 minutes, we asked to speak to the manager. She went to get him, but came back without him saying he was just now setting up our table. When we finally were taken back a few minutes later, staffers were still in the process of setting up our table, the manager nowhere in sight. He/she never did come to our table to apologize for the wait.

My other complaint? They charge for fountain soda refills. Talk about nickel-and-diming your guests!

Good hibachi near West Windsor/Princeton?

Help - it's my sister-in-law's birthday tonight and she wants to go to a hibachi restaurant. They are from out of town and we haven't been to any nearby, so we're all clueless on where to go.

We don't want to stray too far from the general area. Anyone know of a decent hibachi restaurant, say within a 20-25 minute drive from Quakerbridge Mall?

Many thanks for any suggestions!

Chez Laurence Closed?!

Three months later and the lights are still out. There's nothing going on at the site....

Shhh -- don't tell Duane Reade.

Rocco DiSpirito / Cooking Show / A&E

Not sure, but this "casting call" for average Joes and Janes that he can culinarily (is that a word?) rescue went out within the last 24 hours.

Has anyone read "Service Included?"

I started it on the train ride home yesterday and am about 3/5 done already. If anyone wants it when I'm done, let me know. I'm happy to pass it on as it's a good read, but not something I'd likely pick up and read again.

Rocco DiSpirito / Cooking Show / A&E

Heard through the grapevine that A&E is working on a cooking show with Rocco DiSpirito.

Producers are currently looking for "...people with unique and compelling stories who need Rocco's help in the kitchen to share these significant moments over an intimate and sumptuous meal. Invite Rocco into YOUR kitchen and he will teach you what to cook, where to find the ingredients and how to prepare the ideal meal for your extra special occasion."

TGI Friday's Chicken Ceasar Salad - where's the rest?

I ordered the chicken ceasar salad at TGIF (near Princeton, NJ) yesterday for dinner. Although I cringe at paying $10 for a salad, I'd be a lot less perturbed about it if I wasn't still hungry after eating it.

It came in this small little bowl...five small strips of chicken across the top, a couple of croutons, and maybe two handfuls of greens. They only thing they went overboard on was the parmesan cheese.

What a mistake.

Rupee Room and Chutney Manor

LOL - yeah, that would help.

Rupee Room - Rt. 1 South in North Brunswick, NJ

Chutney Manor - Rt. 1 South in South Brunswick, NJ

Rupee Room and Chutney Manor

We've wondered the same. Anyone been to either one?

K&Z Pickles?

There may not be a boxed product now, but there definitely was at some point since I'd been buying them at that ShopRite for at least two years. Maybe what I'm calling a box the guy at the plant called a tub. The square plastic boxes were clearly marked as K&Z branded. They came in two sizes no less.

Thanks for the site link, Eric. I'll give them a call.

Why Le Creuset?

Many thanks for the guidance and the talking points. Rather than buy the whole lot, it's sounds like I'm better off just adding a few critical pieces...

Why Le Creuset?

I love my one dutch oven and am very interested in purchasing a complete set of additional pieces.

My husband, however, is not quite convinced it is worth the considerable expense. I could go out and just buy the pieces I want, but I prefer that he "buy in" to the idea that the investment makes sense. To that end, what would you consider the brand's top 3-4 selling points? Durability is obviously one....

Any help would be appreciated!

K&Z Pickles?

I used to buy the square boxes of K&Z brand pickles -- without question, the best I've ever tasted -- at the ShopRite at Rt. 1 and Quakerbridge Road in Lawrenceville/West Windsor. Sadly, they haven't had them in stock in ages and the appy person I spoke to wasn't sure if they were coming back.

Anyone know the ones I'm talking about and know where I can find them? That one ShopRite is the only place I've ever seen them.

Seek quality Sundae in CNJ

Congratulations on reaching your weight loss goal!

I did the same thing when I was losing my extra pounds -- but I opted for Cold Stone Creamery. Chain or not, I am weak in the knees (and the willpower) for their graham cracker-coated cheesecake concoction!

Best Steamed Pork Buns?

Anything recommendable in midtown? Lunch is around the corner and a trek way downtown is not in the cards.

I'm not well-versed on Korean cuisine - anything similar to a Chinese steamed pork bun that I could look for on menus? The stretch of restaurants near B'way and 32nd is nearby if so...

Best Jersey Diners (Lots good eats, little $)

We used to live in Long Branch and were frequent diners at Eatontown's All Seasons and Cobblestone (underrated and cheaper) diners. We live in Mercer County now, but still go back at least once every 6-8 weeks for All Seasons' buffalo wings, chicken caesar salad and Texas chicken wrap.

Locally, Mastoris and The Americana (East Windsor) are both great in terms of food, pricing, and menu options, but they're always way too crowded. We rarely bother trying them anymore. Up 206 is the Hillsborough Diner. Good eats, great pricing, friendly staff.

Growing up in Freehold, the Golden Bell was a "must go to" place on the weekend. We've gone back twice in the last two years and were rather disappointed.

Harini - Indian Lawrenceville NJ

We went there midweek sometime in the fall. While the food was good, the service was agonizingly slow. We waited far too long for what we ordered -- and the restaurant wasn't even that busy! We haven't been back since.

Have they gotten their act together on the service side?

My Kingdom for Steamed Pork Buns (WW/Princeton area)

Great - many thanks for the suggestions! I'll report back after we venture out next weekend...

PRINCETON AREA: Restaurants for Easter Dinner?

We're off to the airport to begin a vacation very early the morning after Easter, so I don't feel like making a big fuss at our place for the holiday.

Does anyone have any suggestions for places in the Princeton/West Windsor area offering a special Easter menu for dinner? We don't want anything too upscale... it would be a party of five adults.

Many thanks!

Bourdain in London

While the "chippie" is very much a standard in almost any British town, the show did the Scottish palate a great disservice by shooting at one instead of exploring some of the more unique and substantive meals/delicacies that are common there. An inquisitive segment on haggis (not the deep-fried variety!), blood pudding, etc. would have been far more interesting to watch...

Edinburgh is a great city rich with historical, architectural, and possibly even culinary significance. It's too bad this part of the show felt so rushed, like it was done on the fly as an afterthought to a show on London...

My Kingdom for Steamed Pork Buns (WW/Princeton area)

I have been searching for the perfect steamed pork bun for a while now. So far, not so good.

Anyone have any recommendations in the greater Princeton/West Windsor area?

Many thanks!
