Anchor Hocking vs Pyrex

Thanks! I am new to cooking, so apologize in advance regarding the naivetie of my next question, but shouldn't glass be hand washed and not in the dishwasher if it can't handle heat change? My dishes always come out warm in the dishwasher.

Anchor Hocking vs Pyrex

I have been reading a lot about pyrex exploding. Is Anchor Hocking better? Or should that not be used either from hot to cold? Thanks.

Cooking with oil

I am a little confused. I am new to cooking and thought cooking with olive oil was healthy. But then I read something about smoke point and olive oil not being good to cook with. What is true? When do you use olive versus canola versus vegetable oil?

Thanks!

Water filter recs.

Does anyone have any water filter suggestions? One that would attach to the sink. I have read some of Debra Dadd's blog about water filters and have been left totally confused and scared (I guess a lot of water filters have plastic which is what I am trying to avoid)! I would like to avoid creating a "hungry water," which I believe is reverse osmosis. Please let me know what you all recommend.

Old Bread at Whole Foods

I went to whole foods yesterday to buy the Baker's bread and the only one that they were selling expired today (so of course I did not buy it). Is this a specific problem with the Baker's bread or natural breads in general due to lack of turnover and lack of preservatives? Believe it or not our WF is not that crowded (they choose a poor location). Also, supposed I had bought the bread that would expire today and put it in the freezer, do I then disregard the expiration date and keep it for a few more weeks or does the expiration date still hold? Thanks!

Why is oatmeal more popular than oatbran?

So, I know steel cut oats are supposed to be the best for you and rolled oatmeal in the general public seems to be most popular, but why not oat bran? I was looking at the nutritional label of oat bran and is lower calorie and higher in fiber. AIt would seem that oat bran should be more popular. Is it not as healthy for you for other reasons? Not a whole grain? Digested more quickly? Lose vitamins. Someone please enlighten me! Thanks!

Non-plastic pyrex lids?

Ok........so new to the cooking world and my house is filled with tuperware and plastics. I am encouraging my family to make the switch to safer containers- pyrex and corningware, which we are slowly doing. However, the pyrex containers sold seem to have all have plastic lids! what do you all use as non-plastic lids for pyrex?

My second question is, I use to freeze soups etc in plastic zip lock bags, which saved a lot of space. Any suggestions for how you non-plastic users store things in the freezer? Plastic freezer bags had really helped cut down storage space! Using pyrex seems so dangerous, like its going to crack on break on my toe (my freezer is kinda stuffed). Is corningware better to use? Thanks for any advice and suggestions you can provide!
