Best Burger in Calgary?

I haven't tried a "real" burger at Blue Star yet but the honey mustard chicken burger is awesome!

Downtown Calgary toddler-friendly

Go buy one of those portable high chair things that strap to the chair in the restaurant. We had one that inflated (sort of) and it was really small & could fit in a large purse.

If you got the email address from the website, that is the best way. They also have a Facebook Page. I don't think they are opening up the 2012 CSA sign up until November and then past members will get first "dibs".

She was talking about Model Milk not Charcut.

Best in Calgary when you are under the weather / freezing

My go to is the Satay Chicken Soup at Noodle King.

Calgary CSA Ratings

I saw that too. Can't wait to get the details. I'll definitely sign up as long as the pickup locale works. I got stuck with Marda Loop for my veggies & it is really, really inconvenient for me as I live in the far NW. Hoping to get a better location next year.

Calgary CSA Ratings

I am constantly amazed at how much more produce I'm getting from Eagle Creek this year than I got from mine last year. I have half a share & this week I got 2 bags of potatoes, a bag of carrots, a head of cabbage, a bunch of leeks, a bunch of beets, 2 small heads of cauliflower, a huge tomato, garlic, cilantro and a huge sunflower. If you had a full share you got twice that. There is some variability because there are a few items that you got to choose between four different options.

Looking for Herbs de Provence??

I bought mine at Costco. I'd always heard about it, they had it, I bought it. Now I have no idea what to do with it.

Calgary CSA Ratings

I have a half a share in the Eagle Creek CSA. I did Thompson Small Farm last year. I like Eagle Creek better and I think they give much more variety than what I got last year. I pay $300/year for half share (I think). The first few pickups were pretty sparse but last week we got potatoes, carrots, onions, broccoli, bok choy (I think....some leafy green not kale), spinach, romaine, tomatoes, herbs and flowers. I have written about both CSAs on my blog. I know they don't like posted links but the link is on my profile if you are interested. Just search for CSAs when you get there.

Double Zero

They are a very busy restaurant & I've never had their pizza as takeout. We always eat there. If you decide to go that route you MUST make reservations.

Double Zero

I would say that Rea's is the most like what you are looking for and the most consistent of the 3 on your "must try" list. I love Without Papers but it is again smaller pizzas with more upscale toppings. Il Centro was good when I tried it but many on this board have mentioned that it is hit or miss (and it wasn't as good as Rea's).

Finding bread

If you decide to branch out a bit try Aviv's bread from Sidewalk Citizen bakery. He sells at the Hillhurst/Sunnyside market on Wednesday & at his own bakery on Friday/Saturday. He makes amazing breads including ones with rye/herbs/seeds/etc. Google Sidewalk Citizen Calgary for all the places his baked goods are sold.

best pizza in calgary?

I second the recommendation for Rea's. They have fantastic pizza. Make sure and call for reservations, though, because if you just show up you will often find it full. There pizzas are very hearty and two slices is the most I could possibly eat.

I also really enjoy Without Papers (though it is totally different than Rea's). It's more Neopolitan style though I find it less soggy than Pulcinella.

Dinner for 9 Near Convention Center

Thank you! That is one of the reasons I was okay with the walk. We are going to be cooped up in the convention center all day so I seeing a bit of the city might be nice. Also there are 10 of us so no one would be paying the full price of a cab.

Dinner for 9 Near Convention Center

Ignorance is bliss on that item. I did notice that there was a really old date on their menu. Oy. Maybe I should see if they can send me one. It did look like they had more options though. Ugh. Why do I always volunteer to set these things up? #facepalm

Dinner for 9 Near Convention Center

I passed Jsix by one of the ladies & she thought it was too expensive for the group. There isn't a big selection of food either. I'm happy with my choice. Plus there's always the option to cab it one or both ways.

Also, this is on a Saturday night. All restaurants I looked at only have happy hour during the week. Also OpenTable showed that they only had one reservation at 6 which is too early.

Really...we'll be fine.

Dinner for 9 Near Convention Center

I didn't specify the backroom but I now have 10 ppl. Will they put me there automatically? I decided agains Roy's because it's a chain and I figure that people will likely go there if they decide to leave the hotel for a spur of the moment dinner since it's so close.

The price point looks comperable to other places in this area. Everyone will be responsible for their own meal so they have the opportunity to buy as much or as little as they can afford. What I didn't want to do is pick a cheaper place and have horrible food.

Regardless, breakfast/lunch is not available b/c we are at a conference so it was dinner or nothing. I know that every place has plusses and minuses. I'm just trying for one with more pluses than minuses.

Dinner for 9 Near Convention Center

Is Roy's good? My friend suggested that as well but I must admit that I have a huge bias against hotel restaurants. I looked at Jsix & I definitely want to go there before I leave. Not sure it has enough variety & price points for our group.

Dinner for 9 Near Convention Center

Heading to San Diego for a convention next week. I am putting together a dinner for 9 ladies. Most have never met so I would like a place that has wide appeal to most people (i.e. though I love Indian I have no idea if all 9 will so I would rather skip it for this dinner).

Other must haves are:
- walking distance to convention center (short if possible)
- takes reservations
- Not super expensive (again...I don't know everyone's financial situation).

I know, I know....very open ended but please help a Calgary Chowhounder out!

Thanks in advance!

Italian in YYC

+1 for Rea's. It's great and a real Italian restaurant run by an Italian family. Love it.

YYC Holy Smoke Bbq

Just passed the new location.... It's on 16th Ave across from Peter's (ish). Signage is up but not open.

Calgary Restaurant's for Wedding Reception??

We did exactly what you are saying at our party at Saltlik. The room downstairs has it's own bar & they will set it up as a cash bar for you. Back then they had a rule that you had to spend $1500 but they included the proceeds from the cash bar in that total. I ordered lots of appies and everyone covered their own drinks. It worked out well.

Calgary Restaurant's for Wedding Reception??

I rented out the downstairs area at Saltlik for my husband's 40th birthday (3 years ago). The food and service was great. I would use them again. Our party had lots of problems but it was because they rented out the main restaurant to the Progressive Conservative Party and they would NOT leave us alone. The bathrooms for the entire restaurant are on the bottom level so there is foot traffic past your event. We had issues b/c the PC's thought it was part of their party too & got very nasty when told they were not. They ate our food, stole our cake, called one of my friends the c-word....it was a disaster. Saltlik was overwhelmed, I think, and tried to keep them at bay. Long story short, I think it's a great venue as long as they don't rent the main restaurant out. I don't think you would have any issues with regular diners in the restaurant.

Craft beer Market, Calgary....What a disappointment

Another +1 for District. We were just their on Friday and the food & service were great. My only little complaint was that the music was so loud that you could not carry on a convo easily.

Best Caesars in YYC

River Cafe makes theirs with pepper infused vodka. It was tasty but I didn't particularly like their rimmer (not sure what it was).

Restaurants in NE Calgary

What kind of restaurant are you looking for? I am assuming Canadian/Western food but are there any ethnic restaurants that would be okay?

The new Calgary Farmers' Market at Blackfoot Centre will open tomorrow

That was the point of my reply before. I just don't understand how people think a market will be full of farmers in Calgary in January. I don't have any unrealistic love of CFM but I want people to be fair in their dis'ing of the place. No market could EVER be full of farmers in Calgary in January.

The new Calgary Farmers' Market at Blackfoot Centre will open tomorrow

If you want really fresh local produce, join a CSA (Community Supported Agriculture). There are quite a few in Calgary with an assortment of philosophies and products. I joined Thompson Small farm last year and joined Eagle Creek this year. I really like the people behind Thompson but my family doesn't eat chard or kale so I decided to try someone new this year.

The growing season in Calgary doesn't really get started for anyone other than the greenhouse tomato/cucumber growers until much later in the summer.

The new Calgary Farmers' Market at Blackfoot Centre will open tomorrow

Even at the old CFM they filled in farmer spaces with other vendors during off season. I'm sure they can't leave half of the market empty to "leave space" for the farmers. I am hopeful that it will be a true farmer's market for our ridiculously short veggie season.
