duke's mayo -- i think i'm a convert
Just did that. I e-mailed them and asked if there was any place in the greater Cincinnati area that carried Dukes. They said Bigg's had it but no luck when I looked there. They sent me to Country Fresh produce in Anderson, and there it was! Smaller squeeze bottles too! It's cheaper to order it online 4 quarts for $20 including shipping. I was happy to find it locally, though, so I could make my pimiento cheese spread with it.
Knife suitable for Children
I bought the Zylliss knife shown from Amazon for my 4 year old granddaughter. It cuts better than a table knife and works on many foods. Even carrots can be cut with it. I had tried plastic picnic knives, etc. but I am really impressed with this knife....not at all useless. We've had a lot of fun making things together, and she can chop many salad things with this knife.
Cincinnati Lunch Help
Sorry to hear about your experience at Gordo's. We've been 2x and it was great both times. I also would recommend Otto's We've had great meals there. I forget the name of the BBQ joint in Reading (the one w/ the bikini clad mannequin that caused such a fuss), Mike's maybe? We loved it last spring. Also, the Green Dog cafe on Columbia Parkway had some innovative food, with great vegetarian and vegan offerings.
Cincinnati Lunch Help
You might try Gordo's in Norwood for a high end burger. Terry's Turf Club has good burgers but not sure if they're open for lunch. City BBQ is all over the city, but you might want to try Pit to Plate for good local barbecue. New Orleans to Go in Springdale is awesome, but I'd call ahead to be sure they are open. Price Hill Chili has a great Greek gyro and homestyle food, as well as Cincinnati Chili. If you want the seminal Cincinnati chili experience, try Camp Washington Chili.
Anyplace good in Wooster, OH?
We happened to be in Wooster yesterday and having resurrected this thread for reference, we decided on Matsos. What a great place! Nothing fancy, but terrific Greek food. I had a spanokopita which was so delicious, crammed with feta and spinach and baked in heavenly puff pastry. My husband's souvlaka was a marvelous meal, a pita piled high with lettuce, tomatoes and beef, topped with a great yogurt/cuke dressing. Both meals came with a good Greek salad and bread. The bill was $21 for both of us. The owner is friendly and chatty, and we enjoyed meeting him.
Mother's Day in Lansing, MI
We've had some nice dinners at Dusty's Cellar in Okemos. I don't know if they're open on Sunday.
cincy 2 weeks
You will spend major $$$ at Boca. Slim's is the best in the city IMHO. Service may be slow, but the food is carefully and artistically prepared. They welcome you bringing your own wine and will supply an opener and glasses, no corkage fee. Jean-Ro's downtown is a less pricy incarnation of Jean Robert at Pigall's, and the times we've been, the food has been top-notch. Let us know what is chosen and what you thougt.
New to Savannah: Looking for good NON-chain places
We love Sweet Potatoes Kitchen at Eisenhower and Waters in a strip shopping center. Very nicely prepared food and quite inexpensive. Can't beat the Breakfast Club on Tybee for breakfast and lunch.
Dinner recs for downtown Cincinnati
I'd suggest Jean-Ro's Bistro. Really good food at decent prices.
Savannah - Tybee top 7
Sweet Potatoes Kitchen on the corner of Eisenhower and Waters in a strip shopping center in Savannah is wonderful. Nicely and thoughtfully prepared food. It was our best meal in Savannah last time, and my husband and I got out for $34 for the 2 of us, with a glass of wine and splitting a dessert, too. On Tybee, be sure to get to The Breakfast Club on Butler and 14th for breakfast or lunch (until 2, I think). There's also a stand-type BBQ place (or there was last time) on 80 about a block from the beach. We always try to buy fresh caught shrimp when we're on Tybee. Boil them up and with a couple of drinks on the deck, this is nirvana. Wish I were there!
Hardee's thickburger
Sorry...my computer is playing tricks again. On a recent trip to Charleston, we stopped for a quick bite at Hardee's on Reidville Rd. in Spartanburg, knowing the Beacon was closed on Sunday. We chose Hardee's, since we no longer have them in our city. The thickburger was really quite good. It was cooked to order, very hot and not overdone. Very flavorful. We avoid chains like the plague, but only wanting to stop for a short time, this was a good choice. I shuddered as I read the calorie count (850), but it was almost worth it.
Casual Sunday Supper in Asheville
Actually, we're cooking Mother's Day dinner here at home, and we'll be in Asheville Sunday the 20th. Just looking for something casual that's open on a Sunday, as we'll be driving in from Charleston and probably not arriving in Asheville until about 7:00 pm.
Casual Sunday Supper in Asheville
We will be in Asheville on Sunday evening, just traveling through, and we're looking for a place to get a casual dinner.
your favorite cheese for grilled cheese sandwiches?
For those who dis American cheese, try using REAL American cheese. Kraft makes it and Kroger has their brand also. It's hard to find...you need to read the labels. Most of what passes as American "cheese" is actually processed cheese food spread, or some such nomenclature. The real stuff is about 2x the cost of the imitation. If it comes in "singles" it's not what you want. I like American grilled with real butter on good bread; my husband adds some Jarlsburg and grilled onion and tomato to his.
Grand Haven Goodies
The Snug's a pretty fair option in the evening. For us, no visit to GH is complete withouta Fricano's pizza and a wet burrito from Tip a Few. No corndog fan, but the summer isn't complete without a Pronto Pup. Someone mentioned an Asian place that I've not seen yet, but haven't been to GH in more than a year.
ReLo to Grand Rapids, MI
Thanks for reminding me of Real Food Cafe. I wanted to recommend it, but I couldn't remember the name. When I visit my girlfriend in GR, we always walk there for breakfast or lunch. Every meal I've had there has been nothing short of excellent. Hope I'll get there this summer!
Best burger in Columbus ohio?!!? who's got it?!??
Didn't they close the original Wendy's last month?
Ovens - How Many?
I think I looked at this same stove at Sears. I had the kitchen-to-die for in our old house, Viking included, but I don't think I'll buy another for the new kitchen we hope to re-do someday. I want at least 5 burners, but Viking doesn't have that in the space I need. I think 40" is as big as I can go. This stove looked really nice, and I was wondering if the smaller oven was big enough for what I need. Glad you use yours a lot. It looks like a great stove and 1/4 the price of my old Viking! When we re-do, I'll definitely get a Sub-Zero again, and I'm looking at dish drawers...they look great for entertaining, as well as doing small loads of dishes for just the 2 of us.
I'm thinking of buying a smoker...anybody have one they like?
I bought my husband a Big Green Egg for his birthday last year. He's a great cook, and I thought it would add to his repertoire. I also thought it might be a way of getting a 15 # turkey out of our freezer which I'd bought on sale and then realized that it was too much work ex. for T'giving. He LOVES it, and scarcely a week goes by that he doesn't use it. We had prime rib for company last week, and it was awesome!
Favorites in Main Strasse, Covington, KY? [Moved from Midwest]
Otto's in Covington has a small but fairly innovative menu. Fried green tomatoes are wonderful!
Charleston Update
We were in Charleston last week. I really wanted to eat at Hominy Grill, having never done so in all our visits, but we were to go out Saturday night, and they supposedly only do catering on Saturday. Hmmm. We went to Magnolia's. Our meal was OK, but for the price, I think it should have been spectacular. They share a parking lot with Blossom, and we had a similar experience there last year. Are they owned by the same people? That said, the free parking was a nice bonus. We went to SNOB for lunch and had a really nicely prepared and presented lunch.
Michigan State Help
We try to get to Dusty's Cellar in Okemos whenever we're in EL. Not inexpensive, but every meal we've had there has been outstanding. Their store also sells interesting cheeses, wines and breads, among other things.
Most recommended kitchen appliances for kitchen remodel
We're will be embarking on a second kitchen remodel in the house we moved to 2 years ago. A few things I learned: I will seriously look at the Fischer and Paykel drawer dishwahers. I like my dishwasher now, quiet, but it takes forever. I think with the 2 of us, it would be nice to load one drawer and run it more often than I run the big washer. I also think that when we entertain, I'd like to start a drawer of dishes during the party, and have them be done and ready to empty after guests leave. I'm not much at cleaning up while my company is around, but I hate facing a kitchen full of dishes late at night or (gasp) leave them for the AM. I also will get another SubZero. Having a zero degree true freezer with its own compressor is well worth it. No stinky ice, and no frozen produce in the fridge. At this house, I have an Amana and a Whirlpool, and when the temps change, I get frozen produce in both of them. Never happened in the SZ. We have ice and water in the door now, and I'm not sure I'd get that again. We always have ice on the floor, whether we use crushed or cubes. My son's GE does the same thing. We had a Viking at the old place, and we loved it, but I only have room for 36" range, and I want 6 burners, so I will need to buy something else. I'm also hoping for dual fuel....and I'm hoping I can persuade my husband that the expense to run gas to the kitchen is worth it!
Celebration dinner reccs –Cincinnati?
Slim's does take reservations and thanks for reminding about the BYO wine. Jean-Ro's Bistro is much less pricey than Jean-Ro's. Palomino has a nice vie of Fountain Square...soryy we didn't get there when it was decorated for the holidays.
Celebration dinner reccs –Cincinnati?
Jean-Ro's Bistro is very good and moderately priced. We've celebrated lots of things at Slim's in Northside...great, carefully prepared food, very much on the creative side, although mainstream enough for picky(non-adventuresome) eaters. Prix Fixe most nights. Quite reasonably priced, but no credit cards, although they've always taken our check. Brinkley's in Norwood is very much on the safe side. Reasonably priced, great prime rib, interesting salad bar. Salad bars are very much out of fashion, but in addition to the usual fare, they always have a composed salad offering and some other interesting choices.
Cathedral Bundt pan: What Cake Would Look Great in that Shape?
Thanks so much! I served this for dessert at Christmas. I had a tray of assorted cookies and candies, this cake, and a pineapple cheesecake. The poundcake was wonderful, and my daughter-in-law was pleased I'd used the bundt pan she had given me. BTW, I HEAVILY greased and floured the pan, which although it's non-stick coated has been a bear to clean. The extra heavy treatment made the pan much easier to clean that the spritzing of Pam I'd used before.
Detroit and Michigan traditions?
Certainly not Detroit, but important to Michigan tastes and economy are cherries. See cherries in Traverse City or one of my favorite spots, Cherry Republic in Glen Arbor. A west Michigan favorite, though maybe not exclusively, is dried smoked smelt. I remember eating at the White Towers in Detroit in the '50s. Great stuff, if not native to the area.
Carrabba's - a non-steak chain with a great steak
Maybe this will tempt us to use our Carrabba's gift certificates which are laying in a drawer. The only time I've been, everything was so incredibly salty that I was up frequently in the night looking for a drink of water...and I tolerate salt reasonably well.
Looking for REAL food on I-75 in Ohio
I would agree that the Pine Club is still stellar. I'm wondering what the complaints might have been. It's the most truly consistent and superlative steakhouse in all my experience. We're hoping to make a trip there between Xmas and New Year's.
