Brunch in Baltimore on Memorial Day...possible?

Miss Shirley's since you will be in the Inner Harbor area; awesome grub!

First time staying in Baltimore

I'd highly recommend taking one morning and indulging in Miss Shirley's; it is one of a kind IMO

FOODIE ON A DIET :( ... Need Healthy Restaurants

I just ate at Lemonade in Venice the other day and loved it; so many choices and it all tasted good. I'd also like to throw Mendocino Farms into the mix along with Urth Cafe (I love Urth's Nori wrap). Like many have pointed out just pick your dishes wisely.

I know, I'd love to do the pasta menu but I have been craving good pizza recently and that is something I absolutely cannot get here in Fresno. If you have been to SF, how does the pasta compare to perbacco (my personal favorite of all time after Obelisk in DC)?

haha that is the ENTIRE reason I'm going to JOG, my faves are the 7-grain granola with either banana and/or blueberries, the pumpkin spice, and the lemon (hello curd!). They have consistently outperformed almost every place I've been to (and as a pancake lover I could swear they changed the recipe at the Griddle, didn't do it for me last time, too bitter). Thankfully I found Miss Shirley's Cafe in Baltimore, and while no JOG pancakes, I think they are a good sub for when the cravings hit.

Hello All,

Thanks for the quick responses and congratulatory postings everyone! I do have a reservation at pizzeria mozza and will be keeping that reservation. I will be coming from Fresno that morning, eating a light lunch at Tender Greens before going to UCLA and then to the restaurant for dinner later. Breakfast at John O'Groats on pico - my last LA breakfast before moving to Baltimore :(

Help with choosing 1 of 3

Hello All,

I will be coming into LA on Wednesday and need help with selecting a restaurant for dinner. While coming to LA for a different reason, I will be having a celebratory dinner having graduated with my MA in psychology! As such, I need to choose which restaurant to pick from:

Gjelina or
pizzeria mozza or
rustic canyon

It will be for two people and I am just curious which of the places is at the top of their game right now and which will give me the best food. All of your advice is greatly appreciated!

Business lunch in Downtown/Mid Town Sac?

I've always liked either Tower Cafe or Crepeville (24th and 2nd) both are close to 50 and you could be back over toward Raley Field quickly.

Chopped All-Stars Finale (5/6/2012) [SPOILERS]

Now, she can't be that bad of a cook. After all, she did "beat" Michael Symon in the kitchen ;=)

But seriously...she is insufferable!

Baltimore- last minute Monday night restaurant rec!

I was there 2 weeks ago and had an amazing dinner at Thames Street Oyster House in Fells. See about availability of eating upstairs which is way more quieter than the bar upstairs. Very diverse menu with many seafood options (all cooked) and some other non-seafood dishes. I personally loved both entrees that we ordered, crabcake and ciopinno.

Breakfast/brunch spot around Hotel Angeleno

Thanks for beating me by one minute Servorg! ;) this is the same location I can give a +1 to!

Breakfast/brunch spot around Hotel Angeleno

I've always liked John O'Groats, every time I've been I got good food and service. Awesome pancakes, corned beef hash, biscuits...

Tastespotting...The real deal?

+1, usually a deal breaker for me too

Easter Brunch [Sacramento]

It's a short drive, but may I recommend Tazzina Bistro in Woodland? Its a pre-fixe and so precludes the buffet requirement and more upscale than Evan's (don't get me wrong I love Evan's but it is "rustic"). After you could take a drive in the country etc...

Lunch, Dinner and Breakfast in Carmel/Monterey area

Hey Teacher,

I saw your reviews in the SF board and was wondering how your Monterey/Carmel swing went?

GMK

Starbucks Pet Peeve

Haha, not to defend starbucks, but it DOES NOT taste like cigarette ash, TRUST ME!

Blue Cheese in Fresno

Hey Jeff,

The only place that comes to mind is the Cheese Counter at Whole Foods, they have been pretty reliable. There is also Sierra Nut Farm, but I have no real idea about their selection or prices, or if they even really have all that much cheese.

The Wild Plum Cafe & Bakery-Monterey

sorry, First Awakenings :)

The Wild Plum Cafe & Bakery-Monterey

I do like the early hours, high quality, focus on sustainable, organic food and moderate portion size. When I come to Monterey I do FA for my gut buster bfast and this place for my moderate breakfast the next day.

Monday - Saturday 7:00am - 5:30pm
Sunday - 7:30am - 2:30pm

731 Munras Ave
Ste B
Monterey, CA 93940; basically around the corner from Denny's on Abrego, catty-corner to the Chevron and hidden in the back; it's also next to a thai restaurant.

Basically, it's cold because its a smaller space with lofted ceilings; just don't sit by the door, lol.

The Wild Plum Cafe & Bakery-Monterey

2 visits and 2 successes warrant a Wild review (albeit Wildly brief).

-Great Coffee (french roast, very strong without the 'burn'
-Awesome pancakes (both visits)! Have had both the cinnamon-apple and blueberry (plus bites of regular buttermilk). So, so moist and fluffy with just the right density. Along with actual, real butter and ACTUAL, REAL maple syrup = $$$
-Fresh Fruit Selection is always seasonally based and doesn't have that "storage taste."
-Attentive service, food comes out hot.
-Freshly baked pastry, muffins, etc...Hello flaky blueberry scones and lemon muffins.

-Only minus, It's cold for someone like me (shaved head, runner) so I have to bundle up. Such a minor inconvenience will never stop me from frequenting this place!!

Definitely a must try for those who have never been and a return visit for those such as myself.

Restaurant 1833-Monterey

James Beard Finalist Nomination Well Earned and Deserved!!!

I really wish I had to time to write along review but school work...sigh. However, this visit was worth the break from the thesis. In fact I was so impressed I had to shake the GM's hand and tell him how great the whole experience was. Service was spot on, attentive, and not at all over-bearing. The ambiance of the adobe was the perfect contrast for the dedicated service and amazing food.

Quick Run-Down of Dishes:
-Amuse: Chilled Carrot-Ginger Soup shot, really gingery and good punch before the hot food was served.

-App/Bite: Bacon-Cheddar Biscuits with Maple Chipotle Butter...do I even need to describe beyond this title...and they were served hot in a min-cast iron skillet!

-Main #1: Grilled pork chop/Anson Mills Grits/Collards with pork belly. Chop was a perfect medium (I ordered, however the chef thinks it should be cooked) and served bone in to keep flavor/moisture. First time with pork belly, believe the hype!

-Main #2: Braised Lamb Shanks with Bean Cassoulet, super tender shank and great flavor. They cooked it right since most of the fat was rendered out (a common problem at other places).

Total was just over $70 (+ a glass of Merlot). In summary, a great experience and I plan to frequent 1833 in future Monterey visits.

Lunch, Dinner and Breakfast in Carmel/Monterey area

No worries, I ate there last Sat with a friend and we were both in nice jeans and blended in well. Heck, even the wait staff wear jeans so no worry. :)

Lunch, Dinner and Breakfast in Carmel/Monterey area

Strongly consider Wild Plum Cafe for Breakfast/Lunch in Monterey. I've now had two great meals there (one today in fact) and the food is great. It is all organic and seems more reasonable health/Portion size wise.

Also, 1833 is great too, the Pork and lamb entrees I tried were cooked to Perfection and service was stellar!

Ben and Jerry's Taste the Lin-Sanity

Well what about the lychee? According to the Huffington post the ice cream has a lychee swirl which is a fruit most commonly associated with Asian cuisine. They didn't remove this component; is it because most people don't even know what a lychee is but know a fortune cookie?

Ben and Jerry's Taste the Lin-Sanity

I think people should lighten up a little, Jeremy Lin is Chinese-American so what is wrong with a Fortune Cookie? I think if he was any other Asian ethnicity and they used a fortune cookie then it would be an issue.

Top Chef Texas - Ep. #13 - 02/01/12 (Spoilers)

haha, sounds like an episode of Chopped.

San Diego Vacation - Where To Eat?

Make a reservation and take the drive to Kaito Sushi in Encinitas, such good sushi

Top Chef Texas - Ep. #13 - 02/01/12 (Spoilers)

No to Grayson going off as I can't figure out exactly what she did wrong in greater proportion to the other 2. It seems like bigger portion size isn't as egregious as under-seasoned food or undercooked chicken. Whatever, this episode confirms that top chef has vertically extended above the shark

Paula Deen eating a cheeseburger

No, I'm too libertarian; it's her body to so as she wishes. It's up to her advertisers to decide if they want to be affiliated with her after this. What if you are "healthy" but have a family history of cardiac disease and want a hamburger? Should you not be able to have it because of the "risk?"
