Grocery Outlet

Beemster Gouda is $2.99 lb at the Redding Grocery Outlet. It's up to $15.99 or so normally. Go. It's wonderful.

Redding Restaurants

How old are the children? First thoughts if they're "teenish," Vintage, Savory Spoon, Tapas. Other possibilities, Cafe Paradisio (haven't been there yet, so can't personally vouch), or Moonstone Bistro.

Grocery Outlet

The Redding Grocery Outlet currently has Ben and Jerry's Dulce Delish for 1.99 a pint. Yum. Also a special on Boursin Vermont White Cheddar and Sage spreadable cheese. $0.99, but it expires May 3. Anybody try freezing Boursin before?

Stops on I 5 between San Francisco and the Northern CA border

Dunsmuir Brewery Works is another option - again, outdoor seating and dog-friendly.

Also in Dunsmuir with some outdoor seating is Conerstone Bakery and Cafe.

Roberta's Taqueria in Williams - look for the yellow building. Decent carnitas, always has business, tables are outside - you can leave the dogs right in the car.

Burger Express in Mt. Shasta - takeout or dine in, has outside tables too. They use Prather Ranch beef in their burgers.

I second this rec. We used to live in the Watsonville area, and this hits the spot for us. The owners relocated from that area also (Soquel, I believe). Best Carnitas in town. They have a second branch on Pine and Tehama Streets in downtown Redding too. It's good also, but we like the Churn Creek location better.

Anybody been here? Plusses? Minuses? TIA

Trader Joe's Yea/Nay Thread - December 2012 [OLD]

NAY - Jailhouse Gin. Strange taste - maybe it was really made in a jail? Not even salvageable in a G and T, and no way you would want this in a martini. My husband is considering using it for parts cleaner.

Tai Chi Restaurant - Polk Street [SF]

Looking for experiences with Tai Chi Restaurant. We frequently stay at Inns near the area and this place always seems to have a decent crowd in it - plus they have free delivery. What's good? What to avoid? Thanks.

Anything interesting in Redding?

My first thoughts are Tapas (, Vintage Wine Bar (, or Maritime Seafood ( All near/in the downtown area. We like Maxwell's too (, but I don't think it fits the "quiet dinner" bill. Any particular cuisine?

Tacoma spot with decent food, TV viewable from dining area

Engine House Number 9 - brew pub with decent food and plenty of screens. We watched some of the Olympics there too.

Anything edible in Susanville? (Lassen county)

There's a new brew pub in Susanville - Lassen Ale Works at the Pioneer Saloon. In a historic building, six beers on tap per the local paper. Currently 21 and over only. Love to hear a review from anyone that goes there.

Montreal foodie looking for reco's in Trinidad/Monterey/Morro Bay/Santa Barbara

Not in Trinidad proper, but slightly south are two of our favorite brew pubs. Six Rivers Brewing in McKinleyville and Lost Coast Brewing in Eureka both have wonderful beer and decent-to-good food. As a plus, they both do growlers too, so you can get some beer to go if you find one you really like.

Food recs for Paso Robles and Ojai

We've had three meals so far at Thomas Hill Organics in Paso Robles and they've all been wonderful. Might fit the bill for your Saturday night. We live 7+ hours from there and are trying to think of reasons to go back - "it's just a little out of the way, right?"

5 days in Portland for burntout restaurant folk

Kenny and Zuke's for amazing pastrami. If there's a line, it's worth the wait. If you're not concerned about a heart attack on a plate, get their pastrami cheese fries - I think that's where a lot of the pastrami ends are used up.

Breakfast in San Ramon, Pleasanton, Castro Valley or Hayward?

Ian F, thanks for the rec. We made it to Katy's Korner and were quite satisfied. Was it the best breakfast we've ever had? Probably not - but it filled the bill quite nicely. Blintzes with berries, yum! Katy's Benedict (with ham instead of canadian bacon) was OK, but I'd probably try a different benedict next time. Bacon, mushroom and cheddar omelet didn't disappoint. Grapefruit juice was fresh squeezed and tasted great.

Service was very attentive, but not annoyingly so. They obviously know their stuff. We were in and out in a flash, with the food coming very quickly after we ordered, but we never felt rushed.

Emil Villas looks really interesting! Maybe next time we're down in the area. Spotted it as we drove by on our way to the game - already stuffed from breakfast at Katy's. Thanks for the rec.

Breakfast in San Ramon, Pleasanton, Castro Valley or Hayward?

Will be in the area Sunday to attend the Women's Professional Soccer finals at CSU East Bay. Any can't-miss breakfast places we should know about? We're spending Saturday night in San Ramon near Whole Foods, so figure we can use that as one option. TIA.

Coast from San Fran to the Oregon Border - road trip food along the way?

We picked up some smoked tuna, smoked salmon, bacon ends and sausages from Roundman's Smokehouse on the main street in Fort Bragg. Yummy!

Trader Joe's Puff Pastry... a Seasonal Item

I found it today at their Redding, CA store after looking for months and months and figuring it was probably gone for good. Must indeed be a "seasonal (holiday?)" item. Don't know why, because it's frozen, it keeps, and it can certainly be used year-round. Better believe that I stocked up!

North Star Brewing is closed and gone. No replacement in the Redding area yet. Why, oh why, can't somebody open and operate a decent Brewpub in this town?!

Lunch in Redding

I just gave a response to a very similar question a week ago. I don't think there's any place in town that's knock-your-socks-off stellar, but there's lots of very good chow for lunch.

It helps if you have an idea of what type of cuisine you're seeking. One place I forgot in my other response was Pho Saigon - only been there twice, but loved it both times.

Going to Redding on I-5 from San Francisco?

OK - I don't have anything for you on the way up - when we head to the bay area, we usually just hit In-n-Out in Vacaville or Fairfield because a) we're not ready to eat before then, and b) there's no place that's really called to us yet. I'd love to hear about gems that others have found.

As far as Redding proper goes (and these are all single restaurants or part of very limited local"ish" chains):

For soup/sandwich/salad fare, you might try Old Millhouse Restaurant, Carnegie's, or Cheesecakes Unlimited (not part of the Cheesecake Factory chain). Service at Cheesecakes can be spotty - last time I was there it was fine, but I avoided it for quite a while because it was so poor. Also near downtown are Grilla Bites and Maxwell's Eatery (on Market Street). I haven't eaten at either yet - Maxwell's just opened last week; one of the co-owners is also involved with Millhouse, so we have high hopes. Moonstone Bistro also serves lunch and has some interesting options - but I find most of their food to be priced slightly higher than one would find it in the Bay Area.

We have many good Thai options in town: Thai Cafe, Nipa's, Racha Noodle, Five Thais, and a new entry, Janya's.

Japanese: Sakura Sushi, Kampai (my favorite - very small, though), or Yama Sushi (they have the floating sushi bar, which is fun for kids). We stay away from Fuji and Tokyo Garden.

Priya (Indian) has a lunch buffet that suits many. We were there for dinner the other night and they seem to have hit their stride with the food. I wrote before about a bland Masala Dosa, but the one I had the other night was quite good.

My go-to Mexican option is Taqueria Los Gordos - I prefer the Churn Creek location. Best Carnitas in town, hands-down (They also have a location in Soquel across from Cabrillo College).

Hope that's enough to get you started - there are other good options that I'm sure I've left out. Do let us know where you eat and how it was.

Are you looking for lunch on the way or in the Redding area itself? It's really two different things. Redding actually has a number of good lunch spots and many varied cuisines.

Idaho Falls - Help a Hound

We're headed to Idaho Falls later this week and are planning on checking out Brownstone Brewing Co. Anyone have input for us? We'll report back with our experience.

Sports Bar between Weed and Redding

Hi - can't offer you the perfect marriage of fabulous food and a sports bar (or at least great screens) too, but I am curious if others have found such a match.

Redding does have a sports bar where you should be able to catch the game - Bleachers on Hilltop Avenue. The food is pretty typical - lots of fried, the token salad, etc. But they do have lots of screens. The service left some to be desired too - friendly, but not nearly enough staff (gee, you mean the US soccer team is playing the World Cup? And people might come into our sports bar to watch it? On a Saturday, no less? Does that mean we should have more than two people on duty?). Sorry, got off on a little rant there . . .

Good luck on your quest!
