Queens Restaurant Week Recommendations

Why is Ridgewood Eats on the list? It is a local diner. Sure, I enjoy it. Would NEVER spend $35 PP though!

Esparks in Woodside

Anyone in the nabe have info on this? I would hate to see them go under, and so quickly!

mcdonalds ice coffee

I have to admit that I like their iced coffee as well. I have gotton into the bad habit of grabbing one on my way to work every morning. That, and that cinnoman bun like thing. God, those things are good!

Esparks in Woodside

I'm curious to see how this goes over in Ridgewood and Glendale. Though the Ridgewood location (Myrtle and Onderdonk, across the street from Commerce) is a busy area with NO coffee type place, the Glendale location (64 st, by Stop and Shop) is mainly residential. They do have the large Kingdom Hall closeby though. The 2 locations are literally walking distance apart.

Seems as though Esparks might be opening too many locations too quickly. We all know what can happen then.

Whither hot cross buns?

Rudy's in Ridgewood. They are about 6 blocks away from the Seneca Avenue stop on the M train. On the corner of Seneca and Myrtle. You could also walk up Myrtle from the Wyckoff station of the L train.

These are the original, old school HCB. The ones which you can only find around Easter. They also have German Lent doughnuts. Not sure on the German spelling of the name. DH swares by them!

What's your favorite water?

Lucky enough to have NYC tap water. When I'm on the go, I'll grab a bottle of Poland Spring. Not sure why it really hasn't been mentioned. I enjoy it!

What is something new to try with cranberry sauce? [Moved from South board]

Mixed in with my oatmeal in the morning. The kids love it as well. Great way to get rid of leftover sauce from the holidays.

Joe's in Ridgewood. Which one?

They are both sit down actually. The original Joe's is more red sauced. Good classics. Not great, but good. The new location has daily specials. Again, good, not great.

Ridgewood is not a great pizza hub. Rosa on Fresh Pond Road has consistantly good slices. Fresh, and they have an awesome grandma slice.

If you're going to Joe's, make sure you hit the Forest Pork Store.

Seven layer cake

Rudy's on the corner of Seneca and Myrtle Avenue's in Ridgewood. Soft, moist layers. Yet not too moist.

Sparks or Peter Luger?

Just went to Luger's for lunch last week. Not as "touristy", if you are looking to avoid that. I have to honestly asy that Luger's has been getting better. They had a lull, about 2 years ago. Now they seem to be getting back on track.

Been to Lugar over 20 times, and never been to Sparks. Just didn't interest me. I enjoy Joseph Marc, and Keen's as well.

St James Restaurant on Metropolitan Ave/Forest Hills?

Just got home from booking a brunch for 20 at the Saint James. 20 adults @ $21 per person. Includes unlimited pastries, their meals, unlimited sodas/coffee/teas, and 2 beverages per person (mimosas, bloody mary's, etc). Since the children's party (Movie at the Cimenart) will be over by 12:30, it's still early enough for brunch.

The seven children going will receive a platter of chicken fingers, mozzerella sticks, fries, onion rings, etc. If the children would like brunch, it wil be 9.95 per child.

Mary, the contact at the St. James, has been very helpful. The price seems fair, and the brunch menu is extensive. Besides the basic steak and eggs, waffles, and omlettes, it also has burgers, salads, and quiche. Something for everyone.

I was going to go the buffet route, but didn't have enough people. The brunch option will hopefuly work out well. Will let you all know how it goes.

What is the One Veggie You Couldn't Live Without

Another vote for potatoes. They are so versitile. As long as we have onions and garlic to go with them, we're good to go!

St James Restaurant on Metropolitan Ave/Forest Hills?

That was the first place I called actually. They are already booked. Still leaning towards the Saint James. Any menu suggestions?

Recipes for a tonsillectomy patient

Just wentthrough this myself. Smoothies were the only thing I could really tolerate. Milk shakes were ok. The more dairy, the harder it was to swallow. Poor hubby tried to make me chicken broth. His broth is excellant. To me at the time, way too salty.

The Trader Joe frozen fruits (rasberries, strawberries, etc) were a life saver. FYI: It was 5 days before I had my first bite of solid food. And it was a burger from Shake Shack. Still painful, but soooo worth it!

graham 'L' train stop choices?

The Q54 bus, Jamaica bound, stops right in front of the place. Going back down Metro, you can catch the 54 in front of Wendy's across the street. The Q23, Q11, and Q53 also stop there. The 54 is our Metropolitan bus. Just make sure that you catch one going to Jamaica, and NOT the last stop of Fresh Pond Road.

FYI, the Q54 has been rerouted to go to Atlas Park. So if you were looking to hit the Amish Market, you can do so in the same trip.

Know a cool place near the Bushwick Starr Theater?

Lots of Spanish restaurants in the area. Though some have great food (La Hacienta on the corner of Wyckoff and Dekalb comes to mind) the atmosphere may not be what your looking for.

Lots of choices along the L line and the M train. Tons of Polish in Ridgewood. If you do a search, you'll find numerous posts in ref to spots along the stops of the L line.

If you're driving, you have tons of options. Zum Stamntisch and La Tavernetta in Glendale. Kreden's on the Glendale/Ridgewood border. Roti places in Richmond Hill.

Cadburys Creme Eggs

Walgreens is already carrying them. Just bought a bag of cadbury mini eggs. The creme eggs are too sweet in my opinion.

Old fashioned Red Sauce Italian Restaurant

Another vote for Joe's Restaurant on Forest Avenue, in Ridgewood. Great lasagna. Also just a few blocks away from the Burek spot under the M train.

Make sure to go to the original Joe's off of Madison Street (across from the school). The newer Joes's a few blocks up is more modern, not red sauce at all.

St James Restaurant on Metropolitan Ave/Forest Hills?

My daughter's tenth birthday party is being held at the local Cinemart movie house this year. Now I need to find a lunch spot for 20-25 on a Saturday. Though I have never dined at the St. James, I have heard ok things about it. Nothing really written on the boards about this restaurant.

Has anyone been there for a private party, or just for lunch? I need to find a restaurant close to the theatre, that can accomodate kids and grandmas, and have both "simple" food and interesting food as well.

Dee's is booked for the day I am looking for. My poor daughter even suggested Sizzler! She's 10 mind you,and enjoy's the salad bar. Now that I mention it, the salad bar wasn't half bad when we went there about 3 months ago. Would it be in poor taste to rent out a room there?

TIA!

what do you eat/or prepare straight from the can, jar, package, etc.. that is perfect just as it is as a meal or snack? ?

I haven't seen a single person reply with this. Must be just me. How about that powdered CREMORA milk product. I used to eat it by the spoonful a grandma's when I was a little girl. YUM!

Sliders

Sliders are always White Castle's in my book. Though my husband recently tried the slider appetizer from the Cheesecake Factory, and swears by them. They do have mustard on them, which he usually does not care for.

What's your potluck dish?

I am always asked to bring the same two things, and their are NEVER leftovers. Blueberry buckle, and blondies.

The recipes are from the Home and Garden cookbook of all places :)

Best Diners?

Another vote for the Georgia Diner. Was just there at 3am last night with a starving 8 year old (late night ER visit). DH was happy with steak and eggs, daughter was happy with chicken fingers and FF, and I was happy with roasted turkey with all the trimmings.

They treat you well, you get a TON of food for the $$, and they make it fresh whether it is 3pm or 3am. Peter and Georgia make sure that all is kept in check. This diner is the best in Queens by far. Worth the subway ride!
