Wedding menu dilemma!

If the ravioli is vegetarian, I'd go with that. I would not worry so much about other choices. Those were the two best dishes and the ravioli should be universally appealing.

Red bell peppers and other ingredients that ruin a dish

I'm a foodie who does not like fish. I've really tried too.

Online Spice Stores You Trust??

I'm done with Penzeys. I have an account there with my address in it. I always click to have my spices delivered to my address. I got my last order, but it was misaddressed. The person who got it went through it and eventually brought it here. I am not pleased they went through it and that was NOT Penzey's problem. I did not blame them for someone going through my order. I did e-mail them that the delivery address they printed was incorrect by two numbers, 408 instead of 488. The e-mail I got back pretty much said that was not possible. I would have kept ordering from them if I would have, "Sorry that happened. We'll look into that," instead of, "we printed the slip with the address you gave us." I checked my account and it was the correct address, but the slip was not. Something happened. I don't know what. It was a mistake, I am sure of that, but I was bothered that the reply was so defensive. I didn't want anything, but for the problem to be looked into. I am not of the mind that the customer is always right, but let's look at all sides together, please.

Online Spice Stores You Trust??

Heads up. I order from Penzy's about once a month. I buy my spices in small amounts and replenish frequently. Lately I've noticed that Penzy's is taking a long time to ship my orders. Not to get my orders to me, per se, but a long time between when I place the order and when I get the notice that it's sent to me. I ordered spices last Thursday at 8 am and got the notice that it was just shipped today, six days. I get that they do say it can take a while, but it seems to take longer and longer for them to actually ship the order. I ordered a gift for a friend a few weeks ago and it took three weeks to get there. I'm just surprised how long it's taking these days.

Most disgusting taste (of normal foodstuffs)

Fish. I try to like it, but I don't. I want to like it. I love food and I'm ashamed that I don't like fish. It's silly.

As a tourist, do you plan your trips around food?

I don't plan my vacations around food per se, but I would not visit a place that has no culinary appeal to me. When I decide on a vacation destination food is in the equation, for sure. Along with other things, like things to do I enjoy. If I am going to a major city I spend a lot of time researching that city and the restaurants and I don't go home without hitting my favorite pizza place.

Stew

It's easy to put ont together on a day off and let it simmer all day. Freeze the leftovers and you're set for many meals to come.

Stew

I'm scared of those. My mother blew ours up, when I was a kid, and I've been afraid to get one since. Which is silly, cause they are much safer now.

Stew

Stew could never be made to order. It would have to be kept warm and served over the course of an evening, probably as a special.

How have/did your eating preferences change when pregnant?

Someone mentioned spices. I used to love hot food. REALLY HOT. I could drink Inner Beauty hot sauce. Not anymore. Since Herne and JJ came along hot food is painful to me and I'm talking a Taco Bell salad of doom (1200 calories). I am trying to build my tolerance back, but it's taking forever. I am really upset by this. It happened during my first pregnancy, but with JJ it was really bad.

Smoked Salmon

There are two kinds of smoked salmon. Cold smoked is what you are used to. It sounds like you might have a hot smoked salmon. That's what they sell in Grocery Stores in vaccum packs around Christmas here. It's not in the fridge section. It's got more of the texture of cooked salmon. Does that sound right?

Smooshed avacado, tomato, cucumber and sprouts with some Munster cheese and sunflower seeds on a Sunflower Oatmeal bread I bake. It's from the Bread Lovers Bread Machine Cookbook.

Regarding Girl Scout Cookies

I suspect our palates have changed since we were little. I used to really love things I don't like now. I thought things had changed, but the more I think about it, I'm the one who has changed :)

Regarding Girl Scout Cookies

Everything in moderation for me. I have never found a sugar free cookie I like, so I try to have fewer GS cookies and enjoy my bites. Which was hard before the kids came along, cause they've neer met a Girl Scout cookie they won't scarf down.

I love my Thin Mints. I almost mugged the Girl Scouts at my local grocery store yesterday. I was thrilled to see them. All boys here.

Stew

In the day and age of, "How fast can I get it done" a stew is sort of an anolmaly. You're talking about a dish that needs to be cooked low and slow to bring out the great flavor of the meat and vegetables. It requires work and a lot of restaurants are not braising like they used to. Many places are using half prepared foods with grills marks already on them, just heat and serve. It's not universal, but quite common.

Many of the high end places could do a heck of a stew, but a lot of people would turn up their noses at something so, "common." Which is a shame. If I want good stew, I make it. I almost have to. There is some wonderful stuff coming out of the slow food movement, but it's really fighting agaisnt the need to get it done and get it done NOW that has overtaken people. Which, in my opinion, is a shame.

I could eat nothing bitter, drink nothing with caffiene (the taste bothered me) and had a disgusting need to eat Kentucky Fried Chicken. Yuck, normally. I wanted a lot of vegetables and fruit, but nothing with a bitter note. No brocolli, or cabbage. Lots of non bitter greens.

What Modified or Value Added Food Labels Do you Avoid?

When I'm training hard for a race I tend to have some Propel on my bike, or in my hand. It's a nice change from water. I do it cause I like the Black Cherry, but not because of any added vitamins.

Store bought Naan

In theory never having anything like Cheese-It's in the house was always my plan. Until we wound up with three of our four kids with issues. We adopted two and one of them has FAS. We were prepared for that and we had no junk food. Then, I got pregnant. Quite a feat, since my doctors said it would not happen. He came at 29 weeks and was very sick for a long time. That's when the junk began creeping in. Another preemie and a little more junk. I mostly do whole foods cooked from scratch, but some weeks...One of the preemies has autism and one of the other kids has Tourette's and has some issues with that. If it's not one thing....I do my best, but the occasional box of Cheese-its does show up.

Me too. I can't eat spicy anymore. I lost the ability when I got pregnant with number three and it never came back. It's painful for me. It has to be hormonal. Anyway, I used to love South Indian, but I can't manage it without pain now. I'm still in mourning for my taste buds.

New stove here and I'd set the house on fire. I know my limitations and Naan is among them :)

I can make a mean Challah though. Your Jewish grandma would weep with joy. I have no idea how I manage that, but I had a Jewish roomie years ago and she helped me.

Today, I try Pho, tomorow it's French. Which means my ten year old might starve to death. Poor thing thinks Cheese-Its are a diet staple.

Store bought Naan

I love to bake bread. I've given up on Naan. I buy mine from the local Indian Grocery store and I think it's pretty good. As compared to the wonderful Indian restaurants we have here. I think we're up to five locally now. I am off to Trader Joes in an hour, so I will be on the lookout for it, but I probably will stick to the stuff at the Indian store, because they have a huge variety and it's supporting the local place. Still, I'm looking forward to smelling the bread. Husband will be with me, so I can't pretend it's a pick-up line and run a social experiment. :)

Very multicultural families: What foods can you all agree on?

We're Native American (NDN), Hispanic, German, Swedish and something else around here. It escapes me at the moment. I do the whole fry bread and squash thing, which the rest like. I'm also a good bit Swedish and grew up in a house with a Swedish dad and Grandparents (adopted) who were very keen on the passing on of the food of the old country (first generation). I do Swedish food and love my creamed herring. Which is a good way to clear the kitchen, since everyone else hates it.

My husband (German descent and pretty close to the food of his ancestry gastronomically speaking) will eat anything, but is very fond of meat and potatoes.

Two of my boys (adopted) are Hispanic. One is not too keen on Mexican food, but the other one is starting to get this whole Latin Identity thing going and wants to eat Mexican food. The problem is, to a ten year old, Taco Bell is Mexican food. Shudder. I'm hoping his tastes broaden after a cruise to Mexico we are planning.

Taco Bell. Ugh.

I'm also someone who cooks from many regions and cuisines. So there are a lot of Asian influences and Southern European. I don't do much African. I've not fallen in love with the cuisine, yet.

Has anyone tried diet Dr Pepper chocolate cherry soda?

I tried it. I can do the whole vaguely prune flavored and cherry thing, butt the tang of the artifical chocolate flavor was just over the top for me. It adds a strange note. It's not bitter, but something I can't put my finger on it. I suspect this is something people will either LOVE, or hate.

No decaf coffee here. Ugh, shiver. Nasty. I was at a funeral and they were pouring coffee. I asked for regular, but they ran out, making an abysmal mix of half regular and half decaf. I asked her to just give me the half cup of regular. I was very polite, but she gave me a dirty look. Someone else wanted the mixed coffee behind me, so I gave it to him and waited for the next batch. I just hate the taste and no, it is not the same.
